The first time I got my hands on a mobile devide, I discovered vertical video. Tried it once, thought it looked super ugly and never recorded vertically ever again. Until this day I still don't understand why anyone would want to film vertically, it's so bad.

I blame the phone companies for allowing vertical video. There should be a warning on the screen saying "When shooting video, turn your phone horizontally".

some versions of android would have an icon of a rotating phone when you were in camcorder mode vertically. don't know why that was removed...

Fun fact: that *used* to be the default setting. Before the iPhone, all smartphones and feature phones would record horizontally when in the portrait position. Due to how the iPhone works, they decided to match the UI to the actual device's position, which means that videos look awesome when recording them, but had the side effect of having most people default to vertical videos.

The worst part about vertical videos is even if technology adapts to it, a vertically shot video misses 2/3 of what's going on. You lose the ability to sneak in funny background events or easter eggs to reward the more astute observer or even have a scene that only works with a full picture. Internet videos seem to be headed in the direction where we either miss everything except what's in the dead center or the attempt to capture everything results in a tiny area in the center where the action's going on that you need a magnifying glass to see, a bunch of non-action space on the top and bottom and blank sides on the sides.

You are absolutely right! it all comes down to what you said in the beginning: laziness, lack of care and ignorance. "Vertical memories" are useless and I don't think we should adjust to what ignorant masses want. otherwise the next time someone decides to go watch a movie in the cinema, they should watch it vertically and enjoy it!

Horizontal video works best. Period. You can capture the entire scene without going side to side. Why people record vertically is mind blowing. Not going to give in to Snapchat for videoing and forfeit better quality by turning the phone. Vertical=annoying black sides that could have been filled with footage!) P.S. start horizonally....don't turn the phone afterwards....that's a mess!

Same here, playback of vertical video doesn't bother me on my phone that much for KZbin videos and such. But watching video shot in portrait on a TV is a different story.... especially so on my ultrawide monitor 😕

I'm so glad that this video was made. Nobody has yet said how it's being adopted by many companies to adapt to the change. However, i personally dislike vertical, as i find vertical videos only useful for temporary media, such as snapchat, where no single person uses the app horizontal, and for good reason. It's actively discouraged in the community, and turning the device when using it is a pain. However, things like facebook (don't get me started) and KZbin, i feel vertical needs to be standard, as most of the posts are for longer than a few seconds or minutes, and instead for months and even years ahead. I like your comparison to vertical video being thrown into a sort of void, it's just bad practice, but even now, it's only been growing since, and it has so chance in slowing down.

I despise vertical video, you see all these people shooting scenes of important events or crimes that could be used in evidence and by being vertical they miss 2/3 of the important stuff and instead shoot nothing happening in the sky and on the ground. I entirely blame the selfie craze sorry! I recently shot and posted a tripod dog video and shot it all in horizontal. Because the dog was all over the place my phone gravity sensor must have detected i started it maybe 10 degrees off perfect horizontal and the stupid phone made the whole video of vertical. Ugh! Fortunately my editing software could rotate the whole shot into horizontal without losing any video data. So it still turned out 3840x2160, standard 4k. I believe the first time you start your video recording app there should be a pop-up with the question "do you want pro or amateur video footage?" Then set horizontal /vertical PERMANENTLY for you.

Google needs to check the orientation of the phone when you start recording, and put an icon in the middle of the screen that's like a camera lens with a semi-circle trail around it with an arrow at the end, indicating you need to rotate it before you can click record.

Normal people wouldn't care. People like my parents just don't understand, and they still do it. But even to capture a quick shot, you pull your phone out and maybe forget to turn it. We are so used to holding our devices vertical, so we use it like that to shoot videos. That's why most viral videos on KZbin are shot in vertical. They just focus on what's happening, and don't care how the video is shot.

Today the phones are coming with 3 cameras as they have not yet placed one at 90º, when recording a video you would have two images to choose from, either vertically or horizontally. No need to flip the phone. Even a software solution would solve that.

Vertical video was used for Jumbotrons at concert venues years ago. The compromise is that the sides are cropped off but it is still pretty cool to see the performer take up the height of the screen - for example Michael Jackson on the HIStory Tour.

It COULD stop. If phone manufacturers would prevent recording in portrait, it'd go away QUICK. Just put some software on it so that when you hit record in vertical, it doesn't record, it just pops up a message that says "please rotate phone to landscape to begin recording". Bam. Done. Vertical format is just fine for watching crappy useless videos on your phone which is about 90% of all videos on the Internet. I can’t stand vert vids and will not watch them. I love to not watch them. Sometimes I watch a vert vid when I notice someone panning left and right like a fool when if they had shot it horizontally everything would be visible the whole time without moving the frame. But as much as I cannot stand vert vids, I don’t care because it just makes all of my horizontal videos look that much more awesome. People see my videos and say Man is this IMAX or something, and I say Yeah, it is, it’s horizontal.

Yay! Great to see a video in late 2017 talking about this horrible issue that's spreading like wildfire. VV are the worst!!! That is why I do not use snapchat, or the other "hey-of-course-use-all-services-to-record-virtual-crap-vertically" like stories on instagram. Also, I'm thinking of switching to the dark side and get an iPhone 8 plus (or X if I become a millionaire like now). If I do that I feel like I'll be one of 10 people globally who always records videos in the proper landscape mode. What a weird feeling that would be... it is so sad that we're losing this 💩 war... 😡

When I see people record their TV vertically, so it crops the TV but shows their entertainment unit and the wall, I cringe. People vertically filming scenic LANDSCAPES.. the beach at sunset or panning around looking at a snowcapped mountain range - I kinda lose a bit of respect for them. Either they're not too bright or they're too lazy, neither is great. I was commissioned to make a commercial for a pop up bar night, it was a horror theme so I planned a short scary movie trailer and asked them to film some shots in the bar. In the email I received VERTICAL VIDEO. THE HORROR.. THE HORROR..!

Really, vertical video it is a really horrible thing. Really. I do think the phone manufacturers could solve the problem by just auto-rotating so that the video is always recorded in horizontal (that is, correct) aspect. Sure, sometimes vertical framing captures the action, but mostly what I see is a whole lot of wasted head room and foot room (and I'm not sure that's even a thing). I implore you, turn your freakin' phone sideways. Please.
