VHS video capture cards and Hi 8 video transfer devices

I capture VHS tapes using iMovie. I transfer Hi 8 tapes using FCPX and I Capture Hi 8 tapes using Premiere Pro . I use my Mac Mini and my custom built Windows PC to demonstrate the Canopus ADVC 110 and the Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle.

Thank you for this wealth of information! 2 questions: 1) With the ADVC110 and recording in Final Cut Pro- are there any options to make sure it records in the DV format, or does it just do that automatically? I didn't see any options on your screen where you select what format/codec it's recorded in. 2)Do you have a recommendation for a good quality VCR to buy (I know it's used market at this point)? I have probably over 100 old family movie VHS tapes with precious footage I want to convert that has my dad and other family members who have passed away. Once the analogue tapes hits the Firewire DV converter it is converter to the DV-25 codec. FCPX and iMovie will capture in the DV-25 codec.

What happened to your ADS Pyro A/V? You prefer the Canopus 110 over ADS?

The ADVC 110 can be powered by the Firewire cable. No need for a power adapter. If you need to use Thunderbolt adapters for the ADVC 110 you might need the optional power supply.

I'm using ADVC-100 to convert my old PAL format Hi8 tapes to be captured on my computer. Could you let me know what is the best file format to use, as well as the resolution, refresh rate, etc.?

I just got an ADS Pyro off ebay but the dang thing keeps cutting out when I try to capture. Even when I use the composite out to view, it clips on the tv.

What software are you using? Is the tape damaged? Is the control track damaged?

@@TechTVusa After testing this thing on a 2007 iMac and a pc with a firewire card, I believe the device to be faulty. I have tried macos and windows 7 on the imac and windows 8 on the pc thinking an older os would matter but many issues arise. The only thing I do not have is another firewire 400 cable. In windows, it will connect-disconnect-connect-disconnect-connect-disconnect. On mac, it will try to initialize then crash Quicktime 7. in windows in windv, it captures a few seconds and then locks up windv. What dip switch settings do you use? My model is the API-557.

iMovie works. You could use Pinnacle Studio.

@@TechTVusa Thank you, finaly converted via Canopus ADVC - 300 / iMovie recorded some video samples...big surprise for me. Imported footage is clear on my MacBookPro screen /Panasonic NV HS 1000 with TBC, tape is SVHS/, unfortunately when I open the video in VLC is visibly degradeted and grainy. I use pro cabling, all setups as recommend Grass Valley...input resolution 640x480? My ELGATO device has 720x576 and picture is 40% higher quality. What is your point of view or any advice pls? Thank you.

@@kathuta8117I don't care about VLC. What does it look like in Resolve, FCPX, Premiere Pro etc.? The ADVC 300 should be capturing at 720 X 576 (PAL) or 720 X 480 (NTSC). The ADVC 300 does not need a TBC.

Instead of firewire/thunderbolt adapter, can you use a S-video/usb adapter to connect the Canopus to ur PC?

There are USB video capture cards with S-Video but they can be problematic. The Firewire DV converters are a better option.

Does premiere have DV option again. Last I checked they got rid of it and only have HDV option which does not work.

The latest version has DV and HDV. I just got done using it. There have been upgrades at times that have been buggy.
