This movie could have easily been made with a regular actor instead of Rajni but it's refreshing to see that the star power doesn't overshadow the script and storytelling. We have seen Denzel Washington do such stuff time and again in Hollywood and he has perfected the art of keeping it minimalistic and simple without his stardom over powering the content driven films. Credit must be given to Rajni for keeping it understated like Denzel and respecting what the film needed him to do.

The comments section shows how divided the audience are. Either there's someone who's happy that they are not seeing the same commercial cliched formulas or there are people who are unhappy thta there's no same commercial cliched formula. Only when such simple m9vies get accepted, the so called stars will do more of such movies and story will be at the forefront over stardom. So happy that thaliavar chose this movie. I personally felt no lag anywhere and i was happy to see him be subtle and still entertain...

Good comment actually.. people will always be divided.. at the same time they have the liberty to choose but they expect from the movie.... And at the end of the day.. We can't satisfy everyone.. ya it's 50-50 ( commercial plus social msg) But I'm satisfied with what I expected.. Thank you Director Gnanavel sir and Rajni sir for their combined effort to give a good msg to the audience ❤❤

It's a very different film for Rajnikant. Well made and well crafted. Must watch film . Film is drawing more Family crowds to Theatres from today. Individual people have their own views. It's always very Difficult to ipmress every audience . But Director as given his best. 👍 Good movie

This movie follows the lineage of Kaala and Kabali but still better than both. Just one concern is that they could have shown Rana's perspective of corporate business, the absence of which I feel the movie is one sided in the 2nd half.

It could also be a commentary or popular cinema. There are amazing actors but the ones we are beholden to are the "superstars". Hats off to Rajni Sir to take on this kind of movie in his winter years. I will watch tonight but my concerns were whether the cast would be used to full potential

Unfortunately, they really weren't utilised fully. It's a shame but I felt that the big names also gave away any plot twists. As an example, not far into the movie, you realise who Rana is going to be. I feel it was too much for a new director to take this on. It's a shame given the names who were willing to leave their star status to take part.

What...FaFa role dint impress u ?! Oh man, I was shouting love u fahadh loveee u during his critical closure scene !! He was absolutely brilliant and his writing was the most literature like you writing on his part. Let me tell u, there is a common saying "Police kaaran paiyan thirudan..." Here a thirudan becomes an adopted proud son of a policeman and when the hospital guy called " who is the relative of Patrick", the policeman did not even hesitate, and went and signed as his father !! Lovely irony touched ! And u know what, it lovingly depicted that all that petty thief needed was a warm hug and a trust for him to turn this good in life , even more noble than the policeman itself ! It speaks humanity to that level. I'm super shocked that BR easily overlook at many things... I'm ur ardent fan Baddy but oflate ur views r many times biased or atleast appear biased on many nuanced level, u might be doing it without your conscious, but pls introspect and consider our concern too !!

No. I agree with him. It's like he's trying too much with dialogue and mentioned the one lines could be crispier. He didn't mention those are bad. It's like you expect a counter when fafa was there in a scene. Seems forced right? Also, the closure was good but a lot could be explored about their relationship but the movie wasn't about these two characters. Given the procedural it is, it is fair enough to say the actors played their part.

I liked the movie, except one thing. They didn't have to show the main incident multiple times. I went with my daughter and she started crying whenever that incident was shown.

EXACTLY! after a point it felt like a sadistic move to repeatedly keep showing it again and again. I think this issue persists with a lot of tamil and telugu directors where they realllly emphasize on some gruesome event to try and get some emotion out of the audience

Vettaiyan is one of the better films that came out recently where the stardom was used in conjuct with plot rather than dominating it. The crisp and clean film is above the stardom or any individual perfomances. Gnanavel writing

His performance in this movie is not a patch on his recent past movies like kabali or kala that also explored social themes. Amitabh's was the only standout performance in Vettaiyan. I couldn't recall one notable scene in this movie that involved Rajini.

