If you use smaller grit, there will be more of a shine on the parts. And it will also get in between the threads. Good demonstration. I'm heading to see how you made it! Thanks!

Great job. I will make something similar for small parts cleaning. I have been pondering the pros and cons of a sand blasting cabinet, with polycarb work viewing window, needing gloves, or rolling tumblers, or something like this vibrating system. Seems for a small shop, this method fits the bill.

You should perhaps try mixing your medium using silica sand it's cheap and readily available also to polish it of to a beautiful finish put it again into the tumbler filled with cat litter. Peace

Brass is quite soft, so garnet, which is VERY hard, isn't a good idea, you just wear the surface and edges off. and as Robert said, Vinegar takes rust off excellently, as does electrolysis (free if you're using a solar panel)

PLEASE NEED HELP with media: i tried , 1) sand 4 cats: nothing after 60min; 2) silica sand for cats : something cleans...but too much time 3) black sea sand (washed with normal water): no good 4) silica pool sand : no good after 2h 5) glass huge sand pool filter: a little bit better.. i m confused.. the media need to be heavy ? need to be of 2 /3 mm ?
@calysagora36155 жыл бұрын
First of, is your machine this powerful? Many weaker machines are typically left running over night. It seems to me that lighter mediums are more effective, people use things like crushed walnut shells, perlite, vermiculite, aluminium oxide, bentonite cat litter, etc. Which gives a much more polished result. Light media seems to flow more around the parts, rather than flow with the parts, and let's the parts bounce around more and hit the tray and each other, which probably helps. Parts seem to float on heavier mediums and don't grind along the bottom or hit each other at all. I'm thinking heavier mediums are probably great in rotating drum tumblers, which is another popular option.

if you had put these parts in vinegar... it would have taken care of the problem.... leaving the tumbler good for only perhaps a finishing touch... you would have saved a ton of energy or fuel...
@bandit9116 жыл бұрын
Robert Ostman how would he have saved a ton of energy or fuel? vinegar is free to produce? the container it comes in is free to produce? not to mention 24 hours or more it takes to work with vinegar

Neat and thanks for showing us, but what do the neighbors think when you run it at 3am on a sunday morning?

😂🤣 I don't run it at 3am on a Sunday morning. To be honest I scrapped this tumbler 2 months after I filmed this years ago.

But he didn't spent more than a few second putting the parts in and out of the machine. I loved my sandblasting cabinet back when I had a big workshop, but it took lots of effort, and needed a quite serious compressor and water condenser to do any remotely fast bare stripping. And I never found any comfortable position to work in, in any of the ones I used. Golden when time is of essence, obviously. Restorations rarely follow that pattern though. I wish I built me a tumbler when I used to restore motorcycles and cars and mechanical gizmos.
@djnoizex896 жыл бұрын
yeah it is tiny enough, you do it all wrong - you need more sand, things wont clean before submerged
@bandit9116 жыл бұрын
djnoizex89 bigger mass will still rise to the top, adding more sand will make no difference
@paulsawczyc50197 жыл бұрын
If parts are sticking up in the air, they are not being cleaned. The parts must be submerged in the "sand" - add more sand.
@bandit9116 жыл бұрын
paul sawczyc it doesn't matter how much sand you add, the highest mass will still rise to the surface
