Viair 88P - Quick Release Chuck Mod (Extension Hose, Self-Locking Quick Release Air Chuck)

On this week's Overlanding Gear, Mods, and DIY, I'm going to show a really inexpensive modification that takes most air compressors (like my Viair 88P) to the next level.
It's basically a quick release chuck that quickly snaps on and off of your valve stems and can be easily threaded onto the end of the default air compressor hose. A solution that is working for me has been the Smittybilt 5.65 CFM Air Compressor - 2781, which gives me far more CFM than the 88P, and with similar duty cycles that means the Smittybilt actually works with less stress than the VIAIR 88P. We are talking about a compressor that does indeed cost a bit more than the 88P, but I just wanted to offer you another alternative that might just suit your needs, and I have tied in a 2.5 Gal tank as well and the performance is incredible. Thanks for your video for us overlanders on a budget, I'm ALWAYS looking for the best bang for the buck, cheers!!!

Yeah, great feedback! I’ve had the 88P since the beginning and it’s been a great little compressor, but as I go more and more, upgrades definitely show themselves as necessities. Thanks for the kind words too!

Great piece of gear! That's the kind of tire valve connection that came on my ARB air hose...it's great. The only issue I have on mine (may be an ARB thing) is that sometimes the seal to the valve leaks and I have to keep messing with it to get it air tight. 80% of the time it doesn't do that, and either way it beats screwing it on.

Yeah, I'll definitely be weighing back in on this long term if there are any issues. I mean, honestly, if it lasts for a couple of years, at about $7, I'll just buy another one, haha. Hopefully it's fine, but we'll see. .

What your looking for is called a male Schrader valve. It will allow you to use any reg 1/4 inch air hose attachment.

Sir, the chuck change on the 88P has been done approx. 4-5yrs. ago. Spring loaded q/r chucks are a welcome upgrade. Advised Viair regarding change, so far nothing.

Are you saying that the newer Viair 88P's have a quick release chuck on them? If so, I wonder if I just bought mine a few years ago and it was a remaining "previous" version. I just got a faster flowing compressor that also doesn't have a quick release chuck so I'm just moving it over there.

I switched the chuck a few months after purchase. Pretty much when I realized a q/r chuck could be in purchased separately. Great little pump that 88P, awesome specs for it's size.

Still working great for me. I switched out my Viair for a faster flowing Gobege and moved it over and still use it to this day!

I have this same inflator and is there any way to hook it up to a dual air Chuck attachment? I just need to inflate my parents RV tires and im trying to figure out what couplet can attach a long dual air chuck to get to the rear tires since there are duallys in rear of their small class C. Thanks for any help

Hmmm, that's a good question. I tried doing some research to figure out if there might be some type of adapter to switch up a dual chuck to attach to the Viair 88P and I couldn't find anything specific. It seems like they would have to make something adapt it to that internal threaded attachment style, but I don't see anything. Sorry! Wish I could have found something to help!

@@AllThingsOverlanding thanks for the reply! I went to hd and harbor freight and no one could figure it out either! I dunno how i did it but i was able to fish around my 88p hose from a diff angle to air up that outside RV rear tire! It took a while but im glad i checked cause my parenrs RV tires psi was like 50 in the rear and thats low for a class C. So i was able to get 70 in front and 75 in rear.
