Brings back some very special memories.... I was a VA15 plane captain (brown shirt) with A1 Skyraiders on the flight deck,( nights ) on CVA 42 USS FDR. 1960- 1965.

Good work VFA-15. Your bombs always hit their marks, almost 5 decades of strike capability (1968-2017). Thank you. Our CF-18s have missed their sisters, the F/A-18 since the Marines retired the A-D Hornets.

Great video! Looks like a lot of things changed since I worked on VF-21 F-4s. Three 8 month WESTPAC cruises on USS Ranger to Vietnam, 1968-71. 20-30 airplanes launched every hour and a half for 12 hours per day. Dropping lots of dumb bombs on the Ho Chi Minh trail, etc. We had an ammo unrep every 3 or 4 days to keep us supplied with bombs. Two carriers would operate together, one flew all night, the other all day for about 6 weeks. Then we went to Japan or the Phillipines for some liberty for about 5 days, then back to the war. We had F4s, A7s, A6s, A3s (for tankers), A5 Vigilantes for photo recon, E2s, and CODs, and a couple of helos. It looks a lot simpler now since F18s do it all now. The Ranger is dead and gone, and I don't think there's a VF21 any more. One thing we had was good liberty ports (Subic, Japan, and Hong Kong). I don't think liberty is so good in the Middle East.

Notice how easy it is to walk around the Hornets. They were a pleasure to work on and around. The F-14s and A-7s were very difficult to deal with up there. That Final-Checkin on the Cats footage brings back the memories. So now just imagine doing the Final Check at night with nothing but a red flashlight. Very tricky. I loved it. VFA-125 86-89.

I'm an old A-4 / A7 turd shirt. The nose of an A-7 is an intimidating mofo. Humid days they form a tornado down the intake that reaches the deck and dances around.I can't count how many clueless mofos I had to grab to keep them out of the intake.

What great memories this video brings back. Was a AD T/S for VA-46 Clansmen (A-7E's) back in the early to mid 80's. Worked the roof for 3 cruises, both day check and night check. Its amazing that when this video was made, not very much at all had changed as far as how the roof works.

In my day, something like a GoPro would have been the size of a suitcase and probably cost a few thousand dollars. :-) Nice to see that the job hasn't changed much. VA-72 Troubleshooter/Final Checker, 1981-83.

Funny that one safety officer didn't notice and/or have a problem with it, but one did, or did I mistake the one dude you were talking to, as a safety officer.
@bryanlawson6835 жыл бұрын
The safety officer (first guy) may have said something to the safety petty officer (second guy) instead of saying something himself. It could also be the petty officer is just an asshole who’s trying to make chief.

@1BergerVongSchlauigkeitHer6 жыл бұрын
It's not exactly public property.
@adamanderson30425 жыл бұрын
Why wouldn't you? Aircraft carriers are multi-billion dollar ships, if people didn't need special authorisation to record the enemy could learn vital information.
@adamanderson30425 жыл бұрын
War is the most chaotic thing imaginable so it makes sense that those who fight in it need to be the exact opposite of chaos. The military is incredibly disciplines, organised and has protocols and procedures for absolutely everything. Filming flight deck activity would be highly regulated.

I’m New York City and my first Navy vessel visit was OpSail 1976. The Navy would send an available carrier (no assigned Wing yet) for Fleet Week or July 4. Around that time, photographing the carrier hangar was prohibited, but a few years later, no restrictions. In 1991, the JFK made a port call with a full Wing with public visitors. I shot a couple rolls of 35mm and it was orgasmic for someone not near Norfolk or San Diego or Pearl. I could lay my hands on the TRIM turret on a A-6E and pull on the Tomcat hook. The JFK sailed to Boston and then to the Med leading to Dessert Storm 1, and didn’t return for another 9 months, 3 months longer than a standard cruise. I’m not White so walking around a CV was a thrill. When the CV fleet shrunk after the Forrestal ships were retiring, the Navy could only send a LHA for Fleet Week. A couple of times, the Russians sent a missile destroyer or cruiser to New York City. NY is actually a big maritime place. In October 2022, I saw 3 NATO frigates tied up to the adjacent pier to the Intrepid when I was visiting.
