I do regularly get told things like that, but I've never been anyone else, so don't know how to compare!!! What I think makes my patients most comfortable is the hours and hours and hours of theoretical and in person work learning I have done (and continue to do) about behavior, behavior modification, lower stress handling techniques, and my unwavering insistence that we don't force animals who are quite worried/scared. I will *always* problem solve a way that works for my patients with the least distress possible because I want their next appointment to be better than this one so that I can give the absolute best long term care to my patients. 🐾💜

@@VetMedCorner I agree. But that used to be the way. Just do whatever you Gotta do, and the animal will get over it. A friend got a puppy a couple of months ago, and wanted to crate train him. I offered to help him to answer any questions he had. The next day my friend was cranky because the dog had been whining all night. I asked why, and he said that he'd read an article that said you need to shove the dog in the crate and leave it there all night, no matter how much it cries . We had a talk. As a result, two things have changed. The dog now loves the crate. It's his own spot in the house, and he'll go there on his own several times every day. The other thing is that my friend no longer calls his dog "it". and both of them are much happier now. Our pets deserve better, and I'm glad the old ways are being replaced.

Hi there, I'm the person who suggested reacting to this video. First of all, thank you for taking the time to look at it and educate us on how to better owners. Secondly, I'm so sorry for making you sit through this video. I recommended the video because I was disturbed by how many of these videos were being showcased as cute or funny to such a big audience when things were obviously not okay, and I thought a vet would be a good counter voice, but I was inconsiderate to you when doing so. I feel like my comment to you wasn't an adequate warning for just how awful some of these videos were. I commented a couple weeks after seeing the Daily Dose video, and I think I'd forgotten how shocking it was. I've learned a lot from your videos and appreciate the advocacy you do through this channel. Sorry for making your day harder than it needed to be and thank you for all the work you do.

I plan on sharing it with other animal professionals that I know later today, when I'm more able to deal with the discussion that will follow. And I'm keeping it in my back pocket for whenever I need an educational video. Thanks Dr. Em.

I am always careful to only approach these sorts of videos when I have the capability to cope with it as I agree with you that it can be educational for people. I really appreciate you making this suggestion as I'd never heard of this video or channel before you told me about it! I was wondering - do you think it would be beneficial if I compiled some animal videos that were *actually* worth watching? Maybe in December? It'd be so nice to have something on the Internet that's showcasing animals who aren't being hurt/scared... But I don't know if you think I should?

Yes yes yes to putting stickers on doors. When my beagle girl was younger she did after bath zoomies outside and ran full speed into our back sliding door (thick safety glass) And cracked the glass. There’s no way I thought this was funny in fact I was petrified and immediately rushed her to the vet (luckily she was fine apart from being very stressed) Lesson learned and I immediately put stickers on the door and a big line of tape so she can see when the door is closed. From now on door stays open after baths. I did not find any of these videos even remotely amusing 😟

Reading what your beagle did made me gasp and then relief from learning that she ended up being okay. You did the absolute right thing in bringing her to be examined, and I hope that she was given some pain medication as I'm certain these dogs have a headache/neck pain/feel stiff/feel sore after these sorts of things. Thank you for putting stickers/tape on there to help your dog out, that's absolutely the right thing to do 🥰 I hope this video will reach a couple people who will go out and put something on their homes to prevent injuries in their pets 🤞

I remember taking my dog to the Vet for the first time. She was 5months young and had very typical signs of hip dysplasia. They let her walk 3m and diagnosed: "Everything's fine, go home." I strongly disagreed but thought - Well, I am not a Vet... 2 months later I carried her to the Vet... and said "I insist that my dog has severe hip dysplasia." They agreed to do an x-ray and told me to pass her to them. I insisted that that dog, who is scared of everything and only trusts me (I saved her from enclosure & left to starvation) needs me around until she's sedated. They wouldn't allow it. When I came back in the afternoon, the Vet said:"Your dog indeed has severe hip dysplasia." And when I got her back, she pulled like 10 horses out of the Cabinet and I couldn't walk her nowhere near that spot anymore. I had to re-establish her trust and did a lot of training to desensibilize. I would even go to that Cabinet without appointment, enter, reward her, cuddle her and walk out again. When vaccines where to be updated, they messed up again - 3 needle sticks for 1 vaccine. I went to a new Vet and explained how terrified my dog was - She grabbed her with no warning, literally smashed her on the table and said "This dog just needs to get over herself!" My dog bit her (not even pass her skin, just desperate chewing) and she said harshly:"Next time muzzle her!" I said "There won't be a next time, and don't you dare billing this appointment."

