I bought a 10 yr old maltipoo who was very active when I got him & he tore both knees (Rt knee & Lt knee ligaments) within 6 months of each other. Going thru that whole long process that I had to deal with alone & for the first time was very tough. (Financially, long recovery of not letting him jump at all, etc.) But like everything, after you get thru it...you'll feel like a pro & will help others get thru it! My dog is now 13 & still runs & jumps like he never had a problem. It will be great. Love you all!!!!

I had the human version of this surgery in November where they attach a piece of ligament across your patella with a screw. I was also going to have the tiba realignment however it ended up tracking ok once they opened my knee up. It has to be one of the most painful surgeries I’ve had but I’m glad I had it done, I have so much more confidence running, walking etc that my knee won’t give out. I know this is completely different to doggies but I thought it might be interesting. I’m going to insure my boy after watching this video to ensure I can pay for surgery should god forbid he ends up with any of the following problems. Wishing you all the best!

You need to tell your breeder what is going on because it is genetic. Get the best surgeon you can find if you decide to do it. Lots of research! I am a long time Cavalier owner. There could be other alternatives. Maybe even stem cell injections.

I personally wouldn't put my dog through that operation unless I really had to (in pain) I put a thick sponge on the floor for Alfie to get on the bed/ settee so it's not so high & he as a softer landing. Hope both will be ok bless them ❤️🐶

Tough decision for you both to make. My beagle had to have both of his knees done. My orthopedic vet told us that when one knee goes out usually the other goes out within 6 months to a year and he was right. Recovery time was easier than we thought it would be. So glad we had it done. I am sure with the help of your vet you will know what is best for the girls.

I have a 10 year old Cavelier Lilly. When she was 3, we found out she had 2 stage 3 luxating patellas. We had it looked at because she was having a problem with one of them. We had the one causing the problem surgically corrected. While she was recovering (it did take about 6 weeks), she wasn't allowed to jump up onto anything or down from anything. She got so used to waiting for me to pick her up or put her down, that even after she healed, she still waits for me to pick her up or put her down. I think because of this, she's never had to have anything surgically corrected on the second knee. I think you're such attentive pet parents that if either of them started having a problem you'd know it right away and could get it taken care of then before it caused major damage. Good luck and best of health to your lovely caveliers. I love watching they're antics.

Such a difficult decision to make, but you are the best dog parents EVER! It is so difficult to limit a dogs natural instinct to run and jump even with soft surfaces. Do not rush into surgery. My 6 year old japanese spitz has one knee luxating and he was diagnosed early about 1 year old. He is still fine. I help him with comming on the bed/couch, no jumping not much running and no stairs. Walks are good as they strenghten the leg muscle. And dont let the girls be overweight. It puts more pressure on the joints. Feed sardines, salmon, supplement like glide helps, green lipped mussels enriched food is great too.

Dogs don't know to sit still. To get good xrays, you need to maneouvre the leg around a fair bit, and many dogs don't co-operate. Especially knee xrays. Sedation makes the process quicker, more accurate xrays and less stressful for many dogs. So yes, sedation for xrays is often times not only beneficial, but entirely necessary.

I actually have an appointment for my Chihuahua, same issue, so I am glad I found this video. It is so informative that I think I am going to cancel my appointment. My Chi is only 6 pounds and thinking of putting screws in her knees and 6-8 week recovery is too much unless she was in dire pain I don't think I will do it. I will go with Chiro and acupuncture first and I started her on a great supplement for joints and bones and in just a few days, I have seen a slight improvement so I will continue with this. I will follow your story and see what you decided since I see this video was 5 months ago. Best of luck.

Thank you! Have you had a consultation with a surgeon? What stage is your chihuahua' knee? Our girls were stage 2 asymptomatic so we opted for no surgery. They have no pain, no limping and have been living just fine up until the moment we found out. So we will keep it this way :) We are also on hip and joint chews.

@@herkythecavalier My consultation is on Monday but after seeing your video I thought I should probably cancel. My dog does limp, like all of a sudden her knee locks up, she hops on her 3 legs then I stand her so she can stretch it out then she is fine. Her vet said with Chiropractic care she is confident my dog will be fine so I am on the fence about seeing the surgeon. The consult is not cheap so I am trying to decide whether to keep it or not because in reality I don't think I would put my dog through surgery, she is already 9 yrs old :( I suppose I just wanted to see what my options were.

Hello! I normally don't comment on KZbin videos, but I wanted to send you my feedback as my dog has had two ACL surgeries since 2015. Two cruciate ligament tears due to luxating patellas. After the surgeries, I came across article after article (from holistic veterinary care websites) that promotes the idea of exhausting other options before deciding to go forward with surgery, the most notable option being physical therapy. My dog, Taylor, to this day does at-home PT with me daily along with once a month appts with a professional canine physical therapist....and in the back of my mind I always wonder if I did this BEFORE the ACL tears, maybe the tears would have never occurred. So...if physical therapy is a possibility (financially and time-wise), I would highly recommend it before resorting to surgery at this time. Wishing you all the best!! ❤🐾

The cavalier are fragile about that, hernia and heart. I had 3 cavaliers and the puppy is coming around 20th June. Vanille just passed 6 weeks ago had hernia and heart. Hernia it's 6 to 8 week blocked in 1m2 NO walk at all to make business you MUST carry your dog to the garden and ... wait, no walk. The vet told me the worst thing with a dog (small dogs and specially with cavalier), it's jump all the time sofa floor; bed floor. After the hernia, 3 years ago, she umped 7 times on the sofa, all the time I had to put them on same to go down. Courage !

