Remember the part where Malarky is talking with the German prisoner about how they lived 100 miles apart? He didn't live a 100 miles away from Malarky they worked right across the road from each other. The writers didn't think people would believe it so they changed it to 100 miles.

The Volksdeutsche soldier Malarkey met wasn’t killed by Speirs with the other D-Day prisoners. Malarkey met him on D+3 if I recall correctly, but they wanted to show it and it wouldn’t fit anywhere else in the narrative

The scene where Winters sticks his head into the back of the truck to check on the guys is understated but great. He knows there was some tension between he and Guarnere and that it needed to get worked out quickly and preferably low key. By stopping and checking on them, sharing a joke and sharing the uncharacteristic drink (not to mention busting Guarnere's balls a little), he became more one of the guys. He's undeniably in charge but that scene cemented the dynamics between them all for the rest of the war.

I just watched an interview with George Luz's Son, he talked to Buck Compton about this event and Buck got his Thompson from an injured Lt on the side of the road. The gun was ejecting unspent rounds due to a broken Firing Pin. So in this episode you will see the Thompson not work, and Buck continuously working on it.

The men were ordered not to take any prisoners on D-day. With 90% still unaccounted for and deep within enemy lines with no resources to house and keep track of the prisoners and the possible chance the beach landings could fail. I could imagine the hard decisions the fighting men had to make that day.

FOXTACO! Two things I want to make you aware of that’ll come after the series but are still “band of brothers” content: 1) there is an “aftershow” where they interview all the vets and you get an expansion of what they say called “We Stand Alone Together” which is worth a watch. 2) I have seen not 1 person react to this on KZbin but it is hysterical! Ron Livingston (Nix’s actor) was tasked with recording all the actors training as they prepared for the show. It’s titled: Ron Livingston’s band of brothers full video diary” Even if you don’t react to either on the channel I think you’d love watching them! Can’t wait to see more man!

I was stationed at Fort Campbell in the 1980's with 1/187th Infantry , the Rakkasans, in the 101st. I went to the museum once. I already knew the history but to be in the presence of these relics of another time... It filled me with sadness. I felt a kinship with the men and boys in the photos on the walls. ☮️

I will say that looking at the account of the attack on the battery on the YT channel 'The Operations Room' nobody runs out into the field to get a luger. In all of the battles dramatized there are some dramatic licences taken. This incident, which would be insanely risky, seems to be one of those instances.

Thanks for another great reaction! This was their first time in combat. Nearly every trooper later interviewed said that he would never have taken the chances he took that day after becoming a veteran of combat. Think of Hoobler trying to get himself a Luger. Think of Spiers taking the last 105 from outside the trench. They learned, thank the Lord.

My father and uncle fought in Sicily, Italy, and Holland. They had two standing orders in the Canadian 1st Div: No prisoners unless ordered. Leave no enemy alive behind you. I've heard this from many Canadian veterans of WW2. Prisoners are those who manage to hide during the initial assault and are policed up by follow on guards units. Some people say there was a special order on D-DAY to not take prisoners for the first 24 hours. That may or may not be true, but it's an order that didn't have to be given. It's SOP for an assaulting force. This is total war.

The killing POWs points to a logical conundrum with paratroopers who are intended (in this case) to be dropped behind enemy lines. They have no facilities, logistics or men to spare to process, contain, or guard enemy who surrender. Allegedly their orders were not to take prisoners during Overlord.

I've seen others get upset by Speirs' shooting of the German POW's, saying "geneva convention" etc. Yes, but...they're in the middle of an invasion who's success is still in question, the infantry is still trying to get onto the beaches... What exactly are they supposed to do with prisoners? Where would they put them? Spiers did what he did & the higher ups looked the other way. War is hell.

According to a video by some of the sons of Easy Company vets, Lt. Buck Compton lost his weapon in the jump but acquired a tommy gun from a soldier who broke his leg. What Compton didn't know when he attacked the trench at Brecourt was that firing pin was broken and he was nearly shot by the wounded German. Compton tries to make it work through part of the scene, but ends up using grenades instead. Some scenes are fairly accurate, others are altered to fit into the storyline. Malarkey's meeting the German from Eugene happened several days after D-day. Malarkey's dash for a luger was shorter than shown.

Supposedly one of the reasons why the airborne troops were scattered to hell and gone was because the planes were flying too low and too fast. They were going so fast that the troopers got caught up in what’s called the prop blast. The blast was so hard it tore through the ropes connecting them to the leg bags & their guns. Many of the men left the planes armed & with supplies & landed unarmed with no supplies.

During the initial parts of the Normandy invasion, prior to the allied troops solidifying their beachhead, all the soldiers were under orders to not take any prisoners, and if any *were* taken anyway (it was considered understandable that it would happen despite orders because a human's compassionate first reaction to a surrendering enemy is to *NOT* kill that enemy -- the prisoners taken would be eliminated as quickly and as humanely as possible, and the landing troops did not have the force available, nor the resources, to hold and care for prisoners.

funny thing i watched the son of Lutz talk about what happened with Bucks jammed Thompson smg, if you watch closely he spends a lot of time trying to fix it. turns out it wasnt his issue he lost it in the jump but came across a sgt or something with a broken leg and got it from him. his logic to convince him to give it up was, if its allies who find you, you wont need it. if its germans they will shoot you anyway but maybe without it they wont so just give it to me. turned out the firing pin was broken the whole time anyway 🤣 poor guy

The subtitles for Band of Brothers (and The Pacific) are baffling bad, particularly when it comes to historical military terminology. The person who transcribed the lines clearly didn't have a script (or the script was way off from what they ended up shooting) and they just typed what they thought they heard, so they are WAY off sometimes. If you ever read something in the subtitles that makes absolutely no sense, it's not you, its the error-filled captions.
