I am in college and have just begun my Music Appreciation course. Our first online assignment is an article on Gregorian chants and it's gradual absence from the church over the decades that have passed. I must say, I used to be afraid, when I was younger, to listen to it because I didn't understand what was being said; frankly, I thought it sound weird and scary. However, now, as an adult, listening to this almost brought me to tears as I read the translation on the side. I see why this was considered one of the highest forms of worship. The voice in this recording is absolutely beautiful, and to know that he's praising our Almighty Jesus for His sacrifice on the cross just makes it more touching; I have a new found appreciation for this style of worship.

Very beautiful comment. I was also first exposed to Gregorian chant in a Music Appreciation course. Later on I found out about a Latin Mass being offered near the campus and began attending. I grew up Evangelical Protestant, was non-practicing at the time, and found such a depth and beauty to this worship. More so God must have been really working through the music because I shortly became Catholic afterwards and resumed practicing Christianity- with a deeper faith than before. Thanks again for the great comment.

I am a convert to the Traditional Catholic Faith as well. Rest assured that dedicated faithful are keeping the Traditions of the Faith (including Sacred chant) and the True Mass that God may be Worshipped in Spirit and in Truth until He return. I will add a link for more Sacred music. God bless you!!

As an atheist, I was very lucky finding and attending during university not a regular course but a Gregorian Laboratory, in which we learned singing Gregorian monodies as a choir, and at the end we even performed during a Latin Mass (there's a small pre-Vatican Ii church at the center of my town where mass is held in Latin with all the apparatus and the rite as it was before the 70's). The teacher was amazing, it's been one of the best experiences of my life, and still nowadays after more than 15 years I can follow the notation and sing along with a video like this, and Latin Mass is a real spectacle, nothing to do with lay-like nowadays vulgar ritual

Vexilla Regis, The Royal Banner forward goes The Royal Banner forward goes, The mystic Cross refulgent glows: Where He, in Flesh, flesh who made, Upon the Tree of pain is laid. Behold! The nails with anguish fierce, His outstretched arms and vitals pierce: Here our redemption to obtain, The Mighty Sacrifice is slain. Here the fell spear his wounded side With ruthless onset opened wide: To wash us in that cleansing flood, Thence mingled Water flowed, and Blood. Fulfilled is all that David told In true prophetic song, of old: Unto the nations, lo! saith he, Our God hath reignèd from the Tree. O Tree! In radiant beauty bright! With regal purple meetly dight! Thou chosen stem! divinely graced, Which hath those Holy Limbs embraced! How blest thine arms, beyond compare, Which Earth’s Eternal Ransom bare! That Balance where His Body laid, The spoil of vanquished Hell outweighed. O Cross! all hail! sole hope, abide With us now in this Passion-tide: New grace in pious hearts implant, And pardon to the guilty grant! Hail wondrous Altar! Victim hail! Thy Glorious Passion shall avail! Where death Life’s very Self endured, Yet life by that same Death secured. Thee, mighty Trinity! One God! Let every living creature laud; Whom by the Cross Thou dost deliver, O guide and govern now and ever! Amen. Translation from “The Psalter of Sarum”: London 1852. Tonight we sang this hymn, in translation of course. The hymn “Vexilla Regis” was composed by Saint Venantius Fortunatus (530-609) and considered by many to be one of the greatest of the sacred Liturgy. “Vexilla Regis” was composed for the reception of a Relic of the True Cross by Queen Radegunda for her monastery church at near Poitiers, France. A processional hymn “Vexilla Regis” is sung when the Blessed Sacrament is taken from the repository to the altar on Good Friday. It is the proper Vespers hymn sung from Passion Sunday to Holy Thursday and on the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. The Church sings it at Vespers from the First Vespers of the 5th Sunday of Lent until the Wednesday of Holy Week.

Absolutely beautiful, as always! There is something both supremely satisfying and utterly comforting about beautiful chant, especially Latin chant, sung in the gregorian style.

Well, not just for the "traditional" latin mass. We can also use it for the restored roman liturgy.

Not! The Novus Ordo is a destruction/deconstruct of the True Mass. I think you meant the dumbing down liturgy rather than “restored”. Restored?? What about the Holy Mass and Sacred Liturgy would need restored? That is akin to saying the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived in sin, a lie. And why do you put Tradition in quotes? So as to mock it? Which is to mock Saint Paul, Holy Scripture, the Church, and Jesus Himself.
