Medical research has been at a near standstill for quite some time. In 1933, Ernest Rutherford, the father of nuclear physics, stated that controlled nuclear reactions and nuclear energy were wishful thinking or at best centuries away. With just a handful of very smart people working on it, we know what happened. Today, around the world, hundreds of thousands of intelligent individuals with incredibly powerful computers are working on AI and quantum computing. What we may think is decades away could be just around the corner.

Thank your publishing this extremely important lecture. Well deserved, one of the most gifted humans living was awarded the highest academic accolade. We all should be grateful that Dr. Hassabis directed his talent towards the field of proteins research, and using AI (finally) in a benefitial way. We can not yet fathom the relevance of his research and resulting "hands-on" applications for the future of humanity. Chapeau! Shockingly ONLY 15,000 views within one week after publishing. That is as of today 0.00000183022% of the world population. Barely nobody.

What a brilliant man. A terrific speech and extraordinary achievements, yet so modest in his self-presentation. Thank you Demis Hassabis.

The problem with any Google product is that the company thinks it has the right to track users, collect their browsing habits, and target ads and such to the users. Google has even scraped user private information, which should be illegal.

Thanks for a great insight into AI. As a layman, I could not help thinking of fractals and how they generate images similar to those found in nature, the ultimate AI. Is fractal mathematics used in AI?

Perhaps this algorithm for visual representations of DNA and RNA bases could have practical use for AI. It is based on the idea that all RNA/DNA basis could be represented as five discrete values of the gray-scale: U=black(100%), C=dark(75%), A=gray(50%), G=light(25%) and T=white(0%), while the linear DNA/RNA structures could be converted into 2D images built of 3×4 basic matrices. In this representation the value difference between neighboring bases is 25% and between the base-pairs it is 50%. (DNA Semantics)

Thank you kindly for sharing! I'm a big fan of unique and elegant names. I'm wondering -what- if your username Vetenskapsakademien has a specific or approximate meaning; for some reason it's pleasing to look at even though it's really long and not intuitive in the languages I speak, even past all that the name still shines :)

Structure is dual to function -- protein folding. The shape, structure or syntax of a protein determines its function, goal or purpose -- protein folding is dual. Syntax is dual to semantics -- languages, communication or information. Large languages models or neural networks are using duality -- information is dual. If DNA is a language or code then it is dual -- the double helix should be called the dual helix -- the code of life is dual. The Krebs energy cycle is dual -- clockwise is dual to anti-clockwise. Plants and trees utilize the clockwise Krebs energy cycle. Mammals and humans utilize the anti or reverse Krebs energy cycle. Synergy, syntropy is dual to energy, entropy -- energy is dual. "Always two there are" -- Yoda. Hydrophilic is dual to hydrophobic -- hydrogen bonding or the backbone of DNA, acids are dual to bases!

In the past, when religion was the mainstream approach to understanding the world, people were looking at physics with the same scepticism some people are looking at AI today. AI is just the next step in controlling the world, with little understanding of the concepts (as in quantum physic) because they are beyond human comprehension

A Nobel prize for a glorified regression model. Can it do the opposite? Given a shape find the protein? Ermm no..
