well they were not meant to be art lol, if you dont need to write english words they are as useful as horizontal... i think

I really like your idea of the world adopting the vertical system instead, it looks so strange and unfitting, but also cool. And thanks for the video! I was curious on how often the vertical system is used

Vertical definitely looks cooler than horizontal, but it's also definitely harder to read (for non natives).

well the coolness is also relative. i imagine it to be boring for people who's used to it lol

I’m learning to write kanji and when I write vertically I think I’m able to write neater but I don’t know why. Maybe because the paper I use has boxes instead of lines?
@XiaosChannel
@XiaosChannel 4 жыл бұрын
well, i hardly ever write vertically, so i wouldn't know. i would say this though: in practice, fast and legible is important. people respect you if you write nice letters, but it's not as much about how neat you write as about how fast you write

Thanks for the interesting insight. I never realized the Chinese word order! I use MS Word, which handles both horizontal and vertical Japanese writing nicely. (Nowadays) I can write by hand vertically faster than horizontally. I think it’s because my pen ends up in the right place. However, I am right-handed and have to let the ink dry completely in vertical writing to avoid smearing it. My left-handed son has trouble with horizontal writing, but not vertical. XD For the direction of horizontal writing in Japanese, if you rotate vertical writing 90 degrees CCW, it will have the same order as horizontal writing. Sometimes, English words are embedded in vertical writing by rotating the English letters 90 degrees CW. The English words can be easily read by rotating the page CCW. みんなさん、またね!

This might sound stupid but on my journey learning japanese I've been making myself learning to write and reading it vertically natively. I figured that since I already know spanish and english which are left to right I might as well kill two birds with one stone and once I get proficient at japanese I'd just go "lazy" while writing it and do it left to right. That way both styles would feel natural from the get go.
@XiaosChannel
@XiaosChannel 3 жыл бұрын
You mean vertically left to right? Either ways today's japanese people rarely write vertically, probably due to westernization

Honestly, as someone who has 0 connection to the sino-sphere, it’s basically not even a challenge for me to read vertical text, so I really want to say one thing: _“skill issue, bro.”_ Jokes aside, novels are pretty easy for me, but manga can be hard, ’cause I never know how they actually want me to read the damn thing. A lot of the times, I can’t figure out for the life of me how the damn column transitions work. But in general, Manga seems more like this nowadays: ⬇↖⬇◀⬇↖⬇ ⬇↖⬇◀⬇↖⬇
