Renée Lemaire, the nurse, was a real person. She died on Christmas Eve 1944 during the bombing, she managed to rescue 6 wounded soldiers from the burning building and when she went back inside to rescue a seventh she died. Paratroopers dubbed her the 'Angle of Bastogne', they recoverd her body and brought it to her parents wrapped in a paratroopers parachute

Unfortunately, people seem to believe that 101st was alone in Bastogne...they weren't. Renée Lemaire work at the aid station of the 20th Infantry Battalion, Combat Command B, 10th Armored Division. Band of Brothers sort of pays some homage to the 10th Armored Division in the episode 5 when a lieutenant pulls up in a jeep and gives them ammo. Combat Command B's 75 tanks and the 705th Tank Destroyer Battalion with 18 tank destroyers kept the German armor from rolling over the 101st.

As a former infantry FMF Corpsman myself, not only did I identify with the hustle to "tactically acquire" supplies, but also having to know the battlefield, know your Marines, and the fact that you never quite get a moment to recover until you are fully on leave. And even that can be a struggle. Medics and Corpsman like you and I, we have a very different experience during our enlistments to most general population soldiers, Marines, sailors, airmmen, etc. I'm so grateful to this show for giving our experiences its full attention. Other series and movies do it to an extent (Generation Kill, The Pacific, Flags of Our Fathers, come to mind), but none quite as powerfully as this episode does. It's tough to watch, and I'm so grateful I've never been through a combat scenario anywhere near as relentless and intense as this was, but I find myself coming back to this episode every now and then because of its cinematic mastery and the brilliant performance of Doc Roe by Shane Taylor. For a story about us Corpsman specifically, I highly recommend Flags of Our Fathers if you haven't seen it yet.

In “Crossroads” Guarnere goes into Winters’. As he’s leaving he asks Winters, Nixon & Welch if they’ve heard of a place called “Lulu’s”. (I think it was Lulu’s). In this episode he’s asking for help from Doc Roe because he’s “pissing needles”. Apparently Guarnere picked up an STD at “Lulu’s House of Ill-Repute”. 🤣😮

I loved that this mini-series dedicated an episode to the importance of the medics, not just treating physical trauma, but also trying to help with the emotional trauma, like when both medics were in the foxhole with Babe after Julian was killed trying to console him. Another reason, besides showing his heroic efforts on behalf of his men, to base this episode on Doc Roe is that it helped show the suffering of the entire company during the siege as he moves around the battlefield trying to help everyone.

I was looking forward to this episode so much because I knew you'd bring out your perspective as a Corpsman. I'd like to point out you had 1 correction for the show this entire episode and it was regarding Doc Roe reporting on the injuries of the man he brought into Triage. In terms of cinema it is so insignificant that most people overlook it without a second thought, and it takes a literal professional in that field to nitpick it. There's a handful of issues from the Infantry side that we could do the same with but they are literally so minor they don't change the show in any meaningful way - and that fact makes this series so damn good. They got as close as they possibly could while still maintaining an engaging story, incredible characters, and the capture of the chaos of war.

You've probably been told this on Patreon, but the two nurses portrayed here were real people. Renee Lemaire was killed rescuing wounded troops from a burning building. Augusta Chiwy was blown through a wall during the bombing but survived. She passed in 2015. There is no evidence that Eugene Roe met either of them, but they were included as tribute to their heroism.

You are correct that there's no evidence that they met, it is somewhat likely that they crossed paths due to them both being there at the same time.

The "funny" part about that air drop in this episode...in real life, the troops got everything they were needing...except cold weather clothing! No jackets, white camos, gloves...none of that was dropped to them! Plenty of food, medical supplies, weapons and ammo.

1:28 Winters was meticulous in his grooming. It was said you could recognize him in pictures, as he would be the only one who was consistently clean shaven. 12:20 I don't know how it's like now, but in WW2, medics were under the direct command of the company CO. That's why the sergeant on patrol requested, rather than ordered, Doc to stay back. Great reaction and insights!

Renée Lemaire was a real person, known as one of the Angels of Bastogne. She was killed trying to save wounded in the aid station. Search the web for The Angels of Bastogne for more on her. There is no evidence that she and Eugene ever met, but it is certainly possible. The black nurse was inspired by Augusta Chiwy, another of the Angels of Bastogne. She lived a very long life and was life-long friends with the aid station doctor. Renée had wanted a white silk parachute for a wedding dress. The doctor wrapped her body in it when he sent her home.

