Thank you for making this video! I used to be a small farmer that sold at farmers markets. I had a huge variety of alternative livestock and produce. Our small farmers have alternative options, very diversified. We need to support them, ask for variety. Many small farmers just go with what people are used to seeing, grabbing and buying. There are tons of awesome alternatives. Thank you again! We really need change!

And on top of this, imagine how much food is thrown away because no one buys it or it is not bought in big quantities so it goes bad instead.
@AshishRaiprofile
@AshishRaiprofile 4 жыл бұрын
A lot of food that is thrown away is either treated or processed. For eg: raw rice/wheat/millets are practically seeds and don't spoil or germinate but, any product made from it perishable and has a very short self life..... Vegetables however depend on supply and demand... Onions and potatoes have a higher shelf life if stored correctly....(can go upto an year)..... Herbs and green veggies are seasonal

nope, goats and sheeps are very close relatives, can even interbreed still, goats were first, but we later seleted out of different tamed wild viarities the onces that produced better milk and/or meat for goats, while we selected some to produce lots of whool, selecting the easiest processable, to become the sheep. so, at first domestication, the sepperation either doesn't exist, or contains dozens of animals that are a dirent kind of somewhere in between goats and sheep!

Yes but most of the time when we cook we don't just eat one ingredient by itself in a dish. For example, grapefruits, they are bitter and some enjoy them as is but most people that eat them probably sprinkle something on it in the morning to make it more tolerable if there going to eat it or the juice gets blended with other foods to make something truely tasty. The bigger issue here is accessibility of these other foods. Theres a reason why the food we have today is well the food we have today. It's because it can be transported relatively easily and can be stored easily for longish periods of time. Not to meantion cost is a issue.

@macsnafu 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. That's why we need the wealthier people to support and develop diversity, so that producers can ramp up production of an alternative when a crisis strikes. FAULT LINE is correct to some degree that government subsidies affect prices, but while the price of subsidized foods have a low price tag in the store, we make up the difference in prices with the taxes we pay. So ultimately corn *isn't* all that cheap, we're just paying for it in a different way. Also, some government programs support higher prices, like for milk and milk products.

One memorable plant in particular was a banana tree cultivar which had small (about 6 inch long) bananas with orange colored flesh inside. It was by far the most delicious banana I'd ever eaten. A statement on domestication: nowadays, we don't necessarily _need_ to domesticate a species of plant or animal to sustainably farm it: if there were some craze for emu-egg breakfasts, we could just section off some ranches in Australia, or Africa, and fill it with the Emu's preferred food source in relative abundance, then have some blokes in armored cars go around stealing eggs, because emus are viscious. The point is; varying the available human diet is easier now than ever, humans are just lazy.
@dennisp8520
@dennisp8520 4 жыл бұрын
Humans are not lazy, there other things that go into food. For starters let's say you do get that egg in Australia, how are you going.to get it to a US super market so that a consumer can actually purchase said egg? You would need to develop a whole new stilule of egg container to store it in and have to convince the supermarket to make room in it's already competitive refrigerated sections. Ok top of that you would need to educate consumers how to use the ingredient so they actually want to buy said ingredient. I'm a fan of more diverse vegetables and fruits since that would be easier and cheaper than going on a egg chase while also allowing for more fun flavors and important nutrients. Fruits and veggies can be flash frozen for safe transport relatively easily and most don't need to be stored in a refrigerator section which keeps cost down
@davidgreen5994
@davidgreen5994 4 жыл бұрын
Is not laziness is comfort. Peoples got too comfortable with finding food on the shelf. In my birth village peoples have become totally dependent on shopping for food. 20 years ago peoples would produce even their own breed... then little by little they gave up on producing food little by little. First they stopped making good bread to buy cheap and shitty bread from the shop. Then they started to give up on their lands and sell it. Then little by little their animals. In the past 4-5 years, even the cow, that was once queen in their yard vanished - even the chickens changed, in the past we would breed them ourselves every season, now peoples simply buy farm chickens, the type that grow gigantic in a month or 2 and don't breed... it got so bad that they started to even buy vegetables, instead of bothering to plant them in their gardens. Is ridiculous how fell to this level... and what is worse, is that they chose comfort over tastier and superior in quality food.

