i mean, if you are interested in a 'real tournament' type of game, I'd reccomend Fighter's Destiny 1 and 2 for the Nintendo 64, and it's arcade 'sequel', toy fighter. hollowshy has a video on the first game. what makes Fighter's Destiny special is that throwdowns are worth 2 points.

I love how VF has a lot of "realism" or is very faithful to representing these fighting styles. Or it gives you a sort of hyperidealized version of fighting styles. And then its not afraid to have icons of wiggling joysticks. Its not afraid of being an arcade or video game.

What makes it different from everything else you have seen and heard of all the years. I never played VF before, but now i’m hyped. I like SF6 and Tekken 8 too, but i got burnt out because of the new mechanics they introduced. I just want to throw hands without supers that take vast majority of our health because we pushed a single button when the opponent moved his toe and didn’t block for 0.1 second. Well, this is mostly a Tekken issue with the insane heat and rage art damage, SF supers are not nearly as bad, but still.

When virtua fighter five came out on 360, I remember thinking it looked so amazing. Just water effects, skin and character models. Graphics are always improving in quantum leaps. There's stuff from when the the Xbox one first came out that looks completely different from a game released two or three years later. Anyways, VF Five still looks amazing.
@Argroh
@Argroh Ай бұрын
VF5FS, also for 360, is just a smidge better. Though, DLC locks a certain mode behind a smidge of a paywall, but if you have a madern Xbox (a One or a Series), you can still grab it. VF5US (the game shown in the video), is only on PS4 and PS5, and it's... ...arguably, outside of the UI changes, pretty much the same thing. That and also VF5FS is also found in pretty much every current Yakuza game (6-onward, yes, even Judgement.) So it's quite easy to get at the game. for the aforementioned Yakuza games, you just have to reach the point where you have access to the arcade. (also a certain trainer can be used to pretty much play the base 360 version of VF5FS, sans online and DLC) Hells, SEGA Still have the big elaborate how to play video tutorials still on YT for VF5FS. Making it that bit easier to learn. And if you want VF with a bit more... "Pizzaz", there's Dead or Alive by Tecmo-Koei for that. (same 3-button system, attacks have chains, and the guard button can be used for "Holds" which counter attacks.) Hells, in the 5th game of the series, there's even Virtua Fighter characters as guest characters! (Akira, Sarah, Pai-chan, and Jacky.) But yeah, Virtua Fighter has quite the legacy to it.

One thing I'm curious about is what they'll do with the aesthetic. So, RGG Studio is working on it, so maybe it's just gonna have Yakuza's photorealistic art style, but one thing I've noticed in recent times is that, whether due to people looking at ASW's output or just people wanting to one-up themselves, all the new big fighting games are trying real hard to have a distinctive aesthetic that nails what they want their game to be "about." Like Guilty Gear of course is going in hard on ASW's patented anime in 3D witchcraft, Capcom finally decided to make Street Fighter feel more like Fighting In The Streets with the paint flourishes and soundtrack, City of the Wolves is going in with a bright comic book aesthetic (possibly to enforce a more American feel for the mean streets of Southtown?), Tekken 8 keeps up with those character-specific hitsparks to give everyone a definitive This Is Who Hit You thing, etc. What, if anything, would they do to have people look at VF6 and think immediately "Oh, yeah, this is Virtua Fighter," if you get what I mean? It'd be interesting if they punctuated counterhits by having wireframes show up like this is a simulation and it just can't handle how awesome you are in that moment, or maybe they would keep on with their understated style now because being grounded and unassumingly elegant really is Virtua Fighter. Regardless, I'm looking forward to it.

Personally I’d want them to just stay true to the straight forward competitive martial arts vibe the series has always gone for. That said, I get that it might not be the most marketable, so I also think an old school Hong Kong martial arts movie presentation could work as well (film grain, title cards, sound effects, camera angles, and other such things taken from those movies). If Dead or Alive was still an active series, I might’ve said that’s a better fit for that series, but since it’s more dead than alive nowadays, I’d say it could work as a fresh coat of paint for VF instead, and allow it to still keep a bit of that competitive martial arts presentation, just with a bit more flair. If Yu Suzuki was still heading the series, it actually feels like something he’d do, so if any change were to happen I think this is one that’s make sense while still feeling like VF.

