Toby's father really did lose his eye while in the service. Toby wrote this song after the world Trade Centers were hit on 9/11/2001, but only performed the song for the troops while visiting them. Some of the soldiers pushed him to record and release the song to the general public. He still performs for and supports our military. Great Reaction.

That was before I was born, however when I learned of this I cried. I knew a man who lost his leg in Vietnam. He told me that when his plane landed in America the one of the men who was carrying his stretcher said " Welcome home soldier. We have to take out the back because the mob in the front will kill you." I'm tearing up even as I write this. That was unforgivable.

the reason for that was the Media. Same as today. They find the one story that makes the US look bad and they repeat it over and over. Thank God most of us learned our lesson from the way the Vietnam veterans were treated and refused to treat all service members with that broad stroke.

@@silence3314 9/11 was one of the reasons we began to pay more attention to _threats from within_ but we seem to have forgotten that what with us all just letting our freedoms be literally taken away one by one, like the right to refuse "medical treatment" and the right to bear arms, I can only pray that we can fight back, because this wasn't a sucker punch rather its come in like a poison dart and as a general population we're almost too tired to rip that dart out before it kills us and fight back against the threats from within.

WizardPandora Exactly. This was written addressing the terrorist attacks that ‘sucker punched us’. Yep we can argue and fight amongst ourselves, but no one else better bother anyone here. It’s a family thing. I heard a guy call in in the radio, after 911. He was from the Dixie south. He said “those the terrorist hit might be damn Yankees to us, but they are our Yankees and we won’t tolerate anyone hurtin’ them. Someone’s about to get their ass kicked by us.” And by golly, he was exactly right. Like Toby said, “Don’t rattle this dogs cage”. We are not called the United States for nothing.

Thank you for your service. My dad was a Korean War veteran of the Army, injured while pulling one of the men in his platoon back to the foxhole. He had shrapnel from a mortar go through his arms and legs and the blast rupturing an eardrum. He was airlifted to a MASH unit and then spent a month in a hospital in Osaka.. Most of his medical was received at the VA and they supplied his hearing aids because it was service connected but he had to pay his own dental too. I heard an interview with Toby Keith saying he never intended to record this song, it was just something he played at the USO shows. After a big shoe in Iraq, he met Donald Rumsfield and Rumsfield told him he should definitely record it and that was when he started to consider it.

Rest easy Toby Keith. Not a big country fan but grew up hearing his music and watching his videos, he really is a legend. 30 year career is something to be genuinely impressed with.

When my late husband returned from Vietnam he burned all his uniforms not because he didn’t love this country but he was so upset about the friends he lost. Two years later when he got called up for reserves we had to go out and buy all new uniforms. Thank you for your service and all those that serve and served
