Vex Tower Takeover Wallbot Reveal and Custom Linear Slides

So, in the seven-ish hours before leaving for a Vex tournament, we decided to build a wallbot out of an experimental scissor-lift robot. We originally used Vex slides, but the leverage on them ended up causing the robot to split in half, so we had to come up with another solution. We could have used inside slides on both stages, but we did not have enough slides to build it that way. We tried looping zipties around the slides, but that only worked for a couple of the slides, and they tended to slip off of the slides and cease to help.
So we decided to go with another solution. Our solution was something we've been doing for quite some time, and I think it turned out rather well.

I made a pull apart wallbot back in gateway. Same approach you took here except with the older linear slides. It actually worked really well.

Hey, thanks! I try to make them as easy to follow as I can. Coming into Vex I really had to teach myself, so I try to make my content easy to understand and help those who don’t have a mentor grow into great builders and competitors.

When you drive forward the way you end up moving forward is because both sides end up fighting against each other moving all the force foward, so there is nothing you can do about that

*remember how wallbots are legal for tower takeover?* Anyway, we had to build a super simple clawbot in a week. We didn't get time to even program autonomous. We pulled through in a few matches with some stackers. We put cubes in the towers, and they stacked. Other clawbots with us didn't work well. But it was very fun!

I am extremely interested in buying a vex kit, what do you recommend?
@KeplerElectronics
@KeplerElectronics 4 жыл бұрын
Vex is relatively expensive, and it really depends on what you want... I would say that you should just buy the barebones V5 kit, and some structural components. I would purchase screws from another source, but standoffs from Vex are great. Purchase a number of axles and spacers, and that’s basically it.

Not sure if you saw the NorCal RI3D, we made the stupidest wallbot possible. I'd say the best approach to this is make the massive deploy scissor as we did that is immovable once deployed because of its weight and length, but don't use an omnidirectional drive to deploy it. Our scissor could've been deployed by a conventional robot using a pin release passively linked to another system, and with a tether you get the best of both worlds so to speak, both a wall and a robot that can actively push.

I'm not entirely sure, but I do FRC rather than vex and all of these vex robots seem a lot smaller and less complex.
@KeplerElectronics
@KeplerElectronics 4 жыл бұрын
Vex is a lot more limited. You are limited to an 18” by 18” by 18” cube, and you have to use only approved materials (usually made by Vex, but not always). It has a few nice things, they are smaller, so most teams can afford to and have space for a field, and it levels the playing field a bit more, you don’t get quite the variance in robot cost like FRC.

why did you not just put the scissor on the drive
@KeplerElectronics
@KeplerElectronics 4 жыл бұрын
Two reasons. The scissor wings were a bit of an afterthought, and also, it would make the robot even harder to drive if each side of drive was that far out. Not to mention that the scissor would have a lot of sag between the sides of drive...
