Very special 1970 Otis Lexan traction elevator @ C&A retail store, Brugge, Belgium

Very epic and special elevator indeed - serving as a multi-purpose elevator for both freight and passengers. Basically one door side opens directly towards public area while the other door side opens into staff-only area. This retail store is three floors high but it has only two shopping levels as each shopping level is 1½ floor hgh with their high ceilings. The upper shopping level is located in the middle between the first and the second floor.
The floor designation is 0, 1, 2, 3 (for convenience reasons i guess) instead of 0, 1, 1½, 2 which would be more technically correct. This old historic building itself is actually four floors high but i don't know what is on the top floor
An alternative floor designation which i would have preferred could have been 0, 1S, 1, 2S, where "S" would stand for Service / Staff-only.

Yes and i love the sound of the air compressor which starts at 03:12. It reminds me to the old S-trains we had i Copenhagen from 1968 to 2007... back when we had real trains. Those also had pneumatic doors and one could clearly hear and feel the air compressor when it started. There must be an air-preassure-tank here because the doors can open and close many times before the compressor starts charging again

Special doors! Are these similair to Schlieren portaflex doors? It's nice to see that this lift is still maintained by OTIS. I guess that the Gen2 callbutton is simply a repair. I've seen some OTIS pre-lexan elevators in V&D department stores in the Netherlands (Leeuwarden, Utrecht and Nijmegen) Which are also pre-lexan. Some of their fixtures where replaced by the current Gen2 ones, wich is to be expected after 40-50 years of heavy usage, however some fixtures where still the original ones. The lifts in Utrecht are very nice. Liftboy nick (channel doesn't exist anymore) had filmed them.

The portaflex doors from Schlieren are made of aluminium and seem to be directly driven by an electric motor. These OTIS doors are a bit different as they are pneumatic and heavier, made of steel. The callbutton is most likely just a repair, yes. I'm not sure if the machinery and controllers are original or not

So I guess 0 means basement. In Canada our Elevators are floor listed as P for parking LM for Lower Maine for access to the basement M for Main Floor And the rest are numbers 2 to the very top floor 🔔 & ☎️ for emergencies Justin case the elevator stops where it’s not supposed to

Yes the doors are indeed pneumatic. We could also hear the compressor sometimes. It's a central-system with just one compressor and air-preassure-tank for the entire elevator installation. Small pipelines in the shaft then supply air to power the automatic doors

In America all elevators must have inner doors except for wheelchair lifts.

Electric eyes send a beam across the opening of the door, if the beam is broken the elevator stops, much the same way an American garage door opener works, where if you pass under the door and you trip the sensor, it opens the door back up.
