Yes and no. There've always been juggle combos in VF, but fairly subdued compared to other 3D fighters. Then this particular iteration of the series basically tripled the length of juggles, presumably because big combos were the "in" thing at the time. (It's actually a bit more complicated - this game is actually a remaster of the one that did it.) Big combos are also basically free money at the arcade, as players will keep inserting coins just to explore the combo system alone. You're still correct in that VF is about as grounded as fighting games get, and even if you can't stand the silly combos of this one, I highly recommend the other games in the series. 2 and 4 especially are legendary and a treat to look at, precisely because juggles are relatively few and far between and the interaction between players is nearly constant. (As a bonus, the series' female characters aren't literal fetish porn. But that's a story for another time.)

Netcode aside (though it's the best netplay for a delay-based game and the best among all 3D fighters, IMO) I firmly believe that Virtua Fighter is the best fighting game. Especially when compared to everything that has released over the last decade or so. The gameplay is so well-designed. Its not designed with strong offense and weak defense, nor a mountain of universal mechanics in a poor attempt to offset universally powerful offense. Each character has a massive amount of versatility and room for player expression but, despite the immense depth, the game is also one of the most approachable fighting games ever and one of the very few that can be learned/improved at intuitively. Even with Guilty Gear Strive out, I'm enjoying VF5US more. I don't get nearly as frustrated nor do I feel as drained after playing a 2-3 hour session. I'll be supporting VF wholeheartedly and I really hope that there will be a VF6 in which they figure out how to successfully implement rollback netcode. A quick reminder: No fighting game dev team has figured out how to properly implement rollback. Rollback was designed for 2D fighters, using no 3D fighters during the designing and testing. So, it is factually more difficult and more work + funds to figure out how implement into games like Tekken, SoulCal, DoA, and VF. That means we should be patient on that front and we should be understanding, if a 3D fighter releases without rollback (VF5US) or not implemented right (Tekken 7).
@nybxcrotona3 жыл бұрын
I don't recall if Skullgirls was rollback-based or not. However, I recall hearing MvC:I and KI having rollback. I think US-based studios are aware of this and can utilize it, and Japanese companies are still trying to figure it out.
@s_factor_sam3 жыл бұрын
@@nybxcrotona Skullgirls is built on GGPO rollback but, again, it's a 2D fighter and rollback was designed in the West using 2D fighters. So, these Western indie fighting game developers (who pretty much never make 3D fighters I'm the vein of Tekken, SoulCal, VF, or DoA) have been able to figure out how to implement it on small budgets. Japanese culture is very much "If we didn't make it, we don't use it." and so resistant to change/risk-taking that companies over there would still hesitate to make big changes even if they're hemmoraging money. So, it's no surprise that convincing Japanese devs to stop using familiar delay-based netcode is extremely difficult. Especially since the outcry and need for rollback lies outside of Japan. And every time rollback is done wrong by a Japanese dev, like in SFV and Tekken 7, it delays the process of Japanese devs adopting rollback as the new standard.
@nybxcrotona3 жыл бұрын
@@s_factor_sam I recall Max and/or Sajam mentioning what you said. But it really comes down to these Japanese companies being able to implement it properly, and I believe they have the resources and time to do so, given they're the biggest games in the community. The biggest Western fighters that exist at this time to my knowledge are NRS games, which at most comprises of 3 titles at the moment (MKX and MK11, and Injustice 2).
@s_factor_sam3 жыл бұрын
@@nybxcrotona Yep. And with how much trouble all the Japanese devs who have tried have had, besides ArcSys and Arika, it's gonna take a bit. And that's been all 2D fighters, except Tekken 7 (which clearly didn't do it right). 3D fighters like Tekken, DoA, VF, and SoulCal still require even more work since peer-to-peer rollback netcode was designed for 2D fighters.

just a random factoid: the scene from the 1st ghost in the shell anime where motoko beats up the machine gun dude in the "open water lot" behind the building complexes is inspired by virtual fighter. in the behind the scenes of the anime one of the animators mentioned that he used to play the virtual fighter arcade on his lunch breaks, and he based motoko's moves in that scene from how they fight in the game. i can see the influence like when motoko delivers that last kick, and it quick cuts to that same kick from a wider angle. imo it's reminiscent of the instant replay in virtual fighter. the sound effects of her punches, the way the guy falls back twisting in the air and everything.

VF has always been my favorite fighting game since I was about 6 years old. This is bringing back so much nostalgia❤️ I wish Dural had a showcase too…

I would love to see a new animated series with fight scenes like this. Just focus on the tournament mostly and draw some inspirations from martial arts films like Blood Sport and other good films that does martial art tournaments.

You know when a game is good when Desk post an awesome video and DSP ragequit it on the same day.

This is too sick. As a Tekken purist, you vf players are family. all of you vf players are welcome over to play some games anytime ✌️I won't even make you use the broken controller ❤️ Also how do I do the throw at 2:51😂

VF5 is definitely more of a fighting game than Tekken and DOA, that is for certain. And thank God for that.

My favorite 3D fighter ever. It used to be Tekken but imo it's been going in the wrong direction since Tekken 3. In VF I've had fights with my brother that actually look like they could be in a martial arts film.

It's a throw video only. Except, throws in this game give more strikes for most characters. Pretty cool

Out of all fighting games this has the MOST BEAUTIFUL move set. It truly Is a martial arts game

The old sound effects are intentional, they are "bad" like the ones used in old Kung Fu movies of the 70's and it allowed SEGA to re-use them from games to games too, VF as a series is great, we need the return of solo player mode like Kumite/quest to buff the game content, i'm confident we will get a VF6 down the road due to the game success, the connection isn't bad but Rollback netcode this isn't, it's very hard to find good connections if you're not from Asia or USA...

The sound effects are fine what's weird is that VF5US has worse sound quality compared to VF4Evo which is on PS2.
