( Disclaimier) I would NOT recommend ear buds for this one, if you are someone who wears them during vids.I had some MIC issues , with that said the show must go on. I ran the audio through two AI enchancers to really try and bring back to natural sound. Patrons saidi it is noticeable but still watchable so I hope you all can still enjoy the video as well. I worked my tail off trying to get the audio as clear as I could.

I am from the Dutch city of Eindhoven, and every year we remember those young men, who came from far away, while they could have stayed home, and live. On September 18th there is a parade, but since most veterans from those days sadly passed away, other soldiers fill in. There are many locations named after them, many Liberation museums. Our grandparents had some bad warstories, but also few funny ones. A soldier kicked down the door, and my grandmother was cooking soup, she didn't speak English. He shouted "Hands up", she said "Yes, we have soup". Handsup sounds like, in our local dialect, Heddesoep. Which means "Do you have soup? The bad ones I will leave behind.

The lieutenant who got shot in the middle of the road for being a dumbass, Robert Brewer, got amazingly lucky. The bullet passed through the fleshy part of his neck in front of his windpipe and his esophogus, right under the jawline. It was a messy-looking, bloody wound, but the bullet literally missed every single vital thing a human being has in their neck. Brewer was able to breathe free and clear, and was even able to talk clearly. Sergeant Alvin Malpre, the medic who tried to help him (and was shot in the leg himself) also got lucky. The bullet that hit his leg lodged in the meat and missed all blood vessels, but it did break his leg. Both men recovered from their wounds and were back with Easy Company eventually. In an interview Brewer related that Malpre asked him, "Lieutenant, are you dead? Because if you are, I'm leaving." Brewer was able to respond, "No, I'm not dead but I don't know why." He worked for the CIA after the war, and died in 1996 from lung cancer at the age of 72. This is not a spoiler, as you won't see him again in the entire series.

The story behind that motorcycle is pretty good. At the end of EP3 you could see Alton Moore and Donald Malarky on that motorcycle. Moore actually stole the motorcycle from a supply storage on Utah beach prior to taking the boat to England. They somehow got the motorcycle onboard, shipped it to England, and while the rest of the company had to take a train back to their base, they drove that motorcycle. So that is why Sobel (as the new S4) is asking Malarky about it.

I had the opportunity to travel to the Netherlands and see some of the monuments and historic sites there. In the United States, we tend to think of World War II as starting at Pearl Harbor. But many nations such as the Netherlands suffered horribly for years before the events that are depicted in this episode. The people lived in fear and poverty. City centers were razed to the ground in bombing raids. Jews and other marginalized or minority groups were shipped off, and never seen again. People knew what was happening but were terrified to say a word. There were those who resisted, at terrible risk to themselves and their families. It’s difficult to imagine what it would be like living in an occupied nation. And they are grateful to the United States and other allies to this day.

Your reactions to the series are great. You get the subtle stuff - like the little jabs at each other that are good natured, spotting the leadership fundamentals, etc - which make your commentary so much better than some of the other reactions I've watched. Thanks for doing them. Small thing about WWII that you probably already know, but the US fought the vast majority of the war in countries that had been conquered by the Germans and Japanese. So they (and the Brits, Canadians, etc) were frequently seen as heroes. Where the Germans pulled out prior to the arrival of Allied troops, the locals would often celebrate being liberated like we saw in this episode. Thanks again for doing this reactions.

There are some liberties taken in the series, including Cobb. Webb described him as "invariably good-natured" in his book. Also, the series neglects to disclose that he had already seen combat in Africa in 1942 before joining the paratroopers.

I think the overall characterization of him was fairly accurate though especially considering that he was court marshaled for dereliction of duty and received a dishonorable discharge. They don't go into it in this miniseries but there is an easter egg to it at the end of Last Patrol where you can see him already having been arrested & in a Jeep with a couple of MPs.

No, the color orange has been associated, particularly in celebrations (if not their old flag), with the Dutch Royal Family, who have been members of The House of Orange-Nassau since the mid-16th century. It's not some WWII resistance thing.

Appreciate your working to bring the audio going, Doc. Worth it. 4:30 Sobel had been assigned to Logistics by this time. In any case, just a little info on Nixon (the guy whose helmet got shot off) and Winters (the guy who didn’t). Richard Winters came from a poor family, so he had to work his way through college. Lewis Nixon III came from a rich family which owned the very successful Nixon Nitration Works company and attended Yale before quitting after his sophomore year to join the Army. (This will become a minor point of interest in a future episode.) Nixon, at this time, was in regimental intelligence. Winters was a monkish introvert who read every Army field manual he could get his hands on, while Nixon was a party animal who loved to drink. The two first met when they were undergoing training to become commissioned officers. It says a lot that these two became the good friends they were.

