VHS isn't bad, people's capture methods are bad. If you film something with a new tape and play it back directly on a tv you have a very clear image unless the camera is a cheap piece of crap. if the digitizing is done correctly you wont have any nostalgia

Well, because it's a very low quality capture. Old video tape stored video in 525 lines, 480 of which are visible, at 60 fields per second. So old tapes, when captured properly can look pretty darn good.

You could probably get a few people together, electrical engineer and computer science guy, for example. Then reverse-engineer. You could find similar computer chips... the magnetic tape stuff, you would have to get maybe a CNC machinist... and maybe a chemist to make more tape polymers. It's all doable but there's no "economy of scale."
