How to fix your boats gearbox which is stuck in reverse by yourself.

The gearbox, or reversing gear of a boat is usually a very reliable bit of kit. But if it malfunctions you can't move your boat anymore. In this video we will show you how a gearbox works and how to fix a gearbox which is stuck in forward or reverse gear.
We will also answer the question why a gearbox should be in the reverse position while sailing.

lf, after using the reverse-gear unit for a long time, shifting (from forward speed to neutral or from reverse speed to neutral) becomes particularly difficult, it is advisable first to check the status of the control cable and of its relevant box. Then, if necessary, unlock the nut ref. 57 (spanner 13) and mantein the screw ref. 28 in its position with an allen wrench (4 mm.). Than rotate clockwise the screw ref. 28 by a 1/4 of turn and lock the nut ref. 57. lf one or both clutches slip,

very well explained...a topic which is not covered enough!...i wish to know...in the case of the Mechanical gearbox...say the cable snaps...as has happened with my throttle cable...can one manually shift it in gear and will the lever stay in that position? ---Cheers Edw

Hi Ziggy, thanks for the kind words. As far as I know the friction material cannot be renewed. The bonding between the conus and the material needs to be perfect + resistant to the oils used. The exact compound of the material is a bit of a company secret. When you have to get the boat moving, typically it's possible to rotate the conus 180 degrees as usually only the forward material is worn.

Mike, thanks for watching. When the cone (sliding middlepart) is stuck in itś counterpart no'thing is broken, it iser just pushed in there with too much force. To get it unstuck, you rotate the propellershaft. So it's not really a "fix", itś more a matter of putting the parts back in the position the manufacturer wanted them to be. There can be other reasons for a gearbox to appear stuck, caused by the control cablesiff, . If the control cables get stif, don use oil as the plastic inner surface can swell. You can try PTFE spray, but usually replacement is best since you can't remove the worn surface.

If the gearbox is stuck in gear as you described above, the prop shaft is already rotating. How does one disengage the prop shaft? At the moment this is my issue: Frequently, when shifting from either forward or reverse into neutral, the lever moves smoothly to neutral position but the prop shaft doesn’t disengage. By nudging the lever past neutral I can usually disengage the clutch cone from the gears but not always. Is there a way to facilitate a smooth, complete, reliable disengagement from the gear?

Good demonstration of how a reversing gear works, but not really a "how to fix". The only "how to fix" they offer is to turn your prop shaft by hand. In the real world, that doesn't always, in fact I'd say rarely works, especially if there's a serious problem. They don't go anywhere near all of the other problems there could be, nor show real examples. Hence, I'd say, a little misleading title. I'll send you a totally siezed gearbox to try doing the same with!
