To set the record straight. On screen fighters like Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung would be much faster and deadly in a real fight. In their movies they are doing lots of fancy styles and overdo all their moves by loads for the shot. When Bruce Lee was around he was training world champions who had a difficult time getting close enough to hit him.

You are correct. But what did Bruce Lee do when he was on camera? He did exactly that. He also exaggerated his movements so that they would look clear on camera. You have to realize that in order to perform different styles on camera, these actors/directors/coreographers have to learn them first. And to be able to do it throughout their professional careers, they have to do rigorous workouts in order to be able to keep everything authentic looking. And that also includes sparring. Back in the days the old school actors you mentioned above, used to learn the entire set of movements and the application of the movements for every new movie project. Then they would spar with their colleagues for hours trying to figure out movements for fight choreography using those styles. So they have a lot of knowledge of different styles. With their skill set they might not become world champions in brutal full contact tournaments. But they are definitely better than most of us.

Yes, Kathy Long said that in real combat, you do not want your technique to be seen. In the movies, it is the opposite - you want your technique to be seen. Bruce Lee and Kareen Abdul-Jabbar had to slow down their fight sequences in Game of Death just so the camera could see what they were doing.

Now that I think about it, it might have been more than 8 guys who jumped him; by the time officers from the local constabulary showed up, Donnie put 8 of them on their backs harder than a bunch of $2 Thai hookers, and 2-4 more either had the basic sense to back off, or were still able to leave (and/or head to jail) under their own power. Like a lot of people, when I first heard that, my immediate thought was "Uhhhh...okay...ol' Donnie definitely knows some stuff, and God knows that whether you're a star or a stuntman, you fo'-sho' can't be a pussy and get anywhere making action movies in Hong Kong. But **8 DUDES** at once? Hmmm...I gotta give that an 'X to doubt.'" But it's straight-up true. Earlier in his career, he kept getting hit with "So, Donnie: we heard the most *AMAZING* story recently, and me and the fellas were wondering..." on talk shows and public appearances. It's been looked over and vetted plenty of times. Donnie Yen is an effing beast. Started training when he was a little kid-- his mom was a sifu in Wing Chun kung fu-- spent a couple years in the States-- living with relatives in Boston, I think-- during which he ran with a street gang. Went back East, started working as a stunt man and a fight choreographer, doing the "movie" thing. Dude's been living/breathing martial arts and combatives for about 40 years; still trains, still picks up new stuff to expand his range. I think he was the first guy to start seriously working BJJ into his fight scenes (and making it look good).

He looks around 20 years old here. So that would put him in his late 40s now.