So surprising for sure, I feel bad you all of you but I don't think I would go through the surgery at this time. Knowing all the other issues that occur in Cavaliers something else is likely to happen before this becomes worse. I'm on my 3rd Cavalier now and thankfully he's the healthiest one I've had. I would just change their routines to avoid stressing the knees. And that last picture of them laying on the floor together at the vet was Priceless ❤️

My puppy (Cavapoo) has luxating patellar too. We bought her without knowing the consequences of it (the keeper told us she would "outgrow" it, total BS.) She's 6 mths old. This channel made me feel like I'm not alone. But I can't find a pet insurance company to cover it since she was already diagnosed.

If they were my babies I'd wait on the surgery. Yes certain breeds have a tendency towards luxating but the breeders need to seriously think about where they go with their lines. You are being good pet parents and it isn't an easy decision but they seem happy. If you can control pain or discomfort without surgery I would focus on that. Prayers for you all! This really breaks my heart too!!! My Banjo has the same thing and we decided to treat him conservatively, but sometimes he really limps! He is 7 now. He did tear his ligament when he was younger and we had to limit his mobility. It was so hard to do all day!! We bought a playpen and carriage and took him everywhere so he didn't feel left behind and scared. I truly feel your pain! Our Banjo has long legs like Milton. Just know whatever you do will be right. You are her parents and love her.

My Cavalier, Kallie had a luxating knee. It never worsened where she couldnt walk, she would run like the wind, until she got to be about 10 years old. It was her heart condition that slowed her down, not the knee. We did give rimadyl for arthritic pain, for about a year before she passed.

i'm sorry both dogs have the issue and it's very over whelming both emotionally and logically. The best thing I can tell you is my Cavalier has the condition in both back legs, one was a 1 the other a 2. That was when he was 3 and he is 8 now. i chose against the surgery do to some after problems the dogs encounter. I just don't let him do the famous spins. Now both legs are a 2 but he really isn't effected by it. He's careful around bigger dogs because in play they can toss him. I'm sure you will make the best decision for your girls. You all are in my thoughts.

I bought steps for my 2 they use it to get up on the sofa to sit by us , one a Cav and one a King Charles toy spaniel, both breeds are prone to luxating patella. No jumping allowed. I wonder if a chiropractor would help if there is such a thing for dogs. ? I know mine fixes my knee which slips out of place. Try not to worry too much, many dogs live a long life with this problem. My other dog a toy spaniel passed away aged 14 in Dec and had this problem, it was his heart that gave out.

To help Herky with her vet visit Anxiety, try taking her to the vet and sit in the room, walk around the clinic and give her lots of praise and treats. Dont schedule an appointment just take her in and try to associate the vet as a place where she gets praise and treats. Not all small breeds have it, the well bred dogs (even small breed) usually don't have it. Because good breeders won't breed with a dog that has luxating patellas! It's mostly hereditary so it says a lot about the breeder, not the breed. I have 2 smaller/medium sized cairn terriers, one is adopted and one is from an amazing breeder. The one that is adopted had patellar luxation on both knees (she tore her CCL 2 years ago and had to have surgery so they fixed the luxation too at the same time) she is now recovering from the second leg surgery because she started limping due to the cartilage damage caused by the luxation in the other leg. And the well bred dog has amazing and strong knees. Good genes to a long way. We also waited for the surgery but I wish I hadn't with her. Because she now has unfixable cartilage damage (10% on her kneecap, 25% on the femur) and arthritis on that knee, so even with surgery she will never be really pain free. She's only 4 btw.

I think its common for all spaniels to have that. My last cocker, he had that scince he was about 3. we didnt do anything bc he wasnt in pain even tho vet said something about it. i just brushed it off. he lived untill 13. Thats a long time for a dog. Now i have a cavelier puppy. Shes doing fine for now. But she's sleepin on orthopedics bed bc i'm trying to avoid pain for my cav. If i were u, milton is not in pain that much, she's not whining or anytjing, so i'll just buy her a orthopedics bed, and see what happend. Thats my advice for u.

So sorry to hear about Milton and Herky both having the luxating patellas. I know it could be very uncomfortable for them. Our dog had it with one of her hind legs. It would go out every so often and she would start limping. After discussing the options with our vet, we decided to wait on surgery. We started giving her hip & joint supplements which really helped cut down on the episodes. She lived to be almost 10 and never did need the surgery. She was so much better once we started the supplements. If it had progressed and was worse, we would have opted for the surgery. Pet insurance really helps when you have something unexpected come up like that. We will keep you all in prayer and hope for a good outcome for both pups. Try not to fret too much, which I know is hard for any parent.

One day I got home from school and when I tried to lift my cavalier( he was 7 months I think then) he started crying. I tried for a second time, same thing. And I went crazy, I was so so so scared, didn’t know what is happening or what is causing the problem, where is the problem, I thought even that he may have eaten something. I rang my mom, she came home and we went to the vet right away, without having an appointment. The doctor told us that doggie has a luxation. He gave us some meds... I really hope that both Herky and Milton are okay, sweet little cuties ❤️ The decision for the operation is yours and it’s a hard one. If you decide to operate, does this mean that they cannot jump/ play at all or just for the recovery period? Or they can’t jump know at all. I just didn’t understand that. Cause they are dogs and they SHOULD play...I hope everything is fine with the doggies ❤️ praying for you

I am sorry you have to go through this. I hope that they don’t show any discomfort for a long time. You should let the breeder know so she stops breeding their parents to prevent this from occurring to other pets, just like the vet said, this is hereditary.

I wonder how much of this consultation is sales related. Couldn't you provide strengthening therapy so that the ligament can stay in place?!.. I wouldn't trust everything they say without proper research, cuz that's how they make their money!!!
