A mix of great and not-so-great flights filmed at the Tokoroa Airfield (NZTO) last weekend. Damn, I'm really starting to notice the effect that Parkinson's is having on my ability to video this stuff and it sucks!. This is just a very rough cut from the mass of footage I took. I'll be doing some more detailed videos on the F86 Sabre, Lightning and other models that were featured later this week.
Not too many crashes this weekend. RC plane, planes, turbines

Surprising the number of jet jockies who want to land these high wing loaded models at speeds you'd land a 40 sized RC plane! Stall near the ground and the most useless thing you have is the airspace above you!

Thanks for capturing the strikemaster landing incident Bruce. It will help us diagnose what went wrong and where we can improve. Clearly not turning it on its back would be a good start :-) The good news is that the damage seems quite light - a lot of scrapes and grazes mostly but we will look at all structure and components in detail later. The aircraft will be repaired and put back in the air better than before.

Thanks Bruce. It strikes me that a number of those pilots don't understand the high stall speeds of their aircraft, or the fact that some of the more modern jets are deliberately designed to be unstable, for better manoeuvrability. The full-size aircraft are designed to be flown under computer control, because they are too much for an unassisted pilot o control.

Good stuff here. Must second S. Kite's observation below but, I would replace, "a bit of a handful" a double handful! ! I can't imagine that all of those flyers were novices but those aircraft were making them out to be. I'm also guessing that there was a helluva cross wind component as well.

A reason why i fly with console - transmitters. You can fly much more precise and it is much easier to set the sticks stable i a position especially with crosswinds. Elevator and Ailerons together and rudder and throttle together makes it much better to react to stabilize the landing configuration.

Maybe a monopod (you can make one). Right and the close to ground scale shots really what made this video awesome, i should have mentioned that. love it when a plane rolls by and i can't tell if it is real or not. i made a handheld gimbal (with hero 4) i put on a selfi stick to try and get low close to ground shots. When i'm filming with big camera i always use one of those cheap steadicams.

@Johnn_T
@Johnn_T 5 жыл бұрын
In their defence the runway at Tokoroa is more “north/south” and the prevailing wind is always from the west-hence you will notice them all get hairy at about 15ft up and some more so as they get lower. I don’t know what the wind was like there today as I didn’t go to see Bruce but 30mins up the road where I was flying she was fair gusty on and off all day.
@davidwebb4904
@davidwebb4904 5 жыл бұрын
John T Airports have always traditionally been constructed to align with the prevailing winds.....
@Johnn_T
@Johnn_T 5 жыл бұрын
David Webb the one at Tokoroa ISNT because the prevailing wind blows across the runway from the western side where the hangars are (I fly there often). Tokoroa airport used to be fully surrounded by trees and dense forest when it was constructed (Bruce will correct me here if I have anything wrong), so at the time the prevailing wind from the west likely wasn’t an issue (due to all the shelter from the trees). Over the Decades they have deforested the central north island quite extensively, hence we almost always have a Bas&@rd crosswind across the runway (as Bruce himself will tell you). Plenty of us have been caught out by it plenty of times, and I know if you watch Bruce’s videos of full size planes landing from the south end quite often the nose will swing toward the hangar side of the runway due to that wind. In summer it’s fantastic-just about nothing at all, but this time of year it can get quite savage.

Seems as though there was turbulence from some source. The rising heat from the runway could be a contributing factor for irregular thermals causing the air to become very unstable in ground effect. Take a longer final and come in a little hotter than usual and let the plane fly to the ground, not into the ground. Tried this same technique in the real ones and greased a landing each time.

So sorry you’re dealing with such a horrible disease and I don’t have anything but a comment. I started flying control line models at 8 years. Been flying both R/C and C/L for about 50 years. I’m also a private pilot. I have no turbine experience so maybe the nature of the beast might explain why they don’t execute a go around when the approach is so out of line? The approach is so bad they try to fly it to the ground instead of a nice stabilized approach that only requires minor input to hit the runway? Just venting I guess. It pains me to see such nice aircraft damaged from being low and slow to the point they snap stall a few feet above the runway. Great video. I enjoy the immensely.

I'm in my 50's and have been flying most of my life, planes, helis, quads, nitro, gas, now electric since it's so cheap, easy and reliable. I doubt I will ever in my life be able to afford the kind of money these gentlemen have invested in these planes. That being said, I am always amazed that the vast majority of turbine pilots, with tens of thousands of dollars wrapped up in these models, can do a high speed pass right down the center of the runway just feet (a meter) off the ground, but don't have the ability to set up a stabilized approach for landing! They are always trying to fly down to the ground and over-controlling every movement. Granted it looked a bit gusty, but still, that didn't seem to bother them on the low pass.

to be able to land your model successfully by being on runway edge, it is necessary to have a lot of experience and landings are not always successful, if we had a front view through a camera placed on the nose of the plane and connected to your smartphone, would be ideal ( virtual reality glasses )
