He wrote an excellent memoir called Caveat Emptor. The most interesting part of his story was something he did not say here. The FBI told the auction houses they could press charges, but none did because they didn’t want to look like fools who sold fakes to millionaires. The auction houses didn’t even want to know which paintings were fakes.

How is it a work of art if it's at best robotic copying, down to microscopic level brush strokes. The reason those original pieces are works of art is because of the vision the artist had in the way they rendered them, not because of their technique. Nobody says, "oh your brush strokes are brilliant" or "your color mixing is impeccable", it's how they use their techniques to carry a message across that matters. So by that extent reproductions are absolutely worthless in terms of the artist creating them, with advanced enough tech, we can have a robot paint perfect 1:1 reproductions down to microscopic level.
@babery97565 жыл бұрын

One day, while working on a piece, a friend, Dr. and buyer of his came by the studio and watched Picasso making the final touches on his latest work. And stated that he was ready to buy the painting on the spot! Picasso turned to his old friend and said. "Don't buy it, its a fake!" "How can it be a fake? I've watched you work on this painting over the past few weeks myself" Said the Dr. Picasso replied: "it's not because I am Picasso, that I can't paint a fake". Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I've been in the art business for 30 years. The problem with fakes has increased perhaps ten-fold since this was aired. I am seeing exceptionally well forged paintings by famous and semi-famous artists coming to the market. It used to be Warhol and Haring because they were easy but now even the most complicated works are being forged. Forget about China. Right now the auction houses to watch out for are mostly located in Florida in the Miami area, South America especially Peru and former Soviet countries especially Czechia where a large gallery is operating uncaught. I see also a massive amount of fake reproductions of prints coming from Italy who are being sold for top dollar. I consider myself an expert art appraiser and authenticator and even a trained eye like mine plus expertise it is getting harder to weed out the fakes but I can still do it. I don't know how normal people can tell the difference. My suggestion is to buy only what you like. Forget about buying art as an investment as they want you to believe. I think the art market is heading towards difficult times to be honest.

Really? Made it about race at the end? You say black art is becoming more popular. Then go “but why is forgeries of black art getting more popular too???? Is it RACISM?” Uh whut...?
@kanderson55555 жыл бұрын
because black art isn't as well understood having forgeries confuses the exploration into black art e.g. if black people were blocked from entering art shops during segregation their use of colour and materials would be much different from someone who could buy art supplies. If an art piece by a black american artist used the same colour and materials of white american artists of the time it could be suggested that the art business might of been an exception to segregation which may or may not of been true if the authenticity of the work is in doubt. e.g. Jackson Pollock is lauded for creating a truly unique form of american art was wasn't considered a complete imitation of European art style and technique. His art was critical in helping develop American culture into and identity distinct from its european influences. If there us black american art floating around from before Pollock it would be interesting to see if they also had european influences or west african influences or expressed a distinct american identity. Black art pieces could contain information about very sensitive areas of american history. A non black art forger may not be aware enough to sensitively copy such information and data into art reproductions. In the same vein European art pieces are also zeitgeists of european history, they are also disappointed in fakes for the same reasons. The interviewer was asking if that disappointment is on par with issues surrounding fakes of well established and globally appreciated works of art (is it just theft or theft from a historically enslaved and disadvantaged people with a distinct history). To which Perenyi suggests that forgeries are side effect of african art now being appreciated as works of art worthy of the gallery (suggesting african culture is moving up a value chain, suggesting progress for those who embody african culture).

I'm so disgusted. So so disgusted. But, thanks for this lil' documentary. This world never stops to amaze me, especially when it's about money.

selling an unoriginal painting shouldnt be illegal.

i came across 2 pieces when my front neighbor passes in the 90s and his brother asked if i wanted anything and i saw the paintings first and took them along with an old beattles poster. i still have them and keep them hanging in my room framed.