I'm hoping for classic "SEGA aesthetics" if that makes sense. The trailer of the new VF5 version kinda had vibes like that. I think that vibe could work and it would certainly give the game an identity of its own when compared to other fighters.

What i love about vf is how each of its characters is completely unique gameplan & mechanics wise like take shun di, lei fei and vanessa for example, they all use stances, but shun's gameplan is much more about getting those drinks in, while lei fei is about flowing from one into the other while mixing you up to hell (kinda like lei wulong), while vanessa is about switching back and forth from aggression and defense

Yeah: 1. DOA, 2. Tekken and 3. VF (all 3 games are good, but have different strengths and weaknesses. Tekken has the best system that every button is a limb, and interesting characters and lore. but juggling and that the possibility that you cant do anything against your opponent and just have to look your character got juggled around (or kings chain throws) and get destroyed etc (unfair gameplay) makes it bad. VF is grounded and in a way the most impressive in realism fighting but in my opinion some mechanics like Guarding with button is outdated. The Tekken approach is kind of better. And sadly VF has no real content and offers only the basic fighting experience (no story etc) And also some character designs are really cool or unique but other ones are a bit too boring or not so great. DOA on the other hand brings all the good things together. Its technically fair, easy (you dont have to main a character because you can easily play everyone) was since DOA2 the most advanced and most impressive game (where tekken sometimes still lacks behind) and also have done a good job with presenting the story etc…The only downside maybe is that its the one less complex and less competitive game (because Tekkens 4button system is more unipue and most addicting) i would say DOA is the perfect game for casual players. But overall DOA has the most strengths and the less weaknesses what makes it number one.

VF2 on the Sega Saturn was waaaaaaaay ahead of its time! Grounded combat, no powerups or flashy effects made it so realistic. And the 60 FPS at that time was mind blowing! But my favorite has to be DOA especially DOA5 featuring some of the VF characters and the ever so captivating Mai Shiranui from the KOF series. ❤

Thanks for making this video! As a long time fan of the series and someone always trying to think of the best way to explain Virtua Fighter to someone new to the series, what do I think Virtua Fighter is all about? Virtua Fighter is a speed guessing game. A round on average takes 20 seconds, but can end as quickly as 5 seconds! All characters in the game share a subset of moves that is fundamental for play, but because of the large move set it allows players to express themselves differently from other players. Not just by playing different characters, but playing the same character differently. Also I think you can successfully play the game with a very defensive mindset...maybe a better way to say it...playing an active defense versus a passive defense.

For all those of you born post 1990 who aren't too familiar with Virtua Fighter, you missed out ROYALLY on these games dropping for the first time, moreso I'm referring to the first three in the series. What you have to understand is, SEGA at this time had access to NASA esque technology nobody else did, not even in the PC space, so when these games dropped, they were absolutely groundbreaking. Never before had we seen tech at this level and you just knew you were going to be years away from seeing anything remotely as good in your home. This was peak Sega for me, at one point I was almost living in arcades, every spare moment I got I headed to ones which I knew had the Sega goodness. Even if you look at Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown now, it has aged only a little bit visually, it's not exactly looking blown out of the water old, it's still holding up pretty well, which is testament to Sega's work. The game is 20 years old, it has no right still looking that good now. What is crazy to me, is that there's been 8 Tekkens and only 5 Virtua Fighters, when Virtua Fighter came first and hasn't been produced again in 20 years. If Sega go back to their roots and deliver a similar level of technological advancement with VF6, they could literally have a fighting game that can't be surpassed for at least another 3-4 years and only by Sega themselves. It's all on them, but I'm not sure they have the same artists and creative minds there anymore.

Honestly we need another 3D fighter. Tekken has become a weird amalgamated chimeric beast at this point. Feels like Dead or Alive title without a balanced triangle Hold system to keep the hyperaggressive long combos in check.

sega is far from the giant they were back then. probably hard for them to justify a new VF game until now, they were probably waiting for the fgc to pop back off again like it is now. can't blame em really. and you're 100% right about VF being the peak when it came out in arcades, my jaw hit the floor first time my arcade got a cabinet. i remember freaking out the first time i changed views when i got virua racing on the genesis lol.