If you were wondering about the 'we're going back to France' at the end of Ep3 and the still being in England at the start of Ep4 there were 7? or 8? cancelled airborne operations. Basically after the Normandy campaign ended at the battle of the Falaise pocket, plus the allies invaded Southern France in Operation Dragoon the Germans began to remove themselves from France and Belgium as quickly as they could heading for the Siegfried line. So what kept happening was cancelled ops sometimes at the airfield cause the allied ground forces had reached the drop zones. I think the Op at end of Ep3 was the one where the Airborne were to seize bridges over the Seine. The Germans however made no effort to defend or destroy them. This led to a great keenness to get back in and a failure to ? the risks of Montgomery's plan to throw 21st Army group units up just one road, Also the oppression of women who had had relations with Germans on liberation took place all across Western European. Interestingly not that many of. for example. the 25k of Dutchmen who had joined the SS were executed. Many had died on the Eastern Front of course and after they finished short periods of confinement in Dutch prison camps many survivors took a 'vacation' to Vietnam with the French Foreign Legion.

The national flag of the Netherlands may be red, white & blue but orange is the national color. The royal family is the House of Orange & Nassau. When the Dutch teams compete in the Olympics they west orange. The Dutch Royal Family has had possession of the title “Prince of Orange” for centuries. It was created in the 1100s when the county of Orange in southern France was elevated to a principality headed by a Prince. The Dutch took possession in the 1400s and have held it ever since. In the 1600s during the various Catholic vs Protestant Wars the Dutch, led by the Prince of Orange were the primary Protestant army. To this day “Orangemen” means “Protestant Warriors”. Orange Clubs were created in Protestant Northern Ireland and in New Netherlands, the Dutch colony in North America (New York and New Jersey). Syracuse University, located in the former New Netherlands, took the name as the name for their athletic teams. A few years ago they switched to just “Orange” to make it gender-neutral for their women’s teams. This is why there are orange flags all over the Netherlands.

@a.lee713
@a.lee713 Жыл бұрын
Ok, no one's said it yet, so I'm okay to comment. The most likely reason the new LT asked Martin to tap him when the light turned is that he lied about red/green colour-blindness at his physical -- not nerves. A lot of people in ww1/2 lied about ages, asthma, vision, etc, so they'd be allowed to serve. Asking for the tap was much smarter and a more trustworthy decision than relying on noticing the position of the lights.

Excellent reaction, mate. One of the greatest series that shows the courage that men can find within themselves when things are at the extremes of danger. I can't speak for every combat vet out there and will never claim to, but quite frankly I don't give a damn whether you've been in the thick of it or not. We all train the exact same way. If you take your training seriously and eat the same dirt as the rest of us you're just as ready for combat as the guys that have already been. The scene with the Unit Citation that Cobb gets upset about always irritated me. It's not a personal award it's a unit award - one that displays an achievement the unit you're in accomplished. Cobb asking the new guys to take it off is in my eyes disrespectful to the unit as a whole. It's not like they're wearing Purple Hearts despite never being injured, but that's along the lines of how Cobb views it I think, at least in the show.

When the Resistance guy explained that the women were being punished for sleeping with the Germans, I couldn't help but wonder how many of those women did so willingly to win favor with the invaders, and how many were forced to do so. Good reaction. For something related to this but a little different, I can recommend the twin documentaries For Valor - the Victoria Cross, and the Greatest Raid of All. They are documentaries of events but also have very good recollections of actual events, the former including an incredible story of Market Garden from the British perspective, and the latter the little known story of an outrageous raid filled with heroism. Well worth your time and made interesting and compelling by the host, Jeremy Clarkson.

I feel like I'm missing something about the criticism on Cobb in the show. What he said to Miller in the beginning of the episode is totally uncalled for, I agree, but the arguments I've heard people use against Cobb later in the episode always sounded disingenuous. If the argument is that Cobb was being a hypocrite, then it's invalid. He expressed not wanting to go back after experiencing a close call himself, as opposed to calling someone out for receiving credit for something they were absent for. That's calling Cobb out on a claim he did not make. If the argument is that Cobb talked shit so he deserves that suffering, then okay. That one would at least be more honest than calling him a hypocrite, but that's not how I've heard others react when they watch. idk, I have friends who can act real hypocritical sometimes, and I just like to make sure their actions are actually hypocritical before calling it out. Otherwise, I'm just being hateful and disingenuous to them.