Sorry i just now found you. I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman HM1 in Vietnam (3 Tours). Those two medics in the same fox hole should never be close to each other during combat (That’s one of the first things you learn). One of my tours in Vietnam I was on a ship on the Co Chien River in the Mekong Delta. Me and another corpsman HM3 were the only medical personnel on board. We were taught that during combat conditions we were to be on opposite ends of the ship. The 2 corpsmen we replaced were together during a fire fight and they both got killed. You never remember all the ones that you have treated but you never forget the ones you can’t save. One of my HMC trainers told us 3 rules. 1.Good men will die. 2. Doc can't save everyone. 3. Doc will go through hell to break rules 1 and 2.

Being a medic seems like one of those things that I'd be naturally good at in terms of personality and how I work. But I don't think I'd ever be able to cope with the mental side of things. Bottling up my emotions like that for the sake of keeping everyone else sane would be such a hard thing for me to deal with I can't even imagine. I have the utmost respect for doctors, nurses, medics etc. Especially those in the military. It takes so much strength to do what you guys do.

In all honesty your preparation and proactive takes over....the fear and anxiety leaves and you just trust your training especially on the Military side or the EMT side...the only time I got rattled was when I was checking the consciousness of a 10 month old and her eyes were dilated and she was leaking clear fluid from her ears..and you lips had cyanosis( the were blue)...I froze for like 4 seconds..but then even still the training takes over...if you feel like you wanna do it..go for it...you only live once..and being uncomfortable or scared is a great sign that you're pushing yourself to new boundaries..growth can feel uncomfortable at times but it's worth it 😁

The 101st was completely cut off and surrounded at this point. As someone else said in the comments, the medical company for the division had been captured the week prior. The reason the church seems so disorganized and chaotic as a medical station is because it was. They barely had any resources to treat the amount of wounded coming in. Also, considering this takes place 80 years ago, many modern field medicine practices weren’t being used at this point.

I think the deal with what you were saying about the report and stuff when he was bringing dude is was the fact that they were cut off. During that battle, they were totally surrounded so in this case i don’t think it’s a military makeshift hospital. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure that it was just medics and civilians that were just trying to help the allies and do what they could.

It is unfortunately not widely known that the 101st was not alone being besieged at Bastogne...it is important to note the other units that were trapped with them...especially since the legend of the 101st has grown so large that most folks do not even know that they were not alone. This show does not really pay enough homage to the men of Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division, Combat Command R of the 9th Armored Division, the 705th Tank Destroyer Battalion, or the two battalions of Combat Engineers and four battalions of Artillery...plus all the other Allied personnel that ended up encircled at Bastogne.✌

this is what regular people dont understand, how do you go through years of this, having to be ready, losing people you never going to see again even if they only get wounded and sent back home. How do you go back to civilian life when you've danced with death and seen it take your brother out next to you. I've talked to a lot of vets in my life, from proud world war 2 vets to vietname vets who were kids just trying to survive to get back home only to make it and get spit on wheb they did and called baby killers when they had no choice in the matter. My heart trully breaks for the vietnam guys and I tell you what the end of rambo first blood captures their reality perfectly. I wanrt to bring these peoples stories to the front line again. I want them to talk about what they went through especially when they dont want to. THEIR STORYU NEEDS TO BE TOLD!!

Bastogne is very much considered by a lot of people to be "the beginning of the end" of the war on the western front. It was essentially one of Germany's last great offensives and the depiction of the 101st encircled and trapped.. Absolutely fantastic, and even better shown through Doc Roe's perspective. I really appreciate your insight as always and I'm sure you've already seen ep 7 by now but I'm looking forward to what you have to say for that one as well!

The Division commander, General Maxwell Taylor, was in Washington DC so he missed Bastogne. The Division Artillery Commander, General McAuliffe, was the acting Commander. He’s the one who took the report at the beginning of the episode and responded with “there’s a lot of 💩 headed this way.” The Germans had Bastogne surrounded. No one in or out. They went to McAuliffe and offered him the opportunity to surrender the American troops, including Easy Company. At 22:05 Sink told Easy about McAulliff’s reply. “Nuts” is 1940s slang. It their version of “F….Off”. That’s why everyone is laughing. Because McAulliff cussed out the German commander.
@rollomaughfling380
@rollomaughfling380 11 ай бұрын
Not really. McAuliffe received the German "offer" for the 101st's surrender, crumpled the communiqué and threw it in the trash, saying "Aww, nuts!" a relatively benign expression of frustration. It was only after this, that his underlings were trying to come up with a proper official reply, when a Lt. Col. under him suggested a variation on McAuliffe's original reaction. Everyone agreed so they sent: "To the German Commander. NUTS! The American Commander." McAuliffe was well-known for avoiding the more severe foul language, and the term "Nuts!" here is more akin to the British: "Bollocks!" At any rate, it was a group effort, but it ultimately meant: "Nope."

