Maite, a Latina lesbian, struggles with coming out to her mother.
Director's Note:
First of all, I want to thank everyone who supported and helped create this short film. This short film was a no budget film that was shot in a span of two days. I could have not done everything without the help of my crew, my family, and my friends who supported this project from the beginning. That being said, this is my first short film that tackles issues that are important to me. My goal as a filmmaker has always been to shed light on issues that are important and to give a platform to people that are often underrepresented in films. I am extremely happy with this film and I could have not ask for a better support system. Thank you and enjoy!

This was such a beautifully filmed short. It says a lot about the struggles millions of teens go through everyday. Honestly speaking, I'm from India and in my country forced marriages and terrible anti-gay therapy sessions are pretty common to "heal" gay people (honor killing and corrective rapes, though uncommon, happen at times too). People have different opinions on coming out and facing the society and the family. In my personal opinion, I think there's no formula of coming out. Everyone lives in a unique environment. You know your surroundings and your parents better than anyone else. So don't get emotional or motivated by someone else to come out when you feel it's still not the time. Take your time, get financially independent and then come out. If your family and friends accept you then it's cool, even if they don't, atleast you would be the one to shut the door on their face instead of being kicked out of your house or forced to torturous therapies or getting no financial support from your folks during your teen years.

@Dallas Westbrook can't agree more with you. The best way to deal with homophobia is to be prepared for the worst outcome even at the best of times. Declaration of love can wait, though it's really hard to pretend to be someone you are not at times but people's safety comes first.

J Cassidy You can't do that, it's not fair to you nor your parents. Parents only want the best for their kids, even if they're grown. If push comes to shove, you may have to do what you said. You never know unless the subject arises. But if they [the parents] are as this mother was portrayed then yes have your bags packed, a job ready, a place to lay your head, and a good person that will let you put your head on their shoulders and have a good long cry. Well, that's my opinion.

Superb treatment of an crucially important topic. Everyone's a victim in this film - mom, daughter, lover - rooted in fealty to a harmful, bogus cultural norm. Notice that the daughter is a devout Christian - that's the director's final image, a crucifix in the daughter's car. The daughter conforms to the norms most important to her mother, but that's not nearly good enough. I feel so badly for the partner, powerless in losing her friend. Now we know, or should, that partners are just as anxious about how the "coming out" moment will go as the person coming out.

Whatever the country, it's always the same, well, most of the time. When I told my mother she asked me what she had done wrong. She also wondered what the people SHE knows would think. After a while, she said, ok you're THAT (she couldn't even say the word) but can't you stay alone, so that nobody knows (by "nobody" she meant her friends, I suppose). And all this came from a woman (my mother) who has always told me that being gay was ok. When I reminded her those words, a bit confused, she said "yes, but not for my daughters!". I should add that she has 2 daughters, we are both lesbians and came out at the same time. Maybe that was a bit too much for her. Years later, she kind of accepted it as she doesn't want to lose, but it still not easy between us.

This happened to my cousin. She was going to tell her mom. Before she open her mouth. Her mother said= I preferred that my daughter becomes a prostitute instead of a lesbian. My cousin left the room. Never told anyone about her lifestyle. Yet the whole family knew. But disproved. She asked me if I was gay. I said yes. We went to a gay club in New York, called Escuelita. Years later, she met a nice woman. They had plans to marry. She ask me to be the best man (I'm butch) Unfortunately she got sick. One foot had to be amputated. She couldn't deal with it. Broke up with the girlfriend. Let herself slowly die. To my cousin Nancy REST IN PEACE
