Project files available on Patreon | Learn how to composite EXR sequences from Maya and V-Ray in After Effects. This is the full-length version of the six-part series about compositing a plane using Maya, V-Ray, Photoshop, and After Effects. This tutorial has six parts and is aimed at users with intermediate Maya skills and beginner to intermediate After Effects skills. Learn how to reference geometry, set up cameras with a suitable focal length, use expressions to animate turbulence, and do basic keyframing. Next, we set up a dome light with an HDRI and create materials using V-Ray. Also, learn how to use the V-Ray frame buffer, create aircraft metal, glass, and create and apply reflection maps correctly. Procedural noise and fractal patterns are covered as well. After that, create a simple alternative to a particle system by using basic geometry and deformers driven with an expression. This gives us a matte to use in After Effects. Continuing, we discuss render layers, render passes (elements), how to create an ambient occlusion pass, and set up a Z Depth pass properly. Also, learn how to batch rendering efficiently with layer overrides. Finally, we head over to After Effects to start compositing the EXR sequence. Learn how to interpret footage, linearize the working space, use the EXtractoR effect, the unmultiply effect, use a LUT color correction file from V-Ray, and use curves and Lumetri Color. We also composite exhaust and heat distortion using the exhaust matte we made earlier. We composite depth of field and atmospheric perspective using a Z Depth pass. Also, learn how to create bloom in V-Ray and After Effects, camera shake, and add film grain. At the end, we render out a preview file using the Media Encoder.

This tutorial is unparalleled, an entire VFX workflow jam packed into one video. You could charge a lot for this course. Despite you using Maya, V-Ray and AE, many principles/theories/workflows used in this video can be transferred to any 3D software/post editor. Thank you! Gods work.

Note: If you're using the Personal Learning Edition (PLE) edition of V-Ray, you cannot batch render. Use the Render Sequence function or simply turn off "Render animation only in batch mode" in the common tab of Render Settings and render with the V-Ray frame buffer. Either way, you have to render each render layer in turn manually.

Using Maya 2022 and Vray 5, are you using meters or default cm? I ask because the measurement for the zdepth pass is 2300 instead of your 20. I only have white regardless of the value.
@CGStirk
@CGStirk 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think this is set up to scale, but it is in cm. Use the Measure Tool to get the distance from the camera to the plane. Use this number as a starting point for your z depth. With V-Ray 5, the background is white instead of black.

May I ask a question regarding the workflow from Maya to After Effect....so I wish to create a realistic jet engine exhaust for my jet model but I am not too sure about how to add it by using After Effect. Have tried to use fluid in Maya to create similar effect but the result was not satisfying and rendering the effect almost set my laptop on fire.....so I searched tutorial online and one of them uses AE to create the effect but instead of importing sequence from maya like you did in this video, he directly imported a jet model in AE and combined it with the exhuast effect....now I am just confused about where I should start with AE since I already rendered out a sequence for my jet model and created animation for it.
@CGStirk
@CGStirk 3 жыл бұрын
Importing a model into AE requires a plugin like Element 3D. Trapcode Particular is another plugin that you can use to make smoke trails, but both of these plugins together cost about $600. You can still use Trapcode with the Maya render without having to import an object, but if you're looking for a purely 3D approach, you should look at Maya Bifrost. If that takes too long, then the cheapest type of particle effects use sprites with a smoke texture. This is also faster if you don't need a physically accurate trail. You'd need to use expressions to allow the sprites to move and rotate, but they can be rendered with Maya Hardware in about one second per frame or less.