Hey FoxTaco. 1st, loving these so far, and 0740: on Guarnere's pissing needles and Doc Rowe saying he didn't have Penicillin for his "biroute" . . . Remember last episode when they had downtime in France, and Bill was asking about a place called "Lulu's"? Guess what kind of place that was . . . lol. In fact, there's that whole "You shouldn't drink while on antibiotics" medical policy, which came from this. Correct me if I'm wrong. Penicillin was pretty new in any kind of big supply in 1944, but a lot of GIs, Sailors and Marines who visited brothels on shore leave saw it as a new "get out of jail free card" for the clap (gonorrhea) and even early syphilis. So the official policy was to tell servicemembers that alcohol killed the effects of antibiotics just to scare them off going out drinking and ending up in a brothel again, to protect their supply chain. I dunno if that's true, but it makes for a great story, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. (I also read where certain newer types of antibiotics actually are affected by alcohol consumption, but they are few and far between.) I know this: I've had VA doctors give me that warning (never been to a brothel) and still the warning is printed on antibiotic medication labels. I've brought the issue up with them, and they always give the same lame-ass VA response: "Well, better safe than sorry." It's just like this dopey COVID-era conversation I had with my dopey primary care doctor in 2020, who once gave me drastic diet advice without ever doing an inventory of my dietary routine: "You need to wash your hands to 20 seconds:" "Why is that?" "Well, it takes that long to build up a soapy lather, which is more effective at removing bacteria." "Yeah, but that's for bar soap. I have a foaming hand soap. Immediate foam, so, how long then?" "20 seconds." "Why?" "You need to rub your hands together with the foamy soap." "Like I said, the soap is instantly foaming, so how long now?" "Better to do it for 20 seconds." "Are you reading from a script? You actually managed a medical PhD., and have zero idea how science works, do you?" "20 seconds . . ." The VA system is a disaster.

Shame on Spielberg and Tom Hanks, not one mentioned of10th armor division or the 28th division who fought like hell at Bastogne. The 28 Div took the initial blow from the Germans and absorbed most is it taking a lot of fight out of the bastards. The 10 armor was stationed in the area when the attack came. The 506th & easy were sent in to reinforce 10th armor northeast of Bastogne. There were many heroic units during the Bulge and I feel thay should have been mentioned in the credits at the end. Do you really think at the 506 is going to hold off the Germans without armor support from the 10th.

More: 1) The camp liberation and associated scenes shown in episode 9 are fictional. The camp depicted in Band of Brothers is Kaufering IV which was actually liberated by the 12th Armored Division on April 27, 1945, with some units of the 101st Airborne Division arriving on April 28 and Easy Company arriving on April 29 (with the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion and 36th Infantry Division arriving on April 30). And there were only about 7 prisoners found alive along with about 500 bodies. 2) Easy Company did not liberate Berchtesgaden nor were they the first to reach the Eagle's Nest as shown in episode 10. The 7th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division is credited with the liberation of Berchtesgaden on May 4, 1945, and members of the French 2nd Armored Division are credited with being the first to reach the Eagle's Nest in the early morning of May 5. Easy Company arrived a few hours later. 3) Also, in episode 10 members of Easy Company did not kill an unnamed commandant of an unnamed concentration camp. This is based on the shooting of Franz Ziereis who had been commandant of Mauthausen. He had tried to hide out at his mountain hunting cabin but was spotted and reported. On May 23, 1945, U.S. Army soldiers attempted to arrest him, and he was shot three times trying to escape. He died the next day in a U.S. Army hospital. No members of Easy Company were involved.

Once again not one mentioned of the American prisoners that was slaughtered by machine gun by SS thugs at Malmadene. Word of the slaughter was working its way up and down the American lines, it should of been mentioned by Nix who was a Intel officer. Every soldier said that the word of the massacre inspired them to win this battle