@@davidscott9257 Yeah that's the worry, as I said. AM2/AM3 as we knew it gone a long time ago. That Genesis Virtua Racing was a really good conversion for what it was, but VF2 you just knew wasn't going to be possible in the home for a while, a bridge too far.

@@chillbro2275 Virtua Fighter 3 is my all time favourite one, I still get goosebumps playing it now, although the gameplay hasn't aged well at all compared to the latter ones now, so difficult to enjoy as a fighter when you're trying things that wasn't there yet! Hasn't aged as well visually, but actually, it still looks respectable, particularly when you look at the graphical features like the eye tracking. It was geekgasm central back then, absolutely ridiculous looking, I didn't think Virtua Fighter 2 was going to be topped for a LONG TIME, but...... Still also has one of the best in-game soundtracks of all time. VF perfection as an overall package, but VF5 FS was the best technically from a gameplay standpoint, just fell short in the presentation and music department for me.

Virtua Fighter is probably the most “grounded” fighting game in terms of its characters. Sure you have Dural whose a robot, but for the most part it’s just “muay thai guy” or “jeet kune do guy” I hope VF6 continues that, although I do think Sega will try and tap into the craziness that Tekken has and add like “just a penguin” or something. And any guest character (which you all KNOW will happen) will probably be pretty wild too, whether it’s knife wielding Mad Dog Goro Majima, Devil Gene infused Kazuya Mishima or Power Dunking Terry Bogard… When they do a guest I hope it’s someone decently normal like Heihachi or Ryo Hazuki or Kiryu (even if that last one is unlikely)

I’m sorry to inform you, but VF has probably the biggest disparity between high and low level of any fighting game series. It’s why it got its reputation as being the most complex fighting game out there. Not because it’s actually complex (it’s incredibly straightforward and easy to pick up, especially in its inputs), but the almost infinite amount unique situations and matchup specific interactions that are possible means it’s Knowledge Check: The Game, and so veteran players will always outplay a beginner.
@WhatisaLee
@WhatisaLee Ай бұрын
@@CrossfacePanda I disagree. VF revolves around its system more than most other fighters. Arguably, its strongest inputs are shared amongst all characters: P, 2P, 6P, G, and throw. If you know the triangles like attack > throw > guard > attack > etc., you know most of the game. If you know that P is +2 on block, then 6P or throw to follow, you know the fundamental neutral and can deduce the rest regardless of what character you choose and who you're fighting against. Anything character-specific has more to do with frames and is not as important as understanding the flow above. And even then, there are only several recovery frames to remember: safe, throw-punishable, P-punishable, and launch-punishable. And those are universal too. Characters are more often differentiated by their access to the system, rather than unique interactions between characters. For example, Akira has no full circulars; Eileen has weak throws; Kage has strong ring out potential; etc. The only character-specific info that might be important to a beginner are juggles. But even those are more generally bucketed into 3 weight classes (save for Taka who exists in his own weight class) and foot stances can be ignored for a while.

Something I always liked about Virtua Fighter is how strong mechanical character identity is. Very character has something that's very uniquely "theirs". Jean having only when blocked effects, Taka being un-jugglable, Brad's fast and furious strings, Kage's moon throw that I've seen get ring outs on tall fence stages etc. The general, "Always works" part like the sidestep system prevents the worst of tekken's died from backdraft type stuff. I've always found the button more logical as well. Kick with all your body weight? Always K+G. Body check or elbow type thing? P+K. Stance related? P+K+G. It's pretty consistent. More intuitive then tekken's limbs to me. Tekken might tell me what button a move is if I squint, but VF tends to tell me more what it's FOR. Less useless moves too.

There’s so many reasons why I love VF, but my absolute favourite reason is how much milage and depth they get out of just 3 buttons. Punch, Kick, Block. That’s all you need in different combinations for an immensly deep and diverse system and roster. Makes it quick to pick up and understand the basics, but with infinite room to learn and explore. And all the tools are available at all times, since the only resource to manage is your health (unless you play Shun Di). It’s imo both the most brilliant and elegant system a fighting game has ever had.