You might not like the 2 leg tricks but the minpin is like 13 lbs so proportionally her joints are much more wear resistant than a larger dog. Can you make a vídeo picking the dog in the correct way? I want to adopt a small dog and I don't wanna to make him hurt
@VetMedCorner3 ай бұрын
Excellent question! A bunch of these already exist, let me grab one for you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/boKpf3xjf8SdY9Usi=6FoaqgUH9n_x6Vhh Depending on how small the small dog is, after you stand up, you may end up doing what this person describes and shifting to a one handed hold where your arm is supporting their back end while your hand is supporting under their chest and they are nestled between your body and your arm. Something else that's possible to do is teach your dog to jump up into your arms while you are crouched down. But as is noted in the above video, don't let them jump down as that does often result in injury. No matter what size your dog (or cat!) is, it's very important to work with a skilled, strictly positive reinforcement trainer to learn how to teach your dog to enjoy/feel comfortable with being picked up. Many small dogs have their body language ignored, and people just force them, which isn't appropriate.

Dr Em, I have two requests for videos. Please ignore this if they wouldn't be good videos or if they aren't worth the effort. I'd love to see a video on dog and cat body language. Something like that would help people understand why you say the animals in this video were stressed. To say nothing of how it will help them understand their own pets. Maybe a short section at the end for birds and reptiles and so on might also be helpful, if you're able. I'd also like to see a fun video, maybe something like you reacting to genuinely joyful pet videos. I'd also like to share the hell out of it so that my friends can see what a truly happy pet looks like in videos like this. If you've already done one like this, apologies, I've missed it. Whether you can make these videos or not, thanks so much for reading the comments!
@VetMedCorner3 ай бұрын
I really appreciate the video recommendations!!! The biggest reason I haven't done anything about body language is because it's such an immense subject that I'm trying to figure out how to distill it into a 10ish minute video while still doing the topic justice. But I will absolutely keep the topic on my list and try to problem solve it as best I can!!! I would *love* to highlight some videos that show some animals doing appropriate behaviors and not experiencing pain/fear/stress/unsafe situations. If you have any specific suggestions, I would be happy to add them to my notes for that video! ETA - the closest I've come to this so far are my videos highlighting some wonderful R+ trainers.
@nsv6743 ай бұрын
@@VetMedCorner I don't know how to distill body language down to 10 minutes, but maybe a couple of videos could be sufficient? The first one could cover fear and anger and so on, and the next one could cover emotions that we hope to see in our pets. As for the fun video, I just realized that that's something you could do on a regular basis, maybe even monthly. There's certainly enough content out there, I'm sure. And that also might be a way to cover body language a little at a time. I know every Monday all my friends start to share cute animal videos, in the hopes of boosting themselves to get through the week. Those videos are really popular, and adding a little education might even be welcome. Especially if it shows people how to understand the positive body language.

@@VetMedCorner just brainstorming, I think doing just one little thing on body language at a time might be helpful. I feel pretty good at interpreting my dogs body language, but maybe doing smaller specific things could help break it into videos, like different ways dogs might ask for you to keep patting them, vs when they had enough? My girl smacks us with her nose when she wants more. She knows every 15-20 seconds I stop patting to check in, and sometimes before I even get to check in she's already preemptively smacking me with her nose for more. That could be a small enough subject for a video. It is hard though because usually it's so many different things combining to get the whole picture. Other examples could be examples of appropriate and inappropriate play with dogs, showing a good example of a dog checking in, and role reversal, vs when a dog is being pushy to another dog. Then a comparison video about dog human play And dog cat interactions too and how to tell good interactions with dogs and cats (this is one I admittedly am not always good at but I also don't have a cat) The shake off and it's different meanings With socialization, how to tell with puppy body language that they're comfortable and under threshold while still experiencing new things and expanding their boundaries A dog that's curious vs scared about something new Generally, thinking about it in situations I think might be more conducive to a short video
