The Jazz Masters Carnegie Hall Salutes
Verve Records threw a party at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday night April 6, 1994, a celebration of its golden anniversary. The magnitude of the event and the number of jazz luminaries who turned out to participate was only fitting for one of the most importants labels in the music´s history.

A tribute to Bossa Nova and to Stan Getz

The most successful Verve recording of the early-and-mid-sixties were the Stan Getz bossa nova sides. It was these recordings that introduced the synthesis of Brazilian samba and American Jazz to the world - and they are still beloved today. The composer most closely associated with this music, whose piano also played a significant role in the original recordings, was Antonio Carlos Jobim. The hit Jobim song that launched bossa nova´s popularity in the U.S. was “Desafinado” as performed by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd. In this version Joe Henderson pays tribute to Stan Getz, one of his important influences. Although the style will always be associated with Stan Getz, the tautly-constructed melodic solo delivered here is classic Henderson. Also notable is Jobim´s singing of the rarely-performed witty verse of the song written by lyricist Gene Lees. (Liner notes: Richard Seidel).
