Ritchie said he developed that front to keep people at a distance, for his own survival in ... the business called show. He wanted management to get another guitarist to tour the USA as he was being worn down so much he had a breakdown. I remember when several of the band became ill in the early 70’s. You may not know that they split the same year they outsold every act on the planet. That isn’t usually what happens. They now put it down to exhaustion but if it hadn’t happened we wouldn’t have had many other great bands in the Purple family.

Just flipping through the SKY ARTS CHANNEL and lo and behold what a freeking treat I stumbled accidentally upon , almost a 2 hour documentary about one of the most amazing , outstanding, original and mean and moody men in rock none other than RITCHIE BLACKMORE , a extraordinary and rather personal insight and quite often HATED guitarist ever known to pick up an axe blow the AUDIENCE AND OCCASIONALLY THE BAND AWAY AND THEN STICK TWO FINGERS UP TO EVERYONE AND ANYONE ( ASK DAVID COVERDALE... "MEOW").Love him or Loath him you can't dispute what he doesn't know around a guitar/ lute etc isn't worth knowing!!!!!.It's one of those jewel in the crown finds and you realise extremely and rather quickly ...why didn't I know about this a damn sight sooner!!!!!! I'm not going to spoil it,find it,watch it,digest it,it makes for outstanding viewing," ENOUGH SAID"...... thank you.

The only thing i think he is mistaken, and he deliberately says so, i'm sure he knows it's no true. There are not 5 egos in DP, only 2, Ian and Ritchie. I mean, DP couldn't last so much at all if all five of them they had such egos. Ritchie knows this, but doesn't say it like that. But for me, he is one of the best ever, and i love him for just being different, a true genius.

Ritchie blames himself for a very nasty blow Ian Gillan took on the head after falling of stage in the early days (one of his practical jokes, no doubt) He says Ian Gillan changed as a person after that, he became more gloomy and withdrawn.

Rick Jones I respect your views on RITCHIE BLACKMORE and without a doubt that rings true with a multitude of musicians and fans,I prefer Ritchie's early back catalogue... definitely his loudest and technically brilliant...fast forward to Blackmore's night and he shows an extremely diverse sound coupled with his wife's enchanting vocals Ritchie has raised the benchmark yet again. Its incredible how musicians of advancing years still produce music that in my humble opinion influence so many artists half and less than Ritchie's age he is without a doubt a MONSTER of a GUITARIST and to finish of my post I'm gonna quote something that's sums up the" man in black"and his STRAT "LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL"!!!!!, constantly changing and consistently brilliant!!!!!

He smiled at the end..WOW! Personally DP should have never reunited in the 80's, Ritchie was making better music in Rainbow. Deep Purple's magic was gone. Gillan's voice was never the same. Other than Knocking at your back door and perfect 'strangers. The songs and lyrics were getting kind of corny and Lord was playing synthesizers. DP early 70's is the best Rock Band in the solar system. They had a beautiful formula that worked every time..Gillan's unbelievable vocals..organ solo...more killer vocals..then a great guitar solo like no one was doing in those days.

I don't know the guy. I wasn't a fly on the wall during any of it, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But you have to understand something about this biz: it's rotten and it's cut throat, especially on the management and booking side. Screwing artists over, backstabbing, bullying, lying and shady dealing was (and to some extent still is) the order of the day. The media often is the perfect channel for cementing unnuanced (and often planted) impressions and reports of outrageous behaviour, sensationalistic and scandal driven as it is. Some, maybe a lot of the rep people like Blackmore got, was simply due to the fact that they demanded a modicum of respect and held people to their word. So not only was he trying to navigate that hellish scene, but he also had to deal with band members etc. Who got high on themselves (among other things) while he was the driving force. This is also a very common phenomenon, and most of the time you'll notice that when "the others" have had their way, unwilling as they are to accept that they may be something "lesser" than the driving force, the thing just goes poof. Fact of the matter is that there are many talents in the world, and no one will deny the importance of the chemistry of the whole, but there are very few who are able to create and run things that truly stand out. If that wasn't the case, there would be a brilliant album for every great musician.
