It's not greedy, it's instinct, neither good nor bad. Why not accuse predators with cruelty? Lions, tigers, owls, (raptors, who are admired as noble hunters), bears, wolves, no accusations of cruelty there? The cuckoo has no choice, it's behavior is not a conscious decision unlike predators that hunt, kill, terrorize prey. Cuckoo chick must obey it's instinct, as bizarre as it must seem. They are only CHICKS, (not babies or children, terms traditionally used to describe Humans. Look it up, just a few taps away).

It is very much NOT helpless at all in any way shape or form. They are born ready, hardwired, and immediately set out to kill from the moment they hatch. Where other species use the energy from their development in the egg to get themselves stable, the cuckoo boards resources, and ever bit that is invested in the egg is to be used immediately by the chick from the word go to facilitate its killing spree. It might not be consciously malicious but it is a machine built with only one purpose in mind.
