Visalam is an immensely popular Tamil TV Serial telecast first on Doordarshan (Podhigai) in 2001 and re-telecast about 20 times because of its consistent appeal. With story, screenplay and dialogue by Padmashri Dr. S. Krishnaswamy, it is produced by Dr. Mohana Krishnaswamy and directed by Mrs. Gita Krishna Raj under the prestigious banner of Krishnaswamy Associates (P) Ltd.
Visalam dramatizes the social history of Tamil Nadu from the dawn of the 20th century to that of the 21st Century, by tracing very realistically the ethos of five generations of a family, unusually in the matriarchal line reflecting the changes in gender equations over 100 years. Through a sensitive portrayal of period and characters, the epic story unfolds the drama in the personal lives of individuals, constantly linking it to the social and political changes in the country at large through the whole century.
