After the war a communist party took over Poland, they treated Pilecki as a traitor and executed him. Just before he died he said " I've been trying to live my life so that in the hour of my death I would rather feel joy, than fear." and "long live free Poland."

That is because he was an ACTUAL communist. Funny how people forget that. He wanted a peoples ownership but authoritarians did not. In reality those "communists" are far closer to modern capitalism with it's corruption than they ever were to communism. We all know this is true so why the fuck are some morons playing pretend it's not?

Really reminds me of Colonel Klaus von Stauffenburg said before being executed for an attempted assassination on Hitler “ES LEBE DAS HEILIGE DEUTSCHLAND!”

@@You_already_know937Stauffenberg was same anti polish and antisemitic pig as many other nazi Germans that time. He fully supported brutal german politics against Poles and Jews on occupied areas of Poland and further on east. Please do never compare those two men.

I haven't read all the comments, so if this have been written before I apoligisze, this part (from Wiki) is seldom mentioned about him, but shows what he did in addition to the other incredible things this great man did. Pilecki was assigned to a night shift at a camp bakery outside the fence, and he and two comrades overpowered a guard, cut the telephone line, and escaped on the night of 26-27 April 1943, taking with them documents stolen from the Germans. The men fled on foot to the village of Alwernia where they were helped by a priest, and then on to Tyniec where locals assisted them. After that, they reached the Polish resistance safe house near Bochnia, owned, coincidentally, by commander Tomasz Serafiński. At one point during the journey, German soldiers attempted to stop Pilecki, firing at him as he fled; several bullets passed through his clothing, while one wounded him without hitting either bones or vital organs. Outside the camp After several days as a fugitive, Pilecki made contact with units of the Home Army. On 25 August 1943, Pilecki reached Warsaw and was attached to Section II (intelligence and counter-intelligence) of the Home Army's regional headquarters. After losing several operatives reconnoitering the vicinity of Auschwitz, including the Cichociemny Stefan Jasieński, it was decided that the Home Army lacked sufficient strength to liberate the camp without Allied help. Pilecki's detailed report estimated that "By March 1943 the number of people gassed on arrival reached 1.5 million", which was remarkably accurate considering post-war estimates suggest 1.1 million people died in Auschwitz during the war. On 11 November 1943, Pilecki was promoted to Rotmistrz (cavalry captain) and joined a secret anti-communist organization, NIE (both the Polish word for "no" and short for niepodległość "independence"), formed as a clandestine unit within the Home Army with the goal of preparing resistance against a possible Soviet occupation. The Soviet Red Army, despite being within attacking distance of the camp, showed no interest in a joint effort with the Home Army and the ZOW to free it. Until he became involved in the Warsaw Uprising, Pilecki remained in charge of coordinating ZOW and AK activities and provided what limited support he was able to offer to ZOW. In Auschwitz, Pilecki had met the author Igor Newerly, whose Jewish wife, Barbara, was hiding in Warsaw. The Newerlys had been working with Janusz Korczak to try to save Jewish lives. Pilecki gave Mrs. Newerly money from the Polish resistance that she passed on to several Jewish families whom she and her husband protected. He also gave her money to pay off her own szmalcownik, or blackmailer, who said he was Jewish and threatened to report her to the Gestapo. The blackmailer disappeared, and it has been said that "it is likely that Witold arranged for his execution". Warsaw Uprising When the Warsaw Uprising broke out on 1 August 1944, Pilecki volunteered for service with Kedyw's Chrobry II Battalion. At first, Pilecki served as a common soldier in the northern city center, without revealing his rank to his superiors. Later, after many officers were killed in the fierce fighting that occurred during the early days of the uprising, Pilecki disclosed his true identity to his superiors and accepted command of the 1st "Warszawianka" Company located in Śródmieście in downtown Warsaw. Pilecki fought under the nom de guerre "Captain Roman". After the capitulation of the uprising, Pilecki hid a cache of weapons in a private apartment and surrendered to the Wehrmacht on 5 October 1944. He was sent to Germany and imprisoned at Stalag VIII-B, a prisoner-of-war camp near Lamsdorf, Silesia. He was later transferred to Oflag VII-A in Murnau, Bavaria where he was eventually liberated by troops of the US 12th Armored Division on 28 April 1945. Ps. I hope that there someday will be made a movie about this hero.

