My Drow bard, Chosen of the Masked Lord of the Night, has a new song to sing now. I thank you.

Starting a new campaign this weekend where I'll be playing a Cleric of Eilistraee who's primary form of worship is through dance. After reading my backstory, my DM gave me a special homebrew Cleric ability that was based around dancing, but also, rather importantly, required music as well. I know he'd be rather disappointed in me if he gave me this special ability, and then I just showed up and said "You all hear a song play," so I've been killing myself trying to figure out what the perfect song would be. Never in a thousand years could I imagine stumbling upon a song as perfect as this. I want to say thank you, and know that I'll be using this as my hymn to Eilistraee.

I'm running a Drow Paladin of Eilistraee, Chaotic Good, trying to renew a name for Drow trying to leave the underdark, offering redemption to those who would come to the moon, and giving release to those who would remain under the spider queen.

In a campaign I ran (decided I'd prefer just drawing it rather than DMing it) I remember making Eilistraee and Vhaeraun on good terms with one another, like genuine allies and family. They kept each other company in the underdark, and they only wanted to stop their mother from being...well, it's Lolth so lol They don't at all agree on what to do once they escape, but they've made an agreement to never hurt one another or attack their followers. Basically, "I don't like how you want to enslave literally every other race, but you're my brother and I don't want to lose you again so we'll cross that bridge once we get there." Meanwhile Lolth is actually trying to better herself and become a true ruler and leader for her people, and created a perfect plan to get her old life back without her children or anyone else knowing. Just her, her current lover/consensual servant (he's really into it, like he volunteered to be one), and a small faction of her highest clerics. Her kids just think she's fucking with people like usual.

I must say that you've made my night, this song does a beautiful job of mixing a sense of sorrow with the calming pace of the guitar that pulls in two ideas that Vhaeraun and Eilistraee stand for. (a neat little brother sister relationship I might add.)

@@RittaBRF One thing, what is it that drove the churches of Eilistraee and Vhaeraun together? I'm here for the lomg-winded explanation.
@RittaBRF3 жыл бұрын
@@kannonball5789 it's tricky to answer that here because one of my players could read it 😅 the common knowledge (plus what my players have found out so far) is as follows. In my world (the continent of Vestige) there was a series of world-changing calamities that stemmed from a sudden and violent conflict between deities that remains unexplained to this day. Many deities mysteriously vanished, one of them being Lolth. The mortals (and many immortals) were left wondering why. Having no explanation for why it began or why it stopped from the gods themselves, what remained of each culture eventually came up with their own interpretations of the event, which would favor a certain deity and would become deeply engrained in their cultures. Religious wars eventually broke out as a result, mirroring the divine conflict they had witnessed. Based on the event, the drows painted a picture of the twins that was very different from prior knowledge. It was said they had joined forces to avenge their mother, but had been unsuccessful. The drows took this upon themselves, linking their inherent pride as a race to what they interpreted as seeking justice for what had happened by means of genocide and colonization of the overworld. There are many clerics amongst them who supposedly receive divine powers from the twins. However, there have been reports that there are prominent drows figures who have recently started questioning the twins' alliance upon studying texts that predated the calamities.

"Better than expected" is a huge understatement. This sounds so beautiful and professional! The sound fits a fantasy setting perfectly, too - it really wouldn't be out of place in a (never happening) movie, with fire crackling and more and more drow joining in. Vhaeraun (and, okay, his sister too) is so much more interesting than Lolth, always happy to see people who enjoy the character :-)

Thank you so much!!! Yes, I agree with you a lot in regards to Vhaeraun and Eilistraee being more interesting to me than Lolth

Wow, this is really cool! In my campaign I'm playing a drow wizard that worships Eilistraee, that recently changed her subclass to Theurgy, choosing the life domain. And I'm loving working with Eilistraee with my dm. But this is a very interesting take on their lore, especially from what I saw from your comments. Since this religion that worships both seems to follow Vhaeraun's teachings more than Eilistraee. But I could see how, in a world with the cataclysm that you described, if Eilistraee was hurt enough, she may change her ideals of equality to protect the drow. This would have to be something drastic, but what you've described could definitely manage that.
@RittaBRF2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! I love Eilistraee as well! Not wanting to spoil, but being pretty sure the players in my campaign are not gonna read through these comments, I can tell you that she kept her original values ahaha. A consequence of the cataclysm was a big severance in the communication between deities and their followers, so some deities' values became misconstrued (either or purpose or not) to support the narrative they need for war. And maybe the source of some divine powers the clerics use may not be what they expect
@goreslashdow38132 жыл бұрын
@@RittaBRF Ahhh, that also makes a lot of sense. Poor Eilistraee then! If she's unable to communicate with her followers, and seeing the drow become this, thinking they're doing her will... oof. And that's an interesting twist. It would only be appropriate in a world like that, but if the dm revealed cleric powers aren't coming from where I thought they were... that would really get me!

Some of my characters are primarily followers of vhaeraun such as A female CN drow intrigue oracle (i play Pathfinder but use dnd lore as well) whose goal is to overthrow her mother who is the head matron of a drow city and convert it to being controlled by followers of vhaeraun eventually she will become a exarch/chosen of his. Her husband the other character I'm playing is a renegade cambion (is fairly anti demon and resists sone of the worst aspects of his ancestry) who will also take a god of war like position in vhaeraun's version of the drow pantheon though he also has a following among the surface who are typically demon hunters and such

I find your song to be fascinating. From what I can discern from the lyrics, this song is from the perspective of a kingdom of surface dwelling drow called Raykika. These drow worship both Vhaeraun and Eilistraee. Interestingly enough, they seem to maintain the conquering and slavery aspects of Vhaeraun’s faith despite Eilistraee’s faith generally being opposed to such things. Could you perhaps elaborate on how this synthesis of these two radically different deific twins is done? Again, great work!
@RittaBRF Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's exactly right! It's important to note that this takes place in a world of my creation to which I've adapted the Forgotten Realms deities (it's also my first attempt at worldbuilding so it might be underwhelming). In my world, there was a cataclysmic event (prompted by the gods, colloquially named Incursion) that left the world in ruin. One of the consequences of this event was a sort of distancing of deities from some planes of existence (including the material plane). Divine magic got weakened, contacting deities is super hard, etc... Although that was the case, the contrasting aftermath of this was the rise of many theocracies, each one coming to certain dogmatic conclusions about what really happened. The drows believe Lolth to be dead and the twins to seek vengeance for their mother's demise. They conquer land in the name of the twins, sort of enacting the twins' revenge. The dissonance between the twins' old faiths (as their were before the Incursion) is a focal point about Reykika that I will present to the players. In fact, it is known by the players as of now that some highly regarded warriors have deserted the kingdom due to growing doubts about this very topic. Furthermore, Reykika is not the only kingdom that has come to very dubious dogmatic conclusions about deities' roles during and after the Incursion. Without going much into detail (for spoilers' sake), there might be some forces working to upkeep these collective beliefs. (I hope this wasn't too longwinded for you ahah)

This is absolutely stunning. If I wasn't so shy, I'd love to sing this as my drow character worships Vhaeraun and respects Lolth (as without her, Vhaeraun would not exist), and also enjoys music and dance (thus Eilistraee's forte). You did an absolutely stunning and exceedingly elegant job on this divine song. I love it! I also have a question: What/Who is Reykika? Thanks!
