Very CLEAN Jeep Wrangler JL CB Install & IMPORTANT CB Antenna Tuning

This is Dave N9UH, I am a Ham guy. Your set up looks great and your SWR standing wave ratio is good. The concern, power is increasingly reflected back to the radio as the swr goes up. This happens on transmit. This power can take out your finals, (mossfet transformers in radio sending out the signal.) Having less than a 2:1 is what you are looking for. Nice job with the install, I might have to add a permanent CB to the JL.

I have been a CBer since 1975, just a few suggestion: You should mount the bracket to the top tailgate mount for best results, the less metal close to the antenna the better & the higher the antenna the longer your range. Then your SWR would be lower, the lower your SWR the better for your radio. Check your SWR in a open field 50 yards away from all trees, buildings, people & power lines, with the doors shut, my SWR is 1.1 on Ch. 20 & 1.5 or less on all channels. @@BEASTProjects I just redone my Antenna, I added a FireStick SS-3H Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Spring. After retuning, my SWR is now 1.0 on CH 19 & 20 (that is the best you can get it) & 1.3 on CH 1 & 40. FYI: With this setup, your longest range is @ the 11:00 O'clock position. I now get 35+ miles on the open highway, in my Sarge Green, 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport.

Try to tweak Channels 1 & 40 to a reading of 1.75 on your SWR Meter. Then test Channel 20, if it's below 2.0 you are golden.

Mounting the antenna to the upper hinge might improve SWR and tx/rx performance. Less “shrouding” by tailgate metal.

Had the same mount for JK...too inconvenient to have to keep reaching over to passenger side. Ended up swapping it out for Gear Keeper retractable mic holder.

Had the WX75 in my JKU good performer especially when peaked. Down side was couldn't see the screen and the speaker too small. getting ready to install a Cobra 29LTD (old school) rig in my JLU.

You can run it threw the roll bar also and just undo the plastic on it and run it underneath it.

Great video! I recently bought a 2019 JLU Rubicon, and have this same kit from Cooltech, (though I bought the radio elsewhere). I was wondering where to put the main unit. BTW, their instructions do say to put the bracket on the upper hinge. :-) Thanks again. I had fun watching.

Alternatively can the remote be placed in the back of the Jeep somewhere so you don’t have to route a long antenna cable instead could you just route a 12V power cable?

The mic plugs into the "remote" part (the little metal box that goes under the dash). If the remote was in the back of the Jeep so would be the mic. It would make it very inconvenient to use while driving don't you think? The antenna cable has to be in lengths of 9 feet. Our options are 9 feet or 18 feet for Jeeps. This has to do with the CB signal wavelength. There is no benefit of shortening the antenna length.

Now that you have had it on for a bit, do you notice the antenna beating off the tailgate when you hit branches? I had the traditional JK mount and the 4' antenna and it would hit the hardtop all the time. I'd worry about it beating up the tailgate with it on the lower bracket but I like the idea of getting the antenna a bit lower.

It will hit the top of my roof occasionally, but it doesn’t bother me enough to move it or switch it out.
