that "child-like" is used as an insult is amazing; it may be the highest compliment ever.

Gary was one of my storytelling teachers at SVA in 07-08. I enjoyed his pressence and his personal narratives about travel and making things. His was more of a fine art class than a comics class.

His voice and mannerisms are so much more calm than I would've imagined. I've been a fan of his art since the 80s and never heard him talk. Weird.

This is a very professionally executed interview- a perfect example of a successful interview that is both entertaining and informative. The funny thing is that the quality of the tone actually superseded my eventual lack of interest in the content, which made it easy to finish viewing till the end. Good job guys.

Always liked Gary Panter and Pettibon, since way back when they were in flipside and on flyer art. Its really good to see people from that era have a lasting impact.

Funny how you make that statement when you probably never took the time to actually visit his comic catalog. Some of his work is very detailed and the line work is impeccable. Some artists make work that may not look appealing to you, but they are in fact simply a different art form. Clearly you don't see that.

As an artist myself, I feel like I should have known of him already, especially with the very first artwork for the Chili's album cover and the set for Pee Wee Playhouse, in which both cases I did not know about .This should be able to teach me to " free up " my style more .

I'm a minimalist junkie in almost every aspect of life except for art like this. I just can't get e-fucking-nough of these kinds of illustrations where it's a massive world on a page and something totally new going on in every square centimetre. Probably comes from my Where's Wally & I-Spy addiction era when I was like 6.

I wish that the work he's done that demonstrates the kind of skill you are talking about was more publicly available. Because its there. The man can really draw. From life, expressive crosshatching, precision, all that. In like 7 completely different styles. His current work is a DELIBERATE throwback to his childhood and teenage years and I will admit I dont don't like it as much as his stuff from the 80's when he had more to prove.

I have to agree with antioogabooga. Gary Panter has tones of imagination and enough skill to put it onto the page, but there are thousands of artists who are more skilled than him. However, when it comes to "art" skill is only important in that you need it to render your vision, the vision itself is the more important part. There is nothing more depressing than an artist with a lot of skill but no imagination or vision. Skill can be taught but imagination and vision can only be developed inside.
@MAR00NPHOENIX11 жыл бұрын
What most people don't understand about art is that it is subjective. What looks like shit to you looks like a masterpiece to someone else.
