How does he go from super cut at 6’5 to freaking damn near 12 feet tall when he loses his shit? He really is tapping directly into the big monkey within cus he gets like quadruple the muscle mass and doubles in height. It’s why I love his character so much especially the DBS Broly cuz he is such a nice dude but when it’s time to fight he goes ham and he is very quick to learn. In a lot of ways it felt like Toriyama was trying to depict guys who are really cool and nice dudes that have to keep their tempers in check. I’m more like Vegeta I’m just an asshole. And I’ve always been abit of a prodigy when it comes to fighting. And just like him I figured out quick that eventually someone is gonna kick your ass. But unlike him I’ve learned to swallow my pride.

I only found out that it was Sean thanks to CDawgVA posting a video showcasing movies and TV shows with bad voice acting. In short, it seems that every other role he's had is either forgettable or a frickin' joke.

I've known people who got falsely accused of rape... They never really recover. Even when proven innocent, the fact that you were accused makes you considered the worst of the worst. The main issue I can see is that they were not the ones to animate the content. Someone else - in fact, a lot of someone elses - put tons of effort into animating every anime we see, and so from that perspective I can see how it would hurt to see someone else take what you've made and use it for themselves for free. I still support abridged series. But I can understand the argument.

@@young_shaad5227 Based on what I've seen, it's generally Toei that calls stuff on DBZA. Comparitively, Funimation has literally hired them as voice actors before and currently. It is worth noting though, Sean Schemmel has been working with Funimation for a very long time. It is possible that Funimation was stricter on DBZA in the early years and Sean's attitude stems from that, but the overall company has become more favorable to them over time.

It could be argued that TFS not only was under fair use since they transformed the original content, it also brought attention to the IP and probably got people to check out the original content. DBZA I’d go as far as to say is souly responsible for the resurgence. Super is more like DBZA than any other official DB series, just less talented and passionate writing. It still dictates how characters in the actual anime act. In all fairness to Schemmel, his statement gives the impression that what he's saying is more or less coerced by his contract with Funimation, since he says he'd probably be able to enjoy it if he was done voicing Goku. And I'm not saying this to white knight for him, I think he's a POS, but I think it's fair to give a reasonable interpretation of what he's saying.

Sean is a POS for sure, but there's no denying that Funimation seems to hold many of their VAs under their thumb. Several have posted multiple tweets against piracy, even though a couple of them have had roles in fandubs before they started working for Funimation (Brittany Lauda being one of them).

TFS is publicly despised by Toei and loved for the most part by funimation, which is why many of their actors have gone to voice funi roles. I'm pretty sure parody falls under fair use, doesn't it? You could also make the argument that they pulled people back into the Fandom, same with YUGIOH abridged. Lots of people grew up with these shows and moved on, then the Abridged series comes along and gets them interested in it again. Take a look at the Spaz Boys reaction chanel. His audience wanted him to react to DBZA so he went in blind, and he liked it so much he started watching actual Dragon Ball. There are at least some people in the industry that are fine with it. If you watch the commentaries for Hellsing Ultimate Abridged, the voice director for the official dub is on there quoting lines from Abridged.

@PhycoKrusk a parody is actually not legally fair use. Weird Al Yankovich has to separately license every single one of his song parodies. The law ONLY allows for criticism and review and that must be done DURING showcasing a product, not after. So if you're commentating and reviewing every second of the footage shown, it is fair use, but parodies, remixes, reharmonization, dubbing, memes etc. are NOT fair use. Another example: talking about dbz in general while showing random clips of broly unrelated to your sentence would be considered illegal in court, but watching the broly movie and critiquing every step of it would be okay. The problem with the law is that it's based on copyright acts written in the 1970s, before the internet, before the average person had access to a computer. The law is designed for giant corporations who have teams of lawyers to handle this stuff. That's why the law doesn't predict parodies, remixes, AMVs etc. at all, they didn't exist back then. The law is severely outdated and that's what we need to be fighting for. but tl;dr: legally Sean is right, TFS' work is 100% still illegal

True, but Dragon Ball Z is a Japanese product, and fair use is largely an American law. Anyway, I also understand Sean's perspective. He's the current lead role of a hit anime series, so why should he be seen publicly endorsing something that the people who employ him are firmly against? At least he said they're talented and funny, so you know he secretly loves them.

The thing is they do make money on a lot of their projects like Streamfourstar, Renegade for Life, 2 Sayains Play, ____ in 5 minutes, Dr. Stoned, and more. They never took a cent of profit for DBZA. It was crowd funded on Patreon so they can make it.

When you make a business model out of an IP you don't own and don't have permission to use it stops being under Fair Use. Let me make this clear because way too many people are too stupid to grasp this (not referring to you directly), FAIR USE IS NOT A LAW, it's a court defense but it's not the "Get out of Jail Free Card" that people think it is. Every company that deals with that says that and disclaimers won't help you either if the IP holder can nail you, they will if they feel obligated to.

Not only that - but KaiserNeko spent a great deal of time actually fixing animation errors of the original release, and of course - making many, many custom animation sequences, essentially transforming it into something new. Much like a "cover" of a song by someone in a different genre. And like many others pointed out - it got many to support the official release out of nostalgia and introducing new fans. It's a love letter in good fun and jest. I mean, do people think the writers/actors in Spaceballs didn't _love_ Star Wars???

Fair enough & a very nuanced take on it. When it comes to DBZA, there's nothing wrong with it. It's a thing that is what it is. And, many creatives who get involved in the industry start out doing stuff like writing fan fiction, or parodying stuff. It doesn't take away from the original work to do so, so there's no harm in it existing.

Japanese companies don't respect fair use laws. Like at all. Nintendo, Konami, Toei. They think that copyright law exists to serve them but shouldn't serve anyone else. What someone's opinion on fair use is doesn't dictate anything.

Character ownership is almost worthless there, but the rules around things like gameplay systems, animation, and anything else physical, are alot more stringent.

I don't like Schemmel, but I get why his response was disapproving. Team Four Star is awesome don't get me wrong, but if the company that Schemmel works under doesn't approve of it, his response makes somewhat sense. He's trying to keep his career. Sean Schemmel's still not really a nice person, but I can't really fault him for this one. And another thing of note, he even said if he were to ever retire, that would be when he could properly enjoy Team Four Star without risking his career.

I feel like most of the issue was with Toei, if Funimation and those guys really had that big of a problem with the TFS guys then they wouldn't have done panels with them or given them voice parts. Let's not forget that Taka was in both Xenoverse games I think a few more of them were in Xenoverse 2 and they had parts in Dragon Ball Z Kai.

I like how he goes straight to the point and says how DBZA is first and foremost something done by people that love the Dragon Ball franchise, and not people that decided to just crap on the show (like the corporations think). If TFS actually hated the show, then DBZA wouldn't have been done the way it was. Every single line and scenario was well thought out, which is the first sign that these aren't haters because they actually went to the lengths of paying attention to almost every detail. They cared. And if TFS did crap on something from time to time (like the pre-canon Broly's character), it was usually things that were universally considered bad and they weren't just expressing their own opinions. If anything, I'd say TFS is a voice of the fandom, a good one at that.