One of the best vfx channel, learned alot from it. If you don't mind I have some questions regarding maya to after effects workflow: 1. As a beginner im using arnold cpu render but for faster results (gpu render) should i learn and fully switch to vray? 2. Will there be dedicated videos for camera tracking and incorporating 3d objects with their animation in real life video? 3. And can you make vfx breakdown videos series like ignacealeya but with maya, Arnold, after effects workflow? Thank you so much for your help!
@CGStirk

Thank you very much! 1. Vray is great and it's very easy to use. I haven't used Arnold enough for a proper comparison, but it does have a bit of an odd material setup. That said, both Vray and Arnold have GPU rendering support, and they can produce beautiful results. Arnold also has cool volume conversions for shapes and displacement. 2. Maybe. I need interesting plates first. 3. Do you have a video I should take a look at as an example? I have a lot of video ideas, they just take forever to make haha. These videos tend to be the least popular too, sadly. Thanks again

@@CGStirk @CGStirk Thank you for your help! 1. Arnold gpu still in development and it doesn't support procedural shaders right now otherwise it produce great results in cpu render which cost more time. Im thinking to shift to vray what do you suggest should I make vray as my main render engine as beginner? Or stick to arnold which i learns almost in 6 months and still learning. 2. Im talking about like this kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5-rqmykgNCCn8k 3. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJyQaoJ5aMuiq8k this one of his breakdown video you can check his channel and trust me this type of short breakdown makes alot easier to understand and really enjoyable than full length tutorials( full length tutorials are also great but short videos engage more) Thanks again! @CGStirk

1. V-Ray's GPU renderer also doesn't have the same functionality as it's CPU renderer, but I know that Arnold's GPU implementation is still pretty new. Also, while V-Ray's GPU renderer is good, for many cases you won't see a major uplift in performance, and sometimes the GPU can be slower if you run out of VRAM. 2. V-Ray has a free PLE version, so you can try it out. My belief is that in most cases, stick to the renderer you know the best unless there's some serious limitation for your current needs. The only functional limitation that I know of is that you cannot batch render with the PLE. You can use the sequencer, though, or render the animation in the frame buffer. 3. Okay, that's pretty cool. I'm not sure what the best format is. Even on some of my long tutorials, I've got feedback saying they're too fast. We'll see. I've got some faster ones in the works briefly showcasing software (like the latest video). There's so much to do and so little time haha. I'm going to be releasing a video soonish on procedural geometry with Arnold stand-ins, so stay tuned for that

Not natively, but it might be possible with plugins. See Pixel Cloud or Position Matte 2, although the first one hasn't been updated for a few years and I'm not sure if the second one would do what you wanted. I've not done any world position pass compositing actually.

It’s a great work! May I know the recommended hardware requirement to produce this work?
@CGStirk
@CGStirk 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! This tutorial can be done with a relatively low end "production" PC. Generally speaking, it depends on what you want to focus on and how much time you're willing to wait. For example, if you want to do a lot of CPU-bound rendering, then the requirements are different than if you want to do a lot of compositing. I have specific requirements since I do a lot of 3D rendering and also a lot of After Effects work, and I hate delay. So, for me, a lot of CPU threads and RAM is important. As an okay medium-end production PC, I would suggest a Ryzen 3900X, 64 GB RAM, a 1 TB SSD, and a RTX 3000 series graphics card. To start learning, you can use low end hardware. It might just be slow. For simulations or 4K video, then RAM is a necessity and you might run into limitations where you can't do certain things.

Hi, Please can you make a tutorial on how to make Vray override such that certain objects` reflections can be seen on other objects whereby the object remain invisible
@CGStirk
@CGStirk 2 жыл бұрын
@Kofi Mochacho This is quite simple to do. In Maya, go to the polygon shape node in the Attribute editor, and go to Render Stats. Here there are options for this. To remove the object's visibility, turn off Primary Visibility. This applies to all renderers. For V-Ray specific changes, you can also change additional properties such as matte and alpha contribution by selecting the object, then going to the V-Ray menu tab at the top and adding a V-Ray Object Properties node. You can do the same thing with a V-ray Material Wrapper. Let me know if you still need help.

