Had the same kind of problem years ago with a contractor that missed paying the crew for 3 weeks. We finally said enough and just took our wages in tools and equipment. Pretty well cleaned him out.

Exactly... if the "business" doesn't have any money for labor or supplies then that's a huge red flag right there. Especially when it's some Mickey Mouse company that can disappear in a heartbeat. Would maybe be a different story if it was a huge national chain that's established but then again they wouldn't ask for money up front. They're successful with money in the bank. NEVER agree to a deposit BEFORE any work gets done. Most concrete contractors will start after you sign the contract with paying 1/2 the cost after the form set up and just before the pour. Pay the other 1/2 after completion. I know from experience when I had a patio built the workers hired by the contractor were cutting corners and the forms were sloppy. Nothing was dug out and they were setting rebar on the grass. After calling the contractor and getting mixed responses. I told the workers to cease work, leave and locked my gate. Notified the contractor and made him send another crew. This stalled the work for almost 2 months and I thought I was going to have to fire the contractor and get another one to rip the trash out and fix it. However once the new crew corrected it, I let them pour and paid the other 1/2. This method practice protects both parties, remember if they complete and do things right and the homeowner does not pay they know where you live. If you pay them before any work is done, they can vanish.