Terrible that his story ended so tragically. He was tasked with gathering intelligence on the occupying communist forces by the exiled polish government after the war. He was arrested and brutally tortured before his trial, which ended up being nothing but a fabrication. He was falsely accused of espionage and planning to assassinate party officials, and was sentenced to death by firing squad. He was killed by a shot to the back of the head along with 3 of his comrades. His body has never been found, and his story was buried until the collapse of the Soviet Union. There is a bit of a high note however, once his story was discovered, he was posthumously awarded several medals, including the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest decoration.

I would recommend "Hearts of Iron" by Sabaton. It`s about 12th and 9th German Armies who broke from Soviet blocade of Berlin and led 200,000 civilians out of city and surrender to the West. Try lyrics video from Piscator.

Witold Pilecki of Leliwa coat of arms ps. "Witold", "Druh"; underground names "Roman Jezierski", "Tomasz Serafiński", "Leon Bryjak", "Jan Uznański", "Witold Smoliński"; code name T-IV (born May 13, 1901 in Ołońc, died May 25, 1948 in Warsaw) - cavalry captain of the Polish Army, co-founder of the Secret Polish Army, soldier of the Home Army, prisoner and organizer of the resistance movement in KL Auschwitz. Author of reports on the Holocaust, the so-called Pilecki's reports. Accused and sentenced to death by the communist authorities of the People's Republic of Poland, executed in 1948. In the years 1918-1921 he served in the Polish Army, fought with the Bolsheviks during the war. As a cavalryman he took part in the defense of Grodno. On August 5, 1920, he joined the 211st Uhlans and fought in its ranks in the Battle of Warsaw, the battle of the Rudnicka Forest. He was twice decorated with the Cross of Valor. Demobilized after the war. In August 1939, he was mobilized to serve in the Polish Army. After the outbreak of World War II, he fought in the September campaign as a platoon commander in the division cavalry squadron of the 19th Infantry Division of the "Prussia" Army, and then in the 41st Infantry Division in the Romanian suburb. Under his command, during the fighting, the uhlans destroyed 7 German tanks and 2 unarmed planes. His last fights were conducted by his unit as a partisan unit. Pilecki disbanded his platoon on October 17, 1939 and joined the underground. Pilecki was brought to the camp on the night of September 21-22, 1940 together with the so-called with the second Warsaw transport. As prisoner No. 4859, he was the main organizer of the underground activity in the camp. In a network he organized named by Pilecki ZOW (Military Organization Union) . On the night of April 26-27, 1943, Pilecki and two fellow prisoners managed to escape from the camp. In 1943-1944 he served in the Division of the Third Kedyw of the Home Army Headquarters (including as the deputy commander of the "Kameleon" - "Jeż" Information and Intelligence Brigade), participated in the Warsaw Uprising. Initially, he fought as an ordinary shooter in the NSZ "Warszawianka" company, later he commanded one of the units of the Chrobry II grouping in Wola in the area of Towarowa, Pańska, Miedziana and Żelazna streets and Starynkiewicza Square - this area was called "Witold's Redoubt"; it was one of the areas kept by insurgents the longest. in the years 1944-1945 he was in German captivity. On December 8, 1945, Witold Pilecki arrived in Warsaw. He was probably arrested on May 8, 1947. While in detention, he was tortured by officers of the Security Office. On March 3, 1948, the trial began before the District Military Court in Warsaw. On March 15, 1948, the captain was sentenced to death. In the second instance, on May 3, 1948, the Supreme Military Court upheld this judgment. The sentence was carried out on May 25 in the Mokotów prison in Rakowiecka by a shot in the back of the head. The executor of the sentence was Piotr Śmietański, known as the "Executioner from Mokotów". His body has been searched to this day. The communist authorities hid their victims in collective, nameless graves.

"Pilecki soon calculated that the food rations that most prisoners received would keep a human alive for only six weeks. A guard told him that if anyone lived much longer than that, it meant they’d stolen food. And the punishment for stealing was death. Pilecki began to realize that he’d willingly walked through the gates of Hell." ...excerpt from allthatsinteresting.com/witold-pilecki ..there is inconsistencies in this alone..because even though Pilecki had hard work labor loading and unloading stones on a wheelbarrow he managed to live for three years himself before fleeing ..!! 3*52 is 156 weeks 156/6=26 so he managed to live 26 times longer then he himself had calculated to do..that´s very very strange don´t you think..!? When you listen to stories from "survivors" or read what they have written and so on it´s always these inconsistencies ..and as I am trying to look at things in a logical way this doesn´t ad up..!!