I'm trying to figure out how to achieve more or less the same thing with 3ds max, but max lacks a lot of vfx-centric features like render layers. State sets are close, but with V-Ray it's a pain. I'm working on a solution that doesn't require plugins

How would you go about doing the haze effect in Maya with Vray? I've seen Blender videos on it and tried to replicate it in Maya/Vray, but can't get a noise map to run the refraction ior so it changes. Can only get one value in ior. Search heat distortion blender from cg cookie if you want to find example. I hope you can help :)
@CGStirk
@CGStirk 3 жыл бұрын
So, when you add the noise node to the Refraction IOR, first make sure that Alpha is Luminance is turned on in the Color Balance tab. Then, animate the Time channel in Noise Attributes. You can set keys manually or right-click and create an expression. You can start with a simple time expression like this (don't include the quotes): " time * 50; "
@3rdpoly
@3rdpoly 3 жыл бұрын
@@CGStirkThank you that help :) So far so good. Now I have alpha values in IOR, but how do I remap it from 0 - 1 to 1 - 2?
@CGStirk
@CGStirk 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure I understand what you're asking. Refraction IOR maxes out at 1, so you can't remap it. You can change the Amplitude of the Noise map, though. Are you asking about how to animate the Time?
@3rdpoly
@3rdpoly 3 жыл бұрын
CGStirk no i know how to animate it. But IOR should be values between 1 - 2. the noise luminance gives me 0 - 1 values. Can I add 1 to the value, so if noise alpha gives me 0.2, I would add it and then get 1,2. Right now I get areas that are black because of the low IOR values.
@CGStirk
@CGStirk 3 жыл бұрын
@3rdpoly Okay, IOR values can go beyond 2 or in some instances negative. But in V-Ray when you add a map to a channel, the values are normalized. So, since there isn't a theoretical max for IOR in physics, I'm not sure how to get a precise IOR value from a map.

got a question though, at my office, I am always told to add a color profile converter to my exr rendering to preview p3, then the rendering would look very grey out, so what the deal here??
@CGStirk
@CGStirk 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like there's a double correction for the gamma somewhere. Depending on how you've set up the project, you can either leave color management on or off but there are differences with what to do next. Are you using ACEScg too? If so, I do have a video on that, so if you want to preview DCI P3, you'd just switch the display profile to that instead of sRGB.

@@CGStirk thank you for your quick reply! honestly, there are a lot of thing I don't know about color space and comp in general, I am just a 3d guy trying to do some comps, I think I need to dig deeper into what sort of set up my office is using... anyway, what seems to happen is that the directors from various TV shows would provide a LUTs, and it seems that after the color profile converter, I would apply that LUT as a adjustment layer, and the grey out color would then become more saturated, so don't know what going on there... I once heard from a senior colleague of mine, describing the LUT as linear color, so there might be some hint there...Honestly, there is so much for me to learn, on color space alone and I have a feeling that different companies might use a different set up... anyway, thank you for your insight and will take a look at your other videos. I have subscribed.
@CGStirk
@CGStirk 2 жыл бұрын
The LUT would probably be applied after the color profile converter unless the LUT includes transforms for the color space too, which would mess things up if you're using your own transforms. Admittedly, After Effects isn't the best tool for this but it's possible to get right. I might be able to help if you post some screenshots on my server.

Sure. You need to apply a blur effect on the matte layer (the render of the exhaust). The curves effect goes underneath on an adjustment layer using the exhaust as a track matte. So, curves alone does not affect the feathering; it's the blur that does.

@@CGStirk Well it works, but there is a big problem. I loaded a scene as xref Scene, and I loaded some models using xref object. It worked. It rendered. With xref object you can even fully animate the objects, and my CAT rig. Unfortunately I won't be able to use xref because of one very important reason. After saving the scene. I go back and try to load my scene back in, and max crashes and shuts down. So even though it works, it is unusable. I am looking for a solution now. Xref scene does not let you manipulate the animation, so it is great for background object. xref object is needed so you can animate cat rigs etc

Hmm, well great lol. Not being able to animate it is actually kind of pointless and I suppose is another reason why 3ds max is less used for film production than Maya. Awesome! For zDepth, you don't render motion blur. I'm not even sure if it's possible to do. If it was absolutely necessary, then you'd need to render a velocity pass and composite motion blur manually. I've never done this in AE, though. For the bg color, if the bg is white and the plane gets whiter farther from the camera, that is fine. The values can be easily inverted in AE as long as the gradient is consistent.