@@benp9793 "All food should be grown and consumed locally". That is no longer possible in modern times, at least for the majority of the world, unless you are willing to starve off half or more of the planet. It is also not desirable. It's very likely that hunter-gathering was significantly much harder than farming & domesticating animals. Consider that Humans would be the only species gathering nuts & berries and finding enough calories from nuts and berries would have been extremely difficult & time consuming. Hunting was also risky as they can get attacked by the prey or other preditors.

Having studied diets and nutrition for over 35 years, (as well as Geology, anthropology history and countless other topics) and read literally hundreds of book and read untold papers by the worlds experts....there is one thing i know. When humans began to be able to preserve or keep foods, in some way or another, we began to lose variety. Up until few hundred years ago, meat was the only food that was dried, as salt and fruit are not the nicest mix. However when peaches or apricots were in season, each tree has a fruiting range of only 2 weeks. Unless you grow food you dont realise how narrow a particular foods ripe range is. The next point is storage. On the whole, the more naturallly storable a fruit or veg is, the more of it we should eat. Think potatoes, cabbage and onions. But this has to be weighed against the energy expenditure to get that food. Grain, without machinery, is highly energy intense to grow, mill and knead into a bread, and by then youve earned every calorie it has to offer up. But today we have unlimited amount of this rubbish without spending any calories other than driving the car and waiting at the checkout. However, fresh potatoes, cabbage and onions and carrots are abundant in enzymes and bacteria our bodies need. But flouor and rice are dead foods and really shouldnt be eaten - they only provide calories and not much else. So grains aside, fruit and veg should only be eaten seasonally and in proportion to its harvest window. just my 2 shillings worth

Have you seen the milk substitute product called Ripple? Currently it's labelled as being "vegetable based" but originally it was marked more specifically as being made from split peas. I can guess why they changed it -- how many breakfast conversations went like: "Mm, this tastes kinda different, honey. Is it milk?" "No, dear... It's *pea* !" >sputter

I'm growing 30 different fruits and vegetables in my backyard now. 5 of which are different potato and sweet potato varieties. It staves off cabin fever and I'm rolling in better tasting food. We only need to get about 5% of our produce from the store now. To try something new. Or to get something I'm having difficulty growing out of season. Edit: This isn't even gloating. It was a LOT OF WORK TO SET UP. THE PESTS are rage inducing. I have to go outside at night to rage war against slugs and snails! I spend at least 20 hours a week working on it! But by golly, I'm glad. I appreciate my food much more now.

Something to note about the potato famine: it was a direct result of imperialist occupation. When England successively invaded Ireland, they stole huge swathes of land from the Irish people, renting it back to them whilst giving them no rights over property or the land itself. Ireland was used as England's "bread basket" and feeding the Irish people and the animals they forcibly had to raise for the affluent English occupation was done cheaply via the lumper potato (remember, at this point they effectively had no land of their own, or rights to the crops grown upon it). When the blight hit, there was no food for the poverty stricken Irish and very little was done in terms of alternative aide. So really it was less a choice to have a limited diet than and imposed suffrage.

I grew up on a small dairy farm where we still grew our own vegetables and canned and froze most of everything. We even picked apples, pears, and peaches that neighbors grew from their own trees. Might I add that rhubarb is a very interesting crop that most people don’t know about? I do agree that we need to eat more diverse foods. Might be a stretch, but could it be ethical to designate city plots for local food production, such as garden crops?

Sadly I agree with what he says, but worst is I don't see myself changing my lifestyle. But that's OK. Buy only locally grown when you can and you might even try self or home grown. It's more eco and healthy. This is literally how our grandparents and everyone before them lived. We literally forgot how to live. Do you even imagine what it takes to buy an exotic fruit from around the world? The act of buying a banana produces more pollution than you driving your car a whole year.

I grew up farming wheat in Kansas over the summers (wheat harvest is the last week of June/first week of July in KS) and I breed cannabis plants now. Definitely a massive difference in price: wheat was around $3.50/bushel (sixty pounds, 27kg) back then, quality cannabis is ~$300/oz (now, in a legal state; it was worth wayyy more back then and is still pretty expensive in black market states). It's also much cheaper to grow wheat than it is to grow good pot, go figure lol

I learned something new today that tonnes are a metric thing while tons are an imperial thing. One other thing to consider is to study more beneficial bacteria. Bacillus subtilis under field trial shows efficacy on late blight of potato. Soil application and foliar spray helps in the enhancement of plant growth. Application of Bacillus subtilis increases the commercial potato tuber yield. Bacillus subtilis could be considered as potential biocontrol.