Instead of Amitabh Bachchan, that role should have been given to Mammooty, then he would have completely owned the role. Amitabh is a legendary actor but take him into another language then he becomes fish out of water, he couldn’t adapt to the new language.

Why was Rajini went scott free after the wrong encounter? He himself gave out in the courtroom that a mistake was made. That was the bothering point. It's like the death of the person who was wrongly killed was just a plot point but doesn't have a consequence.

I fail to understand the Audience. I never dared to watch Vettaiyan in Theater fearing regular commercial stuff. I was taken for a surprise when I watched it on OTT. This is no regular Rajini Movie.... It has stuff, it has a plot. We always want stars to play character roles and when they do, we let them down. pushing them to chose a proven masala formula. I really felt the movie was much much better than other recent Rajini Movies... It deserved a better response!

I knew this was a director's movie going in, I knew this wasn't going to be the typical Rajni movie - all fine. But there is too much importance placed on getting big names that gives too much away. You know who Rana is going to be, Amitabachan just shows up in a few scenes pretty much showing the same emotion, and the direction felt very amateurish. The helicopter just lands at the right place? And there is time to reverse drift a forklift truck? Really? I understand the intent, but the execution was poor, predictable twists...so basically it's no longer a twist and uneven tone of slow mo mass moments that looked silly and forced. Its great to see Rajni as always and him doing different roles and as such it feels like a wasted opportunity by the director. Let's move onto Coolie.

Atleast Jailer gave us some highs, this was pretty bland and didn’t feel like a Rajini movie at all. Anirudh music mediocre at best. Sadly his music in commercial films sound the same, similar bgm for emotional scenes, mass scenes.

There was a needless drag after the culprit in the character Natraj was identified. The police, bureaucrats, judiciary etc were not projected in the proper context which is nor in good taste even though it is just a film. The honest police officer in Rajini had to really strive to silence all those in power. Even Amitabh Bachan had to wait for Rajini to accomplish the feat. The story, the twist etc are all good bur the scapegoats were unnecessary and too many. However inspite of the drag, the film was watchable once. Kudos to Rajiniji and Amitabh ji for working si hard in this age to help the cause of the film industry and those making it their bread.

Today every critic is a better actor than any actor and a better director than any director. They know everything about the movies, how an actor should act and how the director should direct. Having so much great knowledge about movies still they are not even capable to make a short movie of 5 mins. I really wish these great critics to direct a movie and teach the world how to make a movie. Even Rajni Sir should learn acting skills and Rajamouli sir should learn direction skills from these great critics.

Bharadwaj rangan makes it clear time and time again that his work is to review and not to make movies. He had even reviewed the Blue Sattai's directorial debut, another Tamil movie critic. See, reviewing is an art parallel to the cinema it is reviewing. And bharadwaj rangan is an undeniable maestro in his art of reviewing and interviewing entertainment. Man has an in-depth knowledge of technicalities that goes into a movie and he has spent a better part of his life talking to the PPL from different movie industries.

ik this is an old example but still if someone eats in a restaurant and says that the food is bad you cannot say to them "nalla ila na neeye paniko yen nalla panu nu solra" because it is our job to eat and criticize if it is bad and it is the chef's job to make good food because we are the consumers and giving money. Idhuvum adhe concept dhan. Orutharuku film knowledge irundhu criticize panradhunala avare padam eduka mudiyum nu sola mudiyadhu at the same time criticize panadha nu sola mudiyadhu because he's the one giving away his time and money for that movie and has every right to criticize that movie 🤷

Uhh!!! I was pleased with this movie for a superstar movie with some sensible message and I laud the director for choosing right actors for the roles including villain male and female also.. Concept wise 2 splits one on encounter angle and the other on online fake coaching. .. The former plot leading to latter plot...an investiagtive thriller with thalaivar prime this movie moves at good pace without unnecessary gimmicks... Some are really thoughtful characters like that of the core teacher , bachchan SAAB but huge disappointment in wasting FAHAD FAZIL and he was made more a comedian without much stress or importance to his role... Screenplay for such story could be more interesting as second half latter plot looked too rushed which made villain impact as more dummy than strong ... Overall a good watch of a thalaivar movie rather than focussed ONLY around him also gave a plot more importance ...

