I am a VTS with 45 years experience in vet med. I have seen virtually every possible method of placing a IVC, and I think this video is great. Any disagreement I might have are insignificant. I completely agree with the 3 of one antiseptic then 3 of the next concept. It is most correct. I also tape similarly. Nice video!! Thanks 😊

I agree. There are some erroneous IVC videos on KZbin. This is not one of them.

Ideally, the actual contact time for iodine or chlorhex scrub is 5 minutes. Only during surgical scrubbing one has a whole uninterrrupted 5 minutes of contact time. When placing a catheter, it is hard to let the scrub sit for 5 minutes before swabbing with alcohol and placing the catheter.

Do you need to shave off the skin all around like in the video? Or can it be done with just shaving the front of the leg?

This is exactly how we do it at our hospital too!! I'm still learning how to thread off the catheter in which I'm having problems doing, but I'm hopeful I'll get it soon. Thank you for posting this video, you make it look easy

Thank you for doing it this way. This is the only way I've ever seen these taped. My vet school is currently teaching us a different taping method to use in THEIR clinic but tbh... I'm going to go back to this one as soon as I'm done there. It is a thousand times more secure.

Just a question, do you need to shave off the entire area around the leg to place the catheter? Or can you place it without shaving the entire dog skin around like it’s done in the video?

when is the assistant supposed to let go of the vein?

AFTER the actual catheter is inserted and BEFORE the stylet is removed. If you keep pressure on the vein at the elbow, it will make the patient bleed out of the catheter before the technician has a chance to plug it with the T-port. You can see the assistant do this at 2:53 (pause and notice that the catheter is in and the stylet is still inserted).
