BS. Some of the poorest reporting I've ever seen. No, you're not supposed to be there to hang out with him. You're supposed to be reporting on him. When Skkreli was later convicted of securities fraud the judge referred to "the egregious multitude of lies" he told investors. In other words, he was a con man and he seems to also have conned you. Recording an interview without fact-checking his claims or having others react to those claims isn't reporting. You presented only his side and didn't even verify claims like that he'd never let a kid die because he'd personally give them the drug free if necessary. First, why take that at face value and second, what if someone didn't know about his web site to even contact them and just saw the exorbitant prices at some retailer? I know this piece is old but geez, it's basically a puff piece even if his greed still shines through to some of us. On the other hand I just had someone who's normally very anti-big pharma, post it to say that this showed that he was just "misunderstood", as if Shkreli actually was a crusader against Big Pharma. You were conned, at least by letting his BS go unchallenged.

Shkreli seems to be all about power and weakness, that's the impression I get from this interview. I don't think his main motivation is helping people, I think its obtaining and wielding power. He likes the power he has over people. I think he bought that wu tang album because he would have something that was out of reach to everyone else, and his comments about it at the end show how he relishes that power, dangling something for people to beg for. He smirks and inflates when the interviewer says she's never heard of the chess move he mentions, and he seems to revel in her lack of chess skill, repeatedly pointing out how bad she is and oh-so-casually pointing out exactly how she is losing and how he is winning. To me he seems awkward, he constantly fidgets, contorts his body into strange positions, doesn't make eye contact for long periods of time, is visibly uncomfortable at times, even asking "is it hot in here?". I would be shocked if he was bullied when he was younger, and he basically says as much (unnecessarily) in the beginning, and it clearly affected him alot; he says he still remembers the names of the people who picked on him. I think he felt weak and worthless, and now he wants to wield as much power as possible.
@Emotionfullboy8 жыл бұрын
yeah, seemed to me the same way. He is known for his "trolling" how the internet likes to say it. He recently stated that he was about to invest in magic the gathering cards, making huge price spikes. The whole community freaked out and was so scared. In the end he just likes to feel the reactions of his actions. Knowing that he could do it and know that people would, in one way or the other, care. People are discussing the very surface of his personallity. If he is "good" or "evil". If he wants to help or just make profit. I mean beneath any action lies a deep inner motivation. Nobody just seeks to get money just to have money. Money represents power, or possibillities, or fame or whatever. Every motivation comes from a longing for acceptance or approval, just sometimes these motivations just completely turn around and become the opposite. This mostly happens when a person has been deeply hurt. Through loss, disappointment, abondenment...stuff like this
@CrazedGin8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think he likes power, because he had a major lack of it earlier in his life. But I don't think he abuses his power to take advantage of the people under his power. I think he's trying to use his power to stop the people who abuse power. You mentioned the chess game, well he is clearly an intelligent man and clearly knows it himself. I don't think it has anything to do with him holding power over her, he just has an inflated ego. What he is doing, is making a statement against the actual problem. Drug companies hold major power over the people, releasing dangerous and overpriced drugs, forcing the people to fork out loads just to survive. Even though the drugs are harmful themselves. Like he said, the companies don't care to do research on creating new, less harmful drugs. He basically did the same thing that the other companies already do, just on a grander scale to draw attention to the problem at hand. He realizes that the drug is one that doesn't affect a large number of people. I highly doubt he would have done the same for a highly used drug. He is no bully, he is the one trying to stop the bullying. And regarding his body language, yes, he is clearly socially awkward. The man probably has major anxiety and insecurity issues. His earlier life was probably rough on him and I wouldn't be surprised if he had a mental illness.

You make a good point, however it seems you, yourself have never interacted with an awkward/ socially inept person (according to societies standards). These attributes he has, that you say could be the cause of past trauma/ bullying, is just simply his own personality. To be frank, yet not rude, many highly intellectual people show body language and talk such as he does (Professors, "Nerds"). These are common attributes I have noticed growing up throughout high school and College, and asking help with homework from people like him. Everyone has their different personalities, and I completely believe what he is doing is 100% just. Big corporations kill people's wallets and people themselves. I work at a Bank, and I can see these greedy behaviors everyday; his is definitely not one of them.
@CrazedGin8 жыл бұрын
Reedan Abid I am a socially inept person. Yes, you are right that he could just naturally be that way, although most people who are socially awkward experience ridicule in their life. But no matter if he is naturally awkward or it has been caused by his past, he still struggles with some self-esteem issues. Take for example how he sits curled up. This is in an effort to make himself seem small and less likely to be noticed and judged. In comparison to someone confident who sits open and ready to be noticed. There is a good ted talks video on the subject of body language. I felt he was probably bullied in his past due to how he spoke of his past. Also, those people you spoke of that you have met that acted similar ways, also probably experienced ridicule themselves, although maybe not by you.

What he mentions at 8:40 is truly fascinating. That we blame the drug rather than a physician or hospital, because after all a drug is a drug, it’s a chemical, it is what it is. But it’s whether or not that drug can be applied to the situation you’re in, which is the job of the person prescribing it, (who is being told to overprescribe “this one drug” in favor of the finances for that company making that drug)

As much of a prick that he seems to be, he's actually highlighting a major flaw in the pharmaceutical industry, the fact that he could just go and raise the price that much shows more than just his morality. If he actually stands to his word and distributes the pill for cheap or free via his company while selling it to the 'fat cats' for $750 a pill it's just going to show the greed of larger companies who've given him a bad name. Although he'd need to set something better up than "tweet me" if he actually distributed the pill to hospitals directly for cheap it'd do a lot more good. Due to his now poster boy position as the bad guy he's in prime spot to actually send a message or get people to do their own research into the industry before just following the media coverage from the big companies point of view.

Capitalism wins because competition forces the hand of the ones who get it wrong. Is this guy a douche? Perhaps, but the main reason capitalism has a poor reputation is because the government provides ways for businesses to manipulate. Laissez Faire FTW.
