For those who are looking for the true meaning of this great song: The singing guy says that he is in love with the girl without knowing her name or ethnicity. At a time when Greece was a part of the Ottoman empire and villages where divided in separate neighborhoods (Greeks - Christians, Turkish - Muslims), mixed marriages were strictly forbidden and unacceptable. This folk song questions the taboos of that period not only for race and religion discrimination but also asks “Is it a crime to love someone with an ethnicity that is considered your worst enemy”.

First of all, northern Greece was Ottoman until about 1912, so the song wouldn't probably be 3 centuries old. Secondly, the dichotomy "Rhomia - Tourka" had no meaning apart from religious affiliation during that period; a "Tourka" would have been a Muslim that were Greek, Turkish or Albanian speaking

The lyrics are inspired by a Greek folk murder ballad. It's about the forbidden love between a Greek man and a Turkish woman during the time of the Turkish occupation of Greece. The song title and lyrics roughly translate as follows : 'What Evil' What evil has poor me done? and everyone calls out 'murderer' Did I go and kill somebody Did I go and kiss somebody Did I go and kiss somebody In the old neighborhood on the hill I too, love a young woman Her name, I know not whether she's Turkish or Greek.

If I have made a similar comment before, sorry. Too many Coors. I love this song so much. I don't remember if I bought my used clarinet before or after this. Probably after. I can't understand Greek, but I can use translation software. I have lived in backwards small communities. I believe I can understand both the beauty and ugliness of the situation laid out in this song. The instruments, the vocal work, I love this music.
