Went here with my parents in our 1972 ford F-100 single cab pickup truck standard transmission only had heat no AC. That truck had zero electronics it was all mechanical. My father bought it in 74 we took that camper everywhere kids road in the back of the camper. I remember this road riding in the cab over looking over the hood of the truck it would sway over feel like it was going to tip over the side. Those days did stuff like that relied on your brains not airbags and seat belts. Kids slept in tents parents in the camper. Pop kept it in 3rd gear it only had 3 speeds 1st gear was granny gear in that pickup. He drove it for 20 years work and back until he bought a car I got the truck in high school when I turned 16. I drove it until I was 27 years old had it repainted sold it to a guy who took it to Canada.

Let me tell you.😱. This drive will make your stomach turn. I am afraid of heights to a point, but can tolerate it. I am from Jamaica and have driven there and we have some high roads in the mountains. I wish I heeded your warning. I thought you were overreacting. 🤦🏾♀️We took the 180. I felt sick, my hands were clamy, I had a headache all in one. There are no rails, the road is steep and windy and narrow. You are on here for like 26 miles. My hands are sweating just talking about it.😂🤦🏾♀️. Then when you get into the park to go to certain areas, it starts again. Was trying to get to General Sherman tree, I could not do it. We turned back. I did not even venture to the opposite side. I just had it. People, not everyone can take this. There are areas to turn back on the way up put far and in between. Now, it is awe inspiring to say the least. So beautiful, but you cannot have one inch of fear in heights to get here. And you have to drive slow and careful! I see your drive is showing some form of a barrier on the side, where I drive had nothing. That made it even worst! Be warned!

This is the drive down .But on the other entrance going up to sequoia it was wild..I drove up here couple weeks back it was kinda scary thinking about the what ifs with the cliff on the side of u..But Main thing is to just take your time ....Dont let any car behind you rush u ..pull over to let them pass when passing lanes come up . That's about it ..Drive slower than usual and take your time

Driving to Emerald Bay from Highway 50 to 89 is a lot scarier... Narrow, switchbacks, no guardrails on both sides and 600m drop off 😭

I have been on the Emerald Bay drive...it is very scary in spots, but it doesn't compare to the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, the scariest road I have ever been on in my entire life. I was in a tour group with a top notch driver, and the drive was great as a result. This road we didn't travel on, and it is just as well. It appears to not be as terrifying as the Kings Canyon drive, however, but bad enough.

It isn't dangerous if you drive slowly, as the Army Corps of Engineers intended so you could appreciate the vistas. Also, switching to a lower gear really saves your brakes. A friend once claimed he made it from Giant Forest to Three Rivers using his brakes only seven times.

Definitely lower gear .

Yosemite I find even less “sketchy” than Sequoia because you have tree cover most of the way, but I think most people find Yosemite worse. I guess it depends on what you dislike. Most people don’t like mountain twisty roads. I live near the mountains so that doesn’t bother me. What tends to bother me a bit is shear drop offs, which I feel like Sequoia has more off than Yosemite, but I’ve only entered Yosemite from Oakhurst. Hope that helps!
