Tailgate Antenna Mount Install and Wiring to Radio Mounted on a Jeep JL Wrangler CB BAR

Hard mounting a full size CB Radio, HAM, GMRS or race radio along with a tall exterior antenna, is the best way to get good reception and have the greatest range. Fortunately, installing a radio inside a Jeep JL Wrangler is a piece of cake or at least, if you use one of my CB BARs and it can be just as easy to install an antenna on the tailgate, especially if you use one of my stainless steel mounts. In this video, you'll get to see how it's done as well as how to get the cable inside your Jeep and routed cleanly to your radio.
NOTE : This will work on a JK Wrangler as well but you will need to remove the tailgate hinge cover.

The first mount I did on my 2021 4Xe was using existing hole in the heavy duty tire carrier (near hinge). Worked great until I opened my rear glass without opening the rear hatch fully and a snapped antenna right off. Not sure if your design easily clears the glass when opening or closes glass when gate not fully opened, but I had to do a custom metal mount that fits antenna directly in the center of spar. Now no issue with glass. Love your creativity!

Finally had the time to install the wiring for the CB radio. Your instructional videos really helped and went pretty well. The only part I was not able to do was install the grounding strap to the tailgate. I used your tailgate mount and hardware and I seem to have same amount of thread like you had in your video but cannot get the nut to bite. Since I didn't have a longer bolt I installed the ground to the tailgate hinge door check. While it may not be the best direct ground for the antenna I'm wondering if it will be good enough. If not I may be getting a longer bolt and try that.

Is your antenna bracket strong enough to hold an eight foot stainless whip? Can your CB radio mount hold more than 1 radio? I saw a splitter switch to feed 2 radios with one antenna . Also, can you put rear sway bar disconnects on the rear of your Rubi?
@wayalife
@wayalife Жыл бұрын
I would imagine so but I have not personally tested it so I can't say for sure. Regarding the CB BAR, yes, there are lots of guys who are running multiple radios on it. As far as sway bar disconnects go, you do NOT want or need to disconnect the rear. The factory sway bar is soft enough that it will not limit flex. The stability that it provides is something you should want.

So…dumb question alert. When modifying the tailgate plug to accept the cable, is there an advantage to drilling a hole and then cutting or can you just drill a hole and run the cable through? Just curious! As always, great content and thank you for walking through all the steps with such great info!
@wayalife
@wayalife Жыл бұрын
The end of the cable is bigger than the cable. You could drill a bigger hole to fit the end through it but then, the hole will most likely be too big and will let in dirt and debris in the tailgate.

I had problems getting a ground bound between the Mopar HD tailgate mounting screws and your NMO adapter plate. In fact, on my 2023 Extreme Recon Wrangler, there is no continuity between the upper hinge, the original hardware and the chassis. Curious why you didn’t drill the 1/4” hole in the rubber plug and run it directly through without making a slit on it? Would make for a better seal, although for the most part will still work pretty decent
@wayalife
@wayalife Жыл бұрын
The hole created is ultimately a LOT smaller than a 1/4" and trying to shove the mini end through it is near impossible. The hole is made so that it exists but still has a tight fit around the cable. The slit is completely sealed once reinstalled. But hey, feel free to do what you think is best on your Jeep 👍

@@realbob6669 As I show in the video, the nylon washer NEEDS to be installed with the inner step sitting IN the hole of the mount. This isolates the threaded part of the stud. If you do not do this, you will have issues.

Should i be concerned.. the thought of canceling the order has begun to cros my mind… Ty

Honestly, I have not had this problem on any of the 4 JK's (1 I still have and it's a 2007) that I've owned, the 3 JL's (2 I still own) that I've owned or even the JT that I own. This goes for all my friends as well and over the last 20 years. I know there have been some instances where it has occurred but there are far fewer instances than the internet will have you believe.

Have any of your JL/JT jeeps had any issues with paint bubbling due to corrosion around the hinges of the doors, hood and tailgates? Are you aware of this seemingly widespread problem? I’m a huge fan of your videos, have always been a Toyota fan but am interested in jumping into the Jeep world, with a lot of that due to your videos. But as I do more research before pulling the trigger on buying a Wrangler, seems like a lot of people who own the current gen Jeeps seem pretty disappointed with the Jeep paint on their wranglers and gladiators in the areas I mentioned.
@wayalife
@wayalife Жыл бұрын
LOL - a few hyped up posts on the internet doesn't necessarily mean something is a "widespread" problem. NONE of my JL's or JT has this problem nor do any of the ones my friends have or members of my forum have it. Not saying it's never happened to anyone but with almost 1 million JL's out there, I think I would have seen or heard about a few more instances if it were truly a widespread problem.

Why not eliminate cutting the slit in the plug by just feeding the cable through the 1/4” hole you drilled? I feel like it would be more weather tight that way.
@wayalife
@wayalife Жыл бұрын
The hole created is ultimately a LOT smaller than a 1/4" and trying to shove the mini end through it is near impossible. The hole is made so that it exists but still has a very tight fit around the cable. Also, the plug is still difficult to put back in and that makes the slit completely sealed and weather tight once reinstalled. But hey, feel free to do what you think is best on your Jeep

CB Bar looks nice but I can't figure out why everyone think that the rear tailgate makes a great place to put an antenna? There is no flat ground plane to reflect the signal off of. If you want to transmit with any distance, you need to use a fender mount bracket so you get refection off the flat, horizontal hood's ground plane.
@wayalife
@wayalife Жыл бұрын
@Tony Waters It's where Mopar puts their mount on their reinforced tire carrier. And really, I've never found it to be a problem communicating with the friends I'm wheeling with. If they're really so far away that I need greater communication range, I'm not really wheeling with them. But hey, that's just me.

In the torx head, the paint will get marred a bit from the tool. The bolts will break free of the hinge clean and there is no paint in between the hinge and tailgate.

This is the worst place to mount any antenna, if you want proper reception and antenna use it needs a flat plane near it for good signal, like a hood or flat roof.
@wayalife
@wayalife Жыл бұрын
Umm, this is a Jeep Wrangler. It has no roof. Mounting on the hood is an option but it looks lame. While this may not bet the 'best' location, I have no need to talk to strangers half way around the globe. For my purposes, I have found this location to work exceptionally well and have had no issues communicating with everyone that I'm wheeling with.

For trail use, it's fine. You are rarely too far from those that you are communicating with. I get that in an emergency situation you want more range, but in my experience wheeling, the only people who are within the range of a few kilometers is the group you are wheeling with, and no one else.
@wayalife
@wayalife Жыл бұрын
@Keon exactly. Also, typically, I'm the guy people call on in an emergency as I typically have everything needed to help out. And, if I'm by myself and need help, I use my InReach satellite communications device. Other than that, there is no need to talk to anyone outside of my immediate group.
