Smokin tone for a budget amp? OH yeah. The VHT special 6 ultra is one a very few amps I have "kept" rather than "flipped" . Its simple, but has a lot of flexibility. Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe. Dave Whipple

It has that 80s metal sound when driven up and that southern rock sound when down on the drive good stuff

You should get an sm57 or something. We don't get a good idea of how these sound through the camera microphone. Good commentary and subject matter. Love bargain stuff.

I have a collection of cheap pawn shop, yard sale gear. I have found that cheap doesn't mean poor tone quality. Some old solid state amps sound like tube amps. I bought a 52 magnatone 197 v3 for 5$ at a yard sale. Many people don't appreciate what they have.
@whipscheapguitars28567 жыл бұрын
That's so true. There is so much gear that you can get a great sound out of...and isn't "sound " what its all about anyway. Honestly I don't think many people could tell between budget gear and high end gear in a blind test. there are so many variables. If you don't know the channel check out Johan Segborn's channel. He has GREAT gear and does some A/b comparisons with cheap stuff. Its pretty enlightening.

My wife lets me bring home any gear I want as long as it's Peavey. Not even joking. I played as a kid, quit for my early 20's, and got back into it later so she never heard me play. Went on Craigslist and bought a bunch of old peaveys. I bought a predator usa strat copy for 115 and a Red Stripe USA Bandit for $65 with a footswitch. Sold both of them for 200 a piece on Ebay. When she saw that, she said get whatever you want as long as you can break even or better. So I have a garage full of old Peavey amps and guitars now. Plus a few other things.
@whipscheapguitars28567 жыл бұрын
Wow, thats awesome! Whats her deal with Peavey? Did she work there or is from Mississippi? Those red and silver stripe bandits can really SMOKE when you dial them in right! Love that gear.
@misterknightowlandco7 жыл бұрын
Lol she knows absolutely nothing about guitars and amps. She just knows when I bring home a Peavey, that I'm going to be adding to the bank account when I resell it instead of losing money like most everything else. I love their stuff and would keep it but it seems like every time I take an old peavey amp or guitar to a jam night or something, someone offers me an ebay price for it and it goes home with them. lol.
@gmr97016 жыл бұрын
You guys seem to know a lot about Peavey. Could you help me dial in a decent tone on a Rage 158? Its old af, missing a few knobs but its still fighting. I can't seem to set it up tho, I was thinking on getting a multi effects pedal, probably a Zoom.

Good stuff Dave, it really has that sound like some dudes back in the 60's where holding there very own Woodstock in there garage and people where coming buy with there gear setting up and playing and partying with rose tea and guacamole and ice cream sandwiches- getting high on Whipple Dust and the music was killer and now years later the tapes were found and digitally remastered as the Garage stock tapes being sold for $1,000's of dollars and everyone says "yeah I was there, yeah me too" "Oh dude I think I remember you were puking up guacamole or you were possessed" and that's it did I mention the ice cream sandwiches ? I think did. Okay later !

One of the sweetest deals for excellent tone out there ! I run a vintage 5751 in V-1 V-2 has a good vintage 12AX7 and a USA Sylvania 6V6Gt for power. The speaker does need a lot of breaking in ! however I unplug the internal speaker and plug in my 2x12 cab with a Weber 12F150 and a sleeper weber the Sig 12FB with the British cone, both are 50 watts and WOW !!! its sounds so good !!! I always use the Ultra channel (for lack of a better definition) and just keep the gain at 1/4 to slightly more and use the normal volume to get my level up. My best sounds happen when I kick in my Route 66 Compressor side and hit it with a Cmatmods Signadrive with the gain at #1 Yep that low ! I got mine for 130 bucks and all I had to do was replace the power switch (10 minutes) and VHT sent me the switch for free !!!

So I pick up a VHT super six off craigslist today and check out youtube to see what I got. Damn, here's the condo builder. Lmao. I'm a chaeap ass myself. You're exactly right, don't have to spend 1000's to get great sound. You're spot on. Let's see you build some from parts.

Sweet dude thanks! There's a lot of channels that don't really put into consideration the audience that can't afford expensive guitars or even "Mid range" guitars that go for $400-$650.

@brianyork55107 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the Texture switch might be switching a negative feedback loop in and out of the circuit.
@whipscheapguitars28567 жыл бұрын
If I remember the schematic on that one the texture switch is a conjunctive filter. It it were push pull it would be a cap and a resistor ( in series) between the plates of the output tubes, but with a single ended amp Its from the plate to the B+ in parallel with the OT?? I think? But i'm pretty sure its a conjunctive filter. All dr Z's have em, fender pro juniors have em too.
@whipscheapguitars28567 жыл бұрын
Not the switchable filter , but a built in filter. I think the switchable has the same resistor but has 2 different value caps to choose from. In the middle position there is no filter at all. This sounds great clean and with a little breakup but if you push it too hard it gets a bit "ratty" . with the filters ON its stays really solid and sounds great, but it does drop a little sparkle and treble in the process. There are these goofy little jumper wires on the pre amp tubes too, that if you snip them out the amp gains a bit of treble.
@DusterBuglas5 жыл бұрын
Could you use a ABY passive pedal to switch between clean and gain channels?? I really want this amp but need to be able to go from clean to distortion mid song
@whipscheapguitars28565 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't see why you couldn't. Also, you can just use a pedal out the back of the amp to go from the regal channel to the "pull boost knob" on the channel.......huge difference in gain when the knob is pulled and there is a spot on the back of the panel to use a footswitch to change between regular and boost.
@gutbucket2605 жыл бұрын
Great tube amp that is hand wired and you can't beat the price. By the way, not sure if it's the camera angle, but you got ax murder eyes going on ; )

@whipscheapguitars28566 жыл бұрын
Its VERY loud for 6 watts. Ive played out with it in a small room before and it was enough...pretty amazing really. Its tube so there is no real way to fudge the output ( it has a single 6v6in the output stage) so its really only about 6 watts....but it is a very solid little amp with a lot of volume.

Thats like saying you wont drive a Bad ass Camaro,Mustang,Challenger.because It dosnt go around the track as fast when you drive it..The funny part is your favorite setting on that VHT sounds like a Harsher version of a fender..Dont get me wrong,I will scoop one of these VHT's up when one is finally in my area..But the hot rod Deluxe clean channel gets that Expensive oh so sweet sound on the cheap ..I mostly play through a Super champ in the front room so what do I know..lol..Oh I do know one thing You have me buy a lot of guitars but not like you would think,You said..But a Seagull,Nope no used Seagulls but when I went and looked at the new ones I found an awesome cheaper acoustic The YamahaFs800.You said...Buy The Epiphone Special...Nope..NO Specials for the right price but when I went to look at them new I found an AWESOME used Gibson Les Paul Studio.Do you see what you are doing to me?..You are allowing me to use you as an excuse to to buy awesome guitars...lolol, Thanks for your awesome videos.
