Pilots are actually trained and instructed to perform firm landings when there is any kind of runway contamination so the tires can break through and make good contract with the runway and not (potentially) slide off.

@StopLaborWreckingAus7 жыл бұрын
The runway was wet. That's why. When the runway is wet, water can be pooling on the runway and when the tyres hit that water, the aircraft can aquaplane, resulting in a loss of control. The reason for the hard landing is to ensure that any water under the tyres is dissipated quickly so that there is little chance of the aircraft aquaplaning. People think that a smooth landing is a result of extreme skill on the pilots' part. In certain instances that may be true. But more often than not, it is due to the pilot floating the aircraft past the landing threshold and touching down some distance down the runway. Just because a landing is a hard one, doesn't mean is was a bad one or the pilot is incompetent. It can actually mean quite the opposite.

Pilots have to land HARD to break the water surface accumulating on the runway. Otherwise, it might hydroplane. This is the reason why it was a rough landing.

That is bullcrap. a 300 ton 747 will displace even a few feet of water on a normal touchdown. No reason to bent the gear and wings on a 20-30 year old 20 million airplane. What airline you fly for? We drive Airways?
@daviddowling98307 жыл бұрын
What a majestic aircraft.Great video.
@kinsley21087 жыл бұрын
spilot14 is correct you know. Aircraft tyres don't displace water very well because the tread is straight. The shock struts compress easily but expand slowly (We're talking around 2 metres of travel in a 747). So one has to really come down fast to punch through that water to get the wheels to bite the tarmac and spin up, otherwise it will hydroplane and either flatspot or blow the tyres, not something you want happening at 180MPH. Then in that time, the spoilers are fully extended, further forcing the aircraft to the ground for maximum braking effect. It's all standard practice, really.
Some of the older anti-skid systems had to be activated with a "slam" on the surface to tell the computers that the aircraft was indeed on the ground. Could be the case on this one.

You do have to be aware as well (not that I'm doubting that those were hard! Ouch) that the side landing gear on the 747 is placed very far from the middle of the plane (i.e it's very near to each wing) so the jolt from the gear touching the ground makes the wings bounce a lot, however if you look at the inner flaps, they take the brunt of the impact due to the gear being right below them, and the rest of the wing hardly moves. The wing flex on 747's is enormous and can actually absorb quite a lot of impact force, so while it looks horrendous, it's not as bad as it seems.

Seems to me the PH relased some back pressure on the yoke (=nose down) in a correction shortly before touchdown, then started the flare, but with inertia of the plane it was not enough to stop the rate of descend so hit quite hard. Lesson could be : be careful with nose down correction when near touchdown as rate of descend would take a while to be corrected back to normal.
@SH00T_TH3PUMP5 жыл бұрын
Thats one badass bird! Love those 747's!
@garygaunt1267 жыл бұрын
If you look closely there is a dip and a then a hump around about where the touch down aiming points are. The difficulty, and it is a depth perception problem, is in the timing and where to make your round out to gently arrest your descent. A little too late in the dip will plant you firmly into the "side" of the hump, hence the firm arrival. Just one of the multitude of factors around a soft arrival. No biggie. The runway and aircraft design allow for it.

I was once told many years ago that landings on wet (and thus slippery...with all that rubber residue from countless landings made in the past) runways were intended to be hard to get those main bogies planted well on the ground to promote an early establishment of weight-on-wheels (WOW) that is needed to create tire-ground friction to fortify braking action from the wheel brakes.
@N3vermake7 жыл бұрын
On both videos you can see that the flying pilot lowered the nose of the plane shortly before the flare. It's a natural thing to do when you find yourself a little bit high on the glideslope, but it's a problem if you do it on short final since you are going to pick up a larger rate of descent than you are used to in a standard flare. If you miss this fact and try to land as you always land, you will smash into the runway since you didn't properly arrest the (now higher) sinkrate. Common mistake!

Normal sink rate, strong cross winds. Pilots doing a good job getting the bird on terra firma. Wing deflection is nominal so the appearance of head landings is more prevalent than actual hard landings. Strut compression and bounce is a better indicator of a hard landing.