It is a better movie than the other periya hero shits released this year.. FAFA was excellent, Amitabh 's presence was required there but could have been better replaced by Mamooka. Predictable but a good story. Commercial aspects culd have been shaped better to blend in with the story.

Watched the movie today. It did not really work for me. The issues raised in the movie are important but it should not be given a mass treatment. It should have been treated like Jai Bhim. Action set pieces are forgettable.

The unfortunate truth is that when they are treated like Jai Bheem (which i liked), the reach and audience drastically reduce as well. Using the star power of Rajini allows you to deliver your social message to a wider audience, a message our entire society can strive to be for the better.

You are the only reviewer who says that Jai bhim has melodrama. All these movie reviews but still can’t make out between drama and melodrama. In reality it would’ve been worse than what we see in the movie. And yes suriya character was a monotonous savior but this is not a character study of justice Chandru so getting into his life instead of rajakannu would’ve not helped the movie. And he does take help from Prakash Raj if you have seen the movie properly The investigation scenes 😊

End of the story the movie engaging me or not? No it’s not. This type of story we already watched in Thuppaki Munai, Tharkappu, and in kerala movie Jana Gana Mana. Same old template. It’s very cringe for us movie goers to repeat watch the same story

Won't agree that amitabh was miscast. Yes maybe we could have got more info about his charcter but to school rajni about an opposing ideology,you need to have someone superior to thalaivar. Offscreen persona also matters and I felt it should have been amitabh only. I also felt manju was wasted,atleast thalaivar should have had an emotional scene with manju on how his encounter went wrong. It was a bummer to see manju not getting a solid role. If BR is telling that vettayan had taken such a theme with a star in hand and executed decently,I wish he sees Kaththi again and reviews it once again. Kaththi had everything from message to commercial fan service yet leaving an emotional attachment with fans with a solid vijay na film.

Tamil cinema needs to break free from the same cop hero story. Every vijay movie apart from the Lokesh Kanagaraj directed movies are the same, rajini is the same. Ajith seems to have broken free from it and it has benefited him in showing his versatile acting

When the punch dialogue proved fatally wrong once, then why should it be repeated by the hero .. For this story narration even Siva Karthikeyan is enough .. not Rajni .. and Amitabh's role could have been handled by Jayaprakash or equivalent .. as usual corporate CEO is villain who also fights well with a trained senior Police SP ... as usual there is a black sheep in police top rank .. lagging funeral scenes ... lagging forced fights ...mispositioning of songs including manasilayo. ... same old NEET issue .... what else is required to spoil a film ... Only solace is Fahad Fazil who has done well .... Same old social media messages, same old public agitations ... Sedate screen play .. Thanks to Gnavel for mishandling 2 super stars of Indian cinema in one movie, with a story told 100 times, in Tamil cinema ... Big Disappointment to Rajni fans .. Gnavel being a formal journalist may get support from reviewers, but that would not be sufficient to save the film ... Eye opener for big heroes not to venture out with amateur directors .... In the absence of a horrifying villain Vettaiyan is not a jailor. .. it may just be another kala or linga .... Surprised to see a biased review of BR ... Who knows what pressure he got and from whom ..

my only gripe is I took my kids to theatre as they are Rajni fans, there are few violent scenes.. and the same footage kept coming 5 or 6 times over and over again. not so good to watch with kids.

Movie was good. Rajni , fahad, anirudh and pretty much the entire cast do a great job moving the movie forward. Biggest negative is tj gnanavels cringe and confused propaganda. He couldn’t decide if he wanted to make the movie about proliferation of drugs in Tamil Nadu, the moral dilemma in encounters, his perceived lack of equity in education system, or corporate coaching centers and their exploitation. Disastrous director.
