All good info and a great practical demo. BUT! The suggestion for determining the power required may prove to be inadequate fo a sail boat. Imagine the scenario where you are taking shelter in an anchorage from very strong winds. You are securely anchored and wind is whipping the surface off the water and is howling through the rigging, the angle shifts around due to the land form ashore. Your anchor monitor shows you are not moving and you are satisfied you having good holding and you are safe. Until through the spray you notice the large charter catamaran closer to shore directly upwind is no longer head to wind, is it dragging anchor and moving toward you? What do you do? 1. You optioned for a motor just powerful enough to just about achieve hull speed and after turning the motor on and applying full power you realise that in this strength of wind the forces against the rigging are too great to motor up, retrieve your anchor, move out of the way and re-anchor so you stay put hoping the catamaran will somehow miss you 2. You opted to install a motor closer to the power recommendations of your boat’s designer, you also installed a battery pack that allows full power running for at least 45 minutes and a 48v genset that enables half motor power for as long as the fuel lasts. You turn the motor on and push the throttle lever forward and as you get to about 3/4 power you sense the boat easing forward. Immediately you start the generator to extend range. As you steer into the wind easing the strain on the anchor you begin retrieving it until it is up then veer away before turning back upwind. The catamaran, side to the wind and chop surges past right where you where only minutes earlier. Another twenty minutes later you have manoeuvred back upwind, a little closer in and again deployed your anchor. While at times you used full power you didn’t come close to hull speed let alone any faster. I believe suppliers need to verify your potential usage requirements and make recommendations accordingly. And boat owners should consider their potential usage requirements and select options to suit.

Very well presented !!

You should design a system that connects your propeller systems to the outgoing storm water pipes that are always below water line, in places like Miami Beach, where tidal water flows back into to storm drain system.

This is fine as long as you have a diesel generator for long term power solution. Batteries are for short time applications when batteries can be charged overnight. Diesel is the only solution.

You are a winner if you make it stearable.

If you add two pods an all electric can do reverse so that makes the holistic system not just steerable but *"controllable"* (able to "spot lock".) Having a manual tiller would be nice tho absolutely.

Interesting , Thank You . I think that electric boats have the same problem as electric cars, or any thing electric, RANGE and where does the power come from. As to how much power do you need , I worked on a 42 ft. fishing boat . the engine was a Detroit v671 that I believe had about 100 Hp. , cruising was about 8? knots, the mass was about 45-80? tons depending on fuel and fish load. As a point we did tow a 145 ft. Purse Seaner 120 miles , it did take 38 hrs. The boats mass was about 800 tons . Sadly we were towing the Last active Purse Seiner operating out of San Diego to San Pedro so they could unload. I do hope that you're system works . I can see where combined with solar panels and a small engine cruising could be more affordable and enjoyable . At least you have a place to start . Thank You , happy cruising

@@jjw5165 Good idea, as long as the sun shines. another problem is that batteries are heavy . in all fairness engines and fuel are too. Still an interesting concept , there are some interesting ideas out there

Ditch the engine only to use a generator. Smoke and mirrors. Although the more room the electric motor provides is nice.

I see you have lead acid batteries . Why not lithium batteries? You get far more discharge cycles with lithium.

VETUS. has currently an 11 KW motor as their bigger unit which probably be our bigest currently dedicated to the small craft market. We know that our research and Develop department is currently working on bigger propulsion motors. We will bring your question to them and get back to you as soon as we get a reply. Thank you for the interest in our products. If we could get some particulars of your boat Like : Total dead weight, beam and Breadth what kind of propulsion does the boat currently have? fuel and power.
