8:33 The clumps do not seem to compete with each other for light. Perhaps this is due to the orientation of the grass strip relative to the path of the sun overhead? I ask because more recent advice is to plant single rows @ a minimum one metre vertical interval spacing.

There is plenty of light, even when close to sugar cane. Where did you find the 1 m VI between rows advice.? The standard VI for on field hedgerows is 2mVI, but this is just a rule of thumb. some people plant hedges initially further apart and then add more between if needed. Sugar cane in itself provides good protection and in Fiji and South African cane farms 4 m VI seems to work.
