There's one really important thing that wasn't mentioned about The Last Starfighter - there is no texture or normal mapping which is why they had so many polygons. To be clear texture mapped planets had been done for the Voyager mission CGI which predates this, but they didn't use it for the movie it was almost all flat shaded polygons, these days you would add lots of surface detail with an image mapped onto the surface, but they just had to keep adding polygons to get the detail. The Gunstar was the hero model so it had something like 300,000 polygons, and in one scene there's 10 of them in a hangar, which held the record for the most complex CGI scene rendered for a long time. They also developed some software to animate the engine exhausts automatically in response to the ship's motion, which saved them a lot of time.

Fun fact: The Last Starfighter CGI was rendered in resolution close to modern 5K to fill each grain on 35mm film. Each frame was rendered as 32bit image stored in RAM, it was imedietly photographed at film using camera and custom 5K monitor, and after that rendered image was deleted. They used this method since early 1970s

I think a huge part of all these older movies is almost every single one of the clips are super clean 1080-4k remasters seen on screens of the same resolution, but when they came out they were shown on old film reels, projected onto old screens in a theater, and WHEN they eventually made it to physical media, they were at best 360-480p on old crappy tube televisions or CRTs. Put a filter on some of these older movies and they sell WAAAAY better than they even look in full res. The nature of the film and lower resolution help "dirty" up even darken(increased contrast and saturation) shots that look way too bright and clean at full HD or higher!
@no1DdC18 күн бұрын
On one hand, yes, but on the other hand, they rendered The Last Starfighter at 3000x5000 and 36 bit color depth. They clearly went for maximum detail and sharpness, because there were at least some higher-end cinemas that could really show this hard work off.
@bryanwoods337318 күн бұрын
On a tangent, this is apparently why older games are difficult to upscale. CRTs had that honeycomb thing with the pixels that bleed across each other, so developers used that to blend colors and smooth lines as a direct practical effect to your eyes.
@vonnyrotten18 күн бұрын
@@no1DdC I think you misunderstand the point I was making. I was trying to point out that all of these older movies that are reviewed and "critiqued" were never seen in super high definition, nor intended to be. Regardless of The Last Starfighter facts you point out, 99% of the population would never have seen any of the older movies on anything better than 480p with poor color rendition and VHS grain, so all of those limitations aided just how good they looked back then. We get a lot of comments of "it doesn't hold up today" where I bet if you put the movie in a VCR and watched in on a period appropriate monitor, the effect would be way more impressive. Many monster/horror movies from the 70's-90's with SFX or VFX or CGI look way too clean and "bright" when seen on blu-ray, but on an old VHS or even DVD with like effectively 5 stops of dynamic range, the darks were so much darker and the limitations of CGI were helped by the lack of quality media. My whole point is that all these older clips looked even more impressive when they are watched how they were originally produced.

I’ve seen plenty of recent cgi jobs that are less realistic to me despite all their up-to-date lighting, textures etc… maybe because the animation (at least in the clips shown here) is so smooth, the performance is quite immersive regardless? But then, I also think that super realistic cgi might be cool but it’s somewhat overrated. If you’ve engaged your audience in your performance/story, their imagination will do a lot to fill in the blanks. The cgi just needs to be good enough to serve its purpose. I’m not sure how much other people would agree with me on that.

The other thing that REALLY helps sell the effects in Last Starfighter is the plot point that the main character is playing a video game which was then revealed to be a recruiting tool from another dimension - the ships and effects in that dimension looked exactly like the video game we the viewer had already bought into earlier. I believe it as a video game and now I believe it as another dimension.
@suntanironman18 күн бұрын
In another dimension?! How many are left?! Including yourself? Yeah! One! One?!
@DobieTanpaw17 күн бұрын
I've watched TLS dozens of times, and I don't ever recall them saying that it's occurring in another dimension. It's just happening many light years away from Earth, which is why Centauri uses "star drive" to get there, which is that movie's version of hyperspace/warp drive/lightspeed drive.
@seencapone16 күн бұрын
Back when this first came out, we speculated that the whole Starfighter savior story was going to turn out to be an escapist fantasy as imagined by the main character, but he couldn’t imagine it in a much more advanced way than the videogame he was addicted to playing to avoid the banality of his trailer park existence.
@suntanironman15 күн бұрын
@@DobieTanpaw You are correct. It didn’t take place in another dimension. The only mentions of another dimension was when Grig was talking about his concept of an afterlife. Grig prefers to think of the dead Starfighters “as battling evil in another dimension”. Grig also gives his equivalent of ‘rest in peace’ when he says to Centauri “Until the next dimension, old friend.”

The first fire effect is just far more "magical" feeling so while it may not have been as true to the words in the book I think it was much more true to the spirit of the world that was being created by the movies.

Interestingly, the ability to draw complex 3D models directly on a computer had existed since the 1950s (and since the 1960s commercially), but the problem was that you had to retrain a person with a high hourly wage for this, which is obviously not desirable. It was much cheaper and easier to have a trained artist use then pen and paper they were familiar with and then give an intern a crash course on how to digitize that drawing with a simple tool, which is why they did it like this.

Something to think about Last Starfighter: The images were rendered on a Cray YMP, the fastest, most powerful supercomputer of the time and it still took weeks to render all of the images for the film. Today we can render all of the frames, in real-time with better quality on a smartphone.

@@zeljkokuvara6145 You name it, pal. The tech-factor of movies is as high as could possibly be, while the content-factor is at an all-time low. Stories are bad and boring, characters are incredibly shallow, rehashes left and right and Hollywood being creatively bankrupt. Even those movies we still like, aren't really good. All the Sonic movies are a joy to watch, but when you really break it down, they are not very good movies. But I guess they work, because they simply aren't pretending to be the new bestest thing on the planet, that everybody needs to see. They are perfectly fine, dumb entertainment.

I've missed out on so many frame-long easter eggs on KZbin videos over the years and I'll never know what I'm missing because of my dumb slow fingers. Enjoy it while it lasts. Stick around for a minute or two even. You earned it."_ I played back the part to see what he said before the quick frame pop. Then I slowed down the frame rate 0.25×, waited for him to finish the sentence, and did quick taps. With a small pause each double tap (to unpause and pause again quickly) to make sure I didn't accidentally unpause when I got it. Use the time stamp above to practice if you want. It's like a save point.

The reason the cray at the time was built into a C shape was actually to minimize the length of the cross cabinets connections on the inside diameter. By building each section in a wedge shape they shortened cables by a few inches. This may not seem like something that was significant, but the cray systems were pushing bus speeds, power density, and voltage limits at the time. If they were to design the original units in a linear setup they would have to up power levels to the point where components would de soldier themselves and the EM levels would cause problems throughout the system. As the models advanced semiconductor technology and tolerances improved. Power requirements per chip lowered. So the later models just maintained the shape because it was distinctive. Eventually Cray systems went back to a conventional rack system.
