To me, the best part of this cover is the chord change after "never gonna let you go". In the original, it returns to the major home chord, but this version goes with a minor chord. It adds a brief sense of foreboding to the track, as if there is a momentary sense of doubt, a sense that this "dream" relationship is doomed to fail. It's subtle; it's completely on brand for the Viagra Boys - and it's brilliant.

Matt Sweeney produced this cover. He also recorded a cover of OD’d in Denver (original by Hank Williams Jr) with Bill Callahan and Bonnie Prince Billy that also adds a little emotional complexity to the song. Worth checking out.

@@emily-gh9ox thanks for the compliment! Much appreciated. 'Sundee' is very much the Victorian way of saying Sunday so I figure the whole band is Victorian. Their clips are all filmed in Melbourne. Ps. I really like the Canadian accent. It took me years to differentiate it from the American accents but it sounds so much friendlier, much warmer and welcoming.

Very interesting about the Victorian way of saying things.. My mom and late grandma always say Sundee rather than annunciate the full "Sun- Day" as well.. and Saturday is Sare'dee Lmao . Not sure why and I dont notice it with a lot of other canadians.

Yeah, there is a menace that comes at the end of each "I'm never going to let him go" that turns it into something more foreboding then the Prine song - - for me, it's what makes the cover.

Amy and Nose Man really smash it with this one. Love that nefarious undertone the song has. You can see them clinging on to each other to stay balanced while singing this on karaoke in a redneck bar before driving home under the influence.

This was randomly suggested two weeks ago… never heard of them, thought it was an old vid, first look, played it, thought wtf?! AMyl and the CHaps (2 aussie bands) have saved punk rock. Its a big claim, i know, but listen to Chaps "6 L GTR" AND Amyl "Gacked on Anger" and I would be suprised if anyone does not come away feeling the same (about them saving punk rock)

Saw them at Coachella 2022. The only mosh pit I’ve ever seen at Coachella since I started working it in 2017. Met the Viagra Boys at catering tent before their set. Priceless.

Really didn’t expect this - a cover version of John Prine. And a really good one. It has a Viagra Boys sense of hanging on tight for when everything spins out of control, which it does. And I like the not giving a fuck about Getty images. Good lads. Love it.

As a newer fan of the Viagra Boys I've (watched) listened to this songs dozens of times in the past few months. Everything is amazing from the stock videos and especially Amy. I was at a friends house last weekend and she had a country mix on and I heard the original John Prine version. I had no idea it was a cover (despite the "In loving memory of John Prine" in the description. Such an amazing cover of a song I never knew existed.

Found this song because I like Sleaford Mods. Watched their song "Nudge It" featuring Amy Taylor. Started checking out Amyl and the Sniffers songs, and then came across this golden nugget!
