One thing I notice is that your videos with around 200K views (which is a crazy number of views) all feature " KENTUCKY BLUEGRASS" in the title... that must be something a lot of lawn people search for. I am in no way endorsing you to just go for views, nor am I saying you shouldn't, it's your channel, I'm just making an observation. Ill keep watching your stuff regardless.

Hi! Do you think the dethatcher and slicer would work well on a golf course green? I am trying to find an effective way to remove excess thatch. Would it be precise enough or do you think it would tear and leave a mess? I have a verticutter reel on a toro g1000 but it only can go down so far. I need to be a bit more aggressive. I would be doing this in the October after we close so there is time for recovery before we open at the end of May.

Thank you for awsome videos! A question about verticutting I live in sweden and we're having a hot hot summer and we are not allowed to water the lawn in my area. So my lawn is totally burned at the moment. My plan is to wait to august/september when we get rain again and verti cut the lawn and overseed it. Do you think its a right approach? My thought is that it will help the lawn to recover better in the spring.
@lawnrebel6 жыл бұрын
yeah that is a great idea. I would verticut heavily and out down perennial ryegrass. I am not sure what this is called over there in Europe. The potential problem with overseeding that I see with your situation is that whenever you seed you need to water it. The seed has to stay moist or wet to germinate. If you do not get rain then you need to water it.
@Wowatar6 жыл бұрын
Connor Ward yes I hope we'll get more rain in the autumm. If it doesnt come until very late I'll probably wait till spring. It would be nice though to get it done this year. Its depressing as it is now. Totally dry and yelllow all over. You are a great inspiration!

4:37 if you have the soil biology and chemistry that a lawn care nut like you does then the grass will grow well long or short, I think that's what's missing from your analysis, you suggest that it's BECAUSE of you mowing short that it's done well. I would like some other opinions about this.
@bmvj02136 жыл бұрын
John Ames, Connor is right about cutting low being a major reason for the thickness. He knows about soil health and chemistry too, but cutting low makes it thicker. It’s amazing.
@johnames64306 жыл бұрын
Can you explain to me how? It defies logic about lawns and plants, more grass blade means more surface area to catch sun and make food to grow? Can anyone explain this?
@bmvj02136 жыл бұрын
Mowing low allows more sun to reach lower in the canopy. the reel mower also pushes stolens to the dirt and promotes lateral growth. And the grass is kept in a more infant state which promotes new growth. And the mower plus the dethatcher cut stolens to promote new growth. MANY reasons it works. I start my season by scalping to the dirt and mowing low. The grass takes off fast and fills in quick. Don't do it with a tall grass like fescue.
@lawnrebel6 жыл бұрын
I can not explain why or how this occurs. All that I do know is that when it is cut short over and over year after year it get thick. If you do it once or a few times a year? Yeah that is going to look bad and not be healthy. If you saw my lawn in person you would see how thick it actually is. Yes I feed the lawn. Yes I water it well. Yes, i take good care of it. I can not tell you the why or the how.. I just know that it is true. It is so incredibly dense that is must be thinned out. Grass gets used to the low cut and adapts.
@johnames64306 жыл бұрын
I am redoing my lawn with kentucky bluegrass starting with seed. I will test this out and share the results with you. I won't be putting in the time that you are, just basic feeding, weed control, etc. We'll see if the difference is in the mowing or all the extra lawn nut things you do. I will pull take out a section and see if my roots get as deep as yours.

When you overseed with a verticutter, do you typically cut that deep? And then what do you do with all the thatch it brings up? I'd be afraid to go over the lawn with a mower or vac and end up pulling all the seeds up too.
@lawnrebel6 жыл бұрын
yeah.. I do not like to use that machine for the actual seeding. I prefer to use a broadcast spreader or drop spreader to lay down the actual seed. Verticut and rough up canopy. Then vacuum up the debris with lawn mower. Then put down seed with spreader. Then fertilize. Then water.
@beneb93186 жыл бұрын

IF you had enough earthworms, AND if you cut the lawn 3x per week with a side-discharge mower, AND if you used the right kind and right amount of nitrogen with plenty of iron, magnesium, calcium and other nutrients then you would get rid of your clippings the natural way and you wouldn't have to dethatch so often because it wouldn't build up and it would be digested faster by mother nature's means. Most people use too much or the wrong kind of nitrogen. You need just enough to get the right color and no more. The deep green is facilitated by chlorophyll which depends a lot of iron and magnesium. Calcium and phosphorus give juicy tender healthy roots. Don't know why, it just works. And for natural breakdown of plant materials (say in a compost heap) the best thing I ever saw was tomato fertilizer. A lot of calcium nitrate in that. Same as what they use to grow hydtoponic tomatoes. Way better than Rot-It pellets in the box.
