It's an interesting fact when you learn that the bolsheviks weren't the only socialist movement in Russia. For a long time before the October Revolution they were pretty much in the shadow of other groups like the Mensheviks and the Social Revolutionaries, both more moderate socialist groups

10:20 Quick reminder, casualties does not equal deaths. In the aftermath of the Kerensky Offensive, the Russian Army disintegrated, and the number of killed, wounded, and taken prisoner was about 400,000. I am not sure how many were actually killed, but the usual estimate is that 2 men are wounded/injured/captured/get sick for each man that is killed...so perhaps 130k-150k were actually killed.

Also these casualties were not from a single battle but rather a result of entire "June Offensive" (or "Kerensky's offensive"), i.e. the series of offensive operations along the entire East Front of the WW1 from Baltics to Romania.

Not to mention how many factions the civil war had, one should never forget that it wasn't just "Red Army" vs "White Army", those alone already had dozens of subfactions often fighting each other, but also the secessionist and independence movements in the entire former empire (Most prominent the Baltics, Poland and Ukraine).

It's almost a bit terrifying how "quickly" it all seemed to de-rail, I know that the sentiments against Tsarist Russia had been brewing for a long time but once it overflowed all hell seemed to break loose. I always think off the 2 revolutions as those kinda scenarios where you could probably never have imagined a "better" outcome or a more peaceful one let alone how different it would have been if there had been a peaceful outcome. For me those events just belong to this category of things that while fascinating and very interesting to study and read about if you tried to imagine how the world would turn out without them you would probably send yourself a bit mad. The soviet revolutions are absolutely one of those areas of history I tend to personally overlook when talking about history with friends because I know very little about it. This was definitely a interesting video that might spark a small urge to look deeper into it

A Lenin himself once said "Before it happens Revolution seems impossible, after that - inevitable".

I guess since you've watched this now you should probably watch their Decembrists 2 part series that talk about Russia's first revolutionaries. Btw, the word Soviet is actually just a word meaning something like government council, or just council. A lot of people forget about the many wars that happened right after WW1 ended, so many people seem to think that nothing happened after the peace was signed but the new nations that came out of it, most of the time they had to fight. Even Germany had a few communist revolution attempts.

For ten points, can anybody tell me what was the dominant ethnic group among the Bolshevik revolutionaries? For a further ten points, who funded them?
